If the health issues are valid (whether it's him or his family), it's pretty obvious that didn't happen in the last few months, it would of been going on awhile. Which then begs the question how does someone get involved in a project like this when they've got other things going on that probably require more attention.

I might be mis-remembering or interpreting this but when I read about the whole selling off cars etc, I took it to mean he was doing this to keep his personal expenses in check and his family afloat while he worked on this start up and game.

I am not excusing Brad for taking the $45k, that was just dumb. But I have to say I agree with Silius looking like a chump. I mean, its as if he expected this to be some sort of stable job. Even if Brad hadn't taken the advance, payment would have run out with in a couple months and we would be right where we are.

I think it was a dumb move for Brad to take the money, and quite honestly I am tired of reading about him owning up to mistakes and saying hes learned when he clearly hasn't. Either that or he has really bad memory problems. And I think any of the team on this project who thought it would be a stable, long sustainable job was dumb and should have had other employment while working on this on a part time basis.

If the US had single payer we'd have EQ's spiritual successor in alpha by now.

Really, 45k or 40k is not a huge amount of money. The guy had multiple vehicles in his garage worth more than that. I have a tough time thinking this was a true boondoggle. I honestly think he believed the money spigot would turn on and his project would be flush with cash for years to come. He got involved in it simply because he thought it was going to be a huge money grab a la Vanguard.

I'm not sure what we expect of the dude. I was a harsh critic from day one as I don't see him leading a Kickstarter successfully, but that doesn't mean I think he's a thief or a con artist. He just tanked on Kickstarter and he tanked securing any funding, which was a combination of approaching this from a corporate level and also not having the capability of leading a small team.

It's really sad. This is his livelihood and he's alienated both the publisher pro side and now the KS fanbase. That's not the result of some diabolical plan.

Ha monks had +Wis on their fear chest piece, I believe. But im talking about how they would tell you things that were such blatant lies about the game. Dex only affected weapon procs, yet when you create a Monk it tells you Dex is one of the main stats you'll need.

Also Brad swearing the Fiery Avenger was totally in the game. Eventually they made a quest line for it and he swore it had already been in the game, just nobody had ever figured it out
Dex was also the primary Necro stat after Int...

Don't forget his claim that hundreds of quests were in game from launch that people just hadn't discovered for years and years while SOEs made public that it came with about 53 quests in Old World.

What we'll never know is how much would he have pocketed if the KS had been successful.

I'm sure Pantheon would be in development, I think he really wanted to make a game, but I also think he would have taken a big chunk of the money for himself.

haha I remember reading that, some number like 150 or 250 quests that were never discovered

^ I agree, I dont feel it was a diobolical plan. More or less mistakes made out of desperation given Brad is out of work, no health insurance and bills are racking up. Very dangerous situation for someone running a start up to be in. It's all very sad.

This; they weren't evil at all but saw how much the other KS'ers were pulling in and vastly underestimated the amount of work and production values required for it to succeed. I also think they were racing the clock to get money and went with what they had, which wasn't even close to enough, because otherwise the whole thing was going to fall apart.

One of the sad things about this, though, is I wonder what part places like RR had in making him think the jalopy was going to fly, based upon the calls for Brad to "save us". The emperor, upon hearing the cries, thought there was no need to put on clothes. Once he walking through the streets, though, lots of folks turned on him for being naked. Holy mixed metaphors but hopefully you can get what I mean.

The first time I "quit" EQ was that first November when it came out that most stats actually did nothing. Of course, between June and Nov I racked up 2000+ hours playing, and when Kunark came out my real life friends talked me right back into the game and I never missed a beat.

Nope, we'll never know. I wonder how design decisions down the road would of negatively affected the game as a result of Brad's management. Once the KS got started, I never thought this game was going to turn out to be what everyone wanted even if it had funded.

no one was saying whether or not brad will be able to repeat what was accomplished with EQ. the point you and the other idiots continue to try and make over and over is that EQ wasn't a good game, didn't have good mechanics, and was not worth playing and that people only played it or tolerated it because there was nothing else to play; which you could argue if you didn't play the game for several years. but if you played EQ for several years (hell, even for several months) you have no leg to stand on to call the game bad. if you played a game that you didn't like for years on end you're either:
A. a fucking idiot
B. a fucking idiot
or
C. a fucking idiot
Are you mentally retarded? Right in the fucking post of mine that you quoted I said this: "As far as etchazz's stupid posts go, no,I didn't hate EQ. I had a lot of fun playing it for a few years. But a lot of that fun was entirely in spite of McQuaid and other's efforts and vision for the game. Expecting him to repeat it, especially in light of the failure that VG turned out to be, is asinine."

So I'm going to go with you being mentally retarded, or just straight up illiterate. Because no one here is saying that EQ wasn't "a good game" or didn't have good mechanics. People are saying that it was a good game, and had good mechanics, largely in spite of the people who made it, quite possibly by accident.

This isn't a difficult nuance here.

He reminds me of Curt a little bit, except I don't think Brad has a decent throwing arm. Neither should be involved in financing or HR and neither of them seem capable of running a major business venture.
Well, the one big point in Curt's favor is that he pissed away a HUGE amount of his own money before he ever pissed away the taxpayer's. Brad isn't even willing to work for free, let alone invest his own money (of which he apparently has none). And Curt at least had the excuse that he'd never been in game development before, largely didn't know any better, and surrounded himself with yes men. Brad doesn't have that at all, after his multiple face plants, yet he keeps on trucking.

funny thing is, if his KS wasn't a total train wreck he probably would have at least gotten the initial funding he was looking for pretty easily. not saying that he would have delivered an actual game, but i could see him at least getting the $ to get the company started.
Get the company started and do what? 800k would be enough to get an office, some hardware/software, and half a dozen employees for 6 fucking months tops. Given Brad's inability to project manage, they'd likely produce next to anything worthwhile in that timeframe.

Kind of makes Salim look like a bit of a chump, too. I mean, this doesn't do anything for Brad but Salim basically said he lied about selling his Ferrari when he actually did. I also just realized that my true emotion should be why the fuck do I care about the cars or their current ownership status. What the actual fuck.
It shows what a colossal fuck up McQuaid is. The guy doesn't have a pot to piss in and has to take an advance from his crowdfunded startup to make ends meet, but owns a couple hundred thousand dollars worth of cars. Or did up until recently. Not sure what his NSX would be worth these days.

I felt that with the whole project, honestly. The radar, the infamous SLASH, horrible lore... it seemed like they were completely out of touch on who their core audience was and what they were looking for. That's never a good sign when your relying on that audience to fund your game.

Fucking Holy Partisan of Underfoot quest was supposed to have a second half too, which they said was in-game. Turns out that was a nope.jpg as well. Fucking Paladin Holy Swords. So much time spent trying to figure out how to push for the Re-Magnetized Partisan, and so many trolls posting shop'd right-clicks of it.

Fuck.It makes no difference that it was an accident or not. If they design the same way they did before, they could just as likely have more accidents instead of an over-designed, sterile piece of shit like WoW is.

What Brad did was amateur-hour bullshit, absolutely. But if I had the money, I'd put him in a creative role with a manager and tell him to make those same fucking so-called mistakes again.
