This list is everything wrong with MMO's. Jesus christ people, just pick a good weapon that looks cool and kicks ass. The minute this thotbot shit started is when crap started going downhill. When we are whipping out our engineering calculator to determine weapon stats its time to just stop playing. The game is supposed to be fucking fun right?
Lol good luck with that. People will do this no matter what game, and it has happened and will happen in EVERY MMO. You have a choice, you min/max or you don't. Blame the curious and competitive nature of human beings.

I personally loved all of the mathematics involved with playing a warrior in EverQuest. In other games I really didn't like the warrior near as much because it's all spam a bunch of buttons instead of letting the math do the work.
Disclaimer: I should have stated this wasn't a direct attack at you. Not at all. I just hate calculating percentages when deciding what makes a good weapon. I think its bad for the genre and bad for gaming in general. Its just my opinion.

I've pledged to this kickstarter and hope the game gets made, but I want to see some fire out of these guys and so far its been more smoke.
If they agree to move to Wyoming can they count on your pledge?

I agree, though, nothing gets a team focused and a new business rolling than dealing with selling houses, moving halfway across the US, and trying to get established in a new area.

Maybe they can even hire Curt Schilling's personal real estate agent to help the transition go smoothly.

Nahh, some people enjoy that part of analyzing games and their intricate systems. Its "hey this sword kills shit faster then the other one I had", but taken further. What I don't like is shit like gearsore, which puts a numerical value on every piece of gear and then it gets translated into "Youre not good enough to roll with me" type attitude that ruins the overall game for some people. Keep ilevels off of gear.

I already pledged, although I doubt my money will ever leave my account.

These guys just aren't passionate. Moving is a red herring; they should have done that before asking for 800K to buy an office in San Diego. Seeing as this thing isn't going to get funded, yes, he would be better off in Wyoming or Texas. California is a giant pile of shit for starting new business, let alone a business that fucked up a Kickstarter in what should have been a no-brainer.

He could get some young, unmarried game devs to go work with him at cost. There are plenty of young coders and server guys that would jump at the chance of working with the man who (mostly?) designed EQ. They'd have more passion and determination, and have a clue about places like Kickstarter.

But you're right. We don't want our shoestring budget MMO to make any tough choices. Move to create a company doing something we love? Fuck that. God forbid anyone breaks a sweat and feels discomfort creating anything. I'm too stressed out now. Got to grab some in-and-out burgers and smoke a joint at the beach.

Or here, hes a long time poster.

He could go into detail on what happened with VG when he took the helm which I would imagine is what most people have a problem with.
Sillus could post here. I don't think he will, though. In my experience on Vanguard's forums he can be an arrogant asshole and even when he was flat out wrong about things or was clearly at fault he couldn't ever even bring himself to say something as cop-out as that he's just following orders from higher ups. He basically defended every decision he's ever made as if it were a game saving miracle, and every sarcastic, asshole comment he made to subscribers as if it were justified because he was Christ incarnate.

If they made a 1 mil stretch goal that was a 5 minute video of Sillius apologizing, admitting he is capable of making mistakes while being pelted with eggs, I bet two things: 1) the project would have a hugely increased chance of being funded and 2) he'd be too much of an arrogant bitch to actually do it and would just quit the project.

Prove me wrong, Sillius.

Hell, just thinking about Sillius and Vanguard makes me want to pull my pledge! How does someone let being the lead dev (of a two man team?) on Vanguard go to their head?!

They should have hired 8 interms to work for free for 2 months. I would have jumped at that opportunity. Just for the experience.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that seeing as this thing isn't going to be funded, they'd be better off in San Diego where they already live. Because the only thing worse than 10 out or work devs in San Diego, a game-developer rich area, would be those same 10 devs out of work in the middle of fucking Wyoming.

If they were moving to another state to start a startup by going to Kickstarter hoping it funded, there's no way in hell I'd give them money. And you'd be here criticizing them for wasting money moving before they even had a reason to move.

It's the chicken/egg contrarianism. Either way, people will find a reason to use their elite business, development or geniusing skills to use by telling everyone else what everyone else should and shouldn't be doing, which is always the opposite of what everyone else is doing, because being contrary on the internet is awesome.

I would back this if they fired Sillius. Hate that guy.

Posting on my Vanguard guild's forums went like this for responses:

Oh? Interesting... not much info, but it's worth the-- wait, wtf, Sillius, fuck that! /fail

Justified or not, perception or reality, it doesn't change the fact that Vanguard players ARE this games target audience, and having your target audience hate a Dev to urban legend proportions isn't good (meaning even people who don't personally hate him, know of the hate and why wouldn't they assume it's at least somewhat justified?).

He was also responsible for the itemization debacle in EQ2 Velious, no?

If Midas touch turns things to gold, Salim is the polar opposite. Salim touch = turns to complete shit.
He also made Vanguard crafting. I don't think the guy is bad at his job. And I don't even think he's actually a bad person. I just think he's like most people, and even most professionals, and especially most developers: he needs someone telling him to shut the fuck up and do the job he's been assigned to do, and not stray from clearly defined professional expectations.

Then again, he also put Slappy the Cool into Vanguard, so maybe he is just a bad person.

I would of hoped that more than 3K people wanted a more girthy MMO experience that harkened back to oldschool. I guess I was totally wrong.
The ideas presented in the KS weren't well presented. This has been horse-beaten-dead.

Other problem is many, many, many people aren't going to donate until they can see something that resembles a game. Even if it's rough, the reaction of "I could see myself playing that game" is much stronger than any current reaction not really having a game.

They could have lowered the initial funding goal. They could have first just tried to fund a demo. They could have done a lot of things, but this project was always going to be one that started slowly and only picked up significant pace proportional to the actually 'game' they were able to show being produced. That's just the reality of things. They were never going to catch fire and become a runaway success. It was always going to be a slow build that became stronger as people could actually see a game materializing.

It cracks me up people are dogging on moving to a state that promotes business, and actually stating they should stay in what is widely recognized as one of the top 5 WORST states to start a business in. Forgive me for once again bringing music into this, but its my business. I've been playing guitar for 20+ years and what did bands do in 1983 to be successful? They moved to LA. Why? Because if you wanted to succeed in the music industry, you moved to LA.
  • Kix
  • Hanoi Rocks
  • M?tley Cr?e
  • Quiet Riot
  • Poison
  • Cinderella
  • Bon Jovi

That list right there is about 500 million albums sold. What do they all have in common? They all moved to LA. (Gn'R isn't on the list because actually only Axel moved to LA. The rest of the band grew up there. Just thought I would add that in. But Axel moved from Indiana or some shit). Anyway. They all moved to LA because if they wanted to succeed, thats where it was going to happen. They lived in shit rooms, only ate when chicks brought shit over, and worked their ass off all day long stapling flyers to light posts and anywhere they could. They all lost 40 pounds, lived in roach infested apartments, and made music their life. They did what it took because they wanted it that bad. So telling me, "well so and so doesn't want to move".....ok, well I guess he doesn't want it that bad does he? Not to be a dick but if you are passionate about something you will do whatever it takes to make it work. Refusing to move, or even put yourself out one inch isn't inspiring confidence in me. Refusing to even work until you get paid is horseshit. This will never happen unless you go all in.

The fact that they live in California, and are starting the company there, is not going to prevent this from being funded or made. Don't even need an office. Basements / garages are fine.

But "creating" Pantheon is something to do until the unemployment runs out. If this doesn't work, Brad isn't going to be an out-of-work game developer. He is going to be game developer kryptonite. Might as well enjoy the clean air and low living costs of Wyoming.

Jokes aside,

Ifthey were serious, I would applaud decisions like lowering costs to put more into the actual game. One such decision that could save millions over years would be to relocate to a tech rich area like Austin, Texas. People move for work all the time. BUt it doesn't matter because that ship has already sailed.
