The thing is most of them chiming in probably haven't read the whole thread. Not that I can really blame them, this thing moves pretty fast on a daily basis. The thing in as we are pointing out. THEY LITERALLY SAID THEMSELVES GUYS THIS IS ALL WE HAVE WE'RE MAKING THE REST UP AS WE GO ALONG. Yet people still have an amazing amount of confidence in this project. I am sure Brad has a ton of ideas rattling around in that skull of his, but actually making them happen on a possible shoe-string budget and half a crew made up mostly of designers. People have been poking holes in this thing to see if it will float and there isn't much of substance.

Sure if you give them some time to sit down and work they might put something solid together, but why hand them cash before they do that I don't understand.

What you are talking about is still only relevant for the first 5-10% of the leveling experience. From level 1-10 in EQ, sure, people had very different experiences based on starting area. By level 20, players on Faydwer were all focused in a couple leveling zones. Same goes for both east and west antonica. By level 25 or 30, everyone was in the same 2-3 zones, and this continued all the way to cap.

You're advocating spending massive resources to increase the variability of newbie experience at the expense of development resources that could be spent on high level content, which is where the VAST majority of your playtime will be spent.

I get what you're saying, and it sounds romantic and appealing. It just isn't practical or good game design.

Ya I just mean we need something that is between POK everyone loves everyone bullshit and Stratholme where for some reason the scarlet crusade sits and fights undead for years and neither side makes an inch of headway. Both are fucking dumb. Everyone loving each other breaks my immersion but so does overt conflict that lasts for years with no conclussion.

Im like everyone else, what he wants to me, is what alot of us "niche" players want, if it works great, if it doesnt, then oh well fuck it. It saves me money on buying a new computer. lol

I think a part of their thinking is that most, if not all, of the playable races are from different planes of reality. It's quite possible that the races do not have a lot of enmity towards each other, because there simply isn't enough shared history between them. Maybe Dwarves come from a world where there are no Trolls, so their first encounters with Trolls may have been positive, fighting beside each other in this new strange reality. Enemy of my enemy, is my friend sort of thing. It may not be what I was hoping for, but anything can be explained with lore...lore trumps all our preconceived notions of how the game world should be.

It depends on their lore - which why it's dumb as fuck for any iteration of EQ lore that stays even remotely true what has been established in the franchise.

Pantheon is a new canvas, so if they can convince me of it with a great history and background lore I could accept it. That's gonna be a very hard sell though. Planar collisions that from my understanding left a patchwork of regions from different realms connected allow for both the Planescape/Sigil approach or one where the different regions are very distinct, as are the races hailing from them (nice example is the shards of alara block from MTG if you know about that, short referencehereandhere)


There is an interesting related question - are there trolls? Are there dark elves? Might be just elves or ultimately "dark elf" means something else then EQ or forgotten realms established. Huge difference between that word in forgotten realms and dragonlance for example. Are there red pandas (god I hope, throw us a bone here)? Are they going to throw a curve ball and put in an evil elf empire reminiscent of drow but call them night elves?

Several of the character artworks look like they have alot of gadgets and/or alchemy stuff... can we expect a more advanced society with steam tanks and gyrocopters and fantasy-tech like in most recent games or more classic fantasy like old EQ (not counting gnomes)?

A more reasonable person would interpret that as "we've put up all of the stuff we made for Kickstarter already," not all of the stuff they've come up with for the game and written down or created by messing around in Unity.

Paying for Alpha is a result of FTP being a bullshit monetization scheme for MMOs. It works for games like LoL because they can always introduce new OP classes and cosmetic shit and you're drawing on a huge base (55 million??). Yeah Blizzard and EA made money from the FTP aspects of WoW and SWTOR respectively but those are exceptions: WoW has a huge base and SW fans are ape for cosmetic shit.
