I don't think funding of this kickstarter equates to old school mmo desire, I think most publishers or outside investors if they have eyes on this kickstarter would think that. At the end of the day I'd rather no kickstarter had happened then the current bad kickstarter but since all we have is a bad kickstarter I'll show some support.
Do you really think publishers are following this thing? If anything the 1,700 backers and limp dicking along would have been enough for them to write it off and go back to other more viable research.

It's amazing how much social media can influence things. Sadly, I bet one tweet from Justin Beiber asking people to fund this would get the $5mil stretch goal by tonight, which is both depressing and amazing. I even commended Brad and Co. for reaching out to anyone with a large enough fan base to get the word out. It was a smart move, I mean you can't fuck up everything can you?
Maybe Bieber is a secret MMO player. Fire off a tweet to him, Brad!

My biggest concern is that it gets funded, my money is gone, and EQnext surpasses my expectations, is the new MMORPGeezus, and is too awesome to leave for Pantheon.
I figure the timeline of releases is far enough apart to make this not much of an issue unless you're so absorbed in EQN you couldn't leave for a bit. Based on Smed's comments we'll probably be playing EQN late next year while Pantheon won't hit for at least two after that.

Also, considering the past however many years of MMO releases, I'll be happy ifanyMMO comes out and is worth a damn.

I've stopped paying as much attention as before, but didn't Brad say something like the first few levels would be F2P then a sub? Then wtf is the point of having a digital copy of the game? Wouldn't everyone, essentially, be able to have a digital copy when the game comes out? That $35 tier seems like a pretty huge ripoff unless I missed something.

He did say that, but it'll likely be a sample of the game and then a "to proceed, please swipe dat credit."

Actually, I was here at the start, but when the FOH shit storm melt down happened I just didn't register right away, usually, there isn't to much to discuss here, I guess we can talk about Panda land, but I stopped playing WoW ages ago. As much as people act like I have a thing against Brad I don't really. I was disappointed with Vanguard but oh well he wasn't asking the community for support then either. If you had taken your detective work seriously and read through the posts I put, you will see I want this type of game to get funded I would love to see someone make a good old school MMO and I think it would be awesome for the community to back it, the names of the people involved aren't important. Actually having a team of professionals on it is. There are so many shills and fanboys so enamored by the idea of this that they are looking past all the fucked up shit and ignoring the fact that they were trying to mislead people. If I can help one person think twice before pissing away their money on this shit then I don't care who calls me a troll for it.
You and I are in the same camp. I'd love to see an oldschool MMO get started and succeed(even though I would be the last person to want to play it!). The thing is that the blind aren't going to be guided or change their opinion and the rest of us are well aware of the shortcomings of this Kickstarter campaign. Harping on that and Brad's past failures just sounds petty.

Yeah, that's what he was saying, basically free to play at the start but then you could sub., just more proof that they don't really know what the fuck they are doing until after the fact.

So, in other words, buying the $35 tier means you're giving $20 of charity (if the sub fee is $15).
I don't really follow, I guess. If you don't buy it, you'll have to pay the $35 or whatever the cost of the game is beyond the free trial. If you actually buy the digital copy tier you get the game plus a free 30 days.

Keep in mind that a lot of times, the Kickstarter game price doesn't reflect the actual release price, too.

4-8 million dollars from subscription revenues and 25-30 person staff seems like it could range from mildly profitable to highly profitable.
Not when you factor in the costs:
- ongoing development
- customer service [incl billing, fraud, in-game, bans etc]
- hosting
- operations
- facilities
- payment processing
- free months
- KS prepurchases
- marketing
- middleware royalties
- etc

That sub revenue is eaten fast. I plugged some rough estimates in a spreadsheet, and IMO, even @ 50K subs, it's a long, risky ROI for investors. MMOs are hard to fund and the pay to play model isn't highly regarded at the moment.

Well, Bieber and McQuaid both like fancy cars and opiates, so it's not THAT far a stretch.

I have to say, I would love to read the inside story of what happened during Brad's most recent tenure at SOE. Sounds like he was brought on to work with the EQ team, was then put in charge again of Vanguard, SOE decided to consolidate to put all of its resources into EQN, and Brad + a boatload of other people were cut (some of whom are on the development team of Pantheon.) Is that the accurate story?

The entire thing seems weird to me and reeks of the nepotism that I've heard Smed accused of several times throughout the years. That said, it does seem telling that with Brad expressing an interest in returning to SOE that Smed chose to stay the course with Ponytail, rather than hand the reigns back to Brad.
