I posted this before but my wife mentioned my son's speak to a specialist and without even seeing my son she recommended help. According to my family I was a slow talker but once I started I never stopped. I told my wife I was not going to worry until he was 2. Sure enough around 26 months his language just exploded. Now at 3 and a half he never stops talking.

It's tough not to worry but I think I also think it's in the best interest of some of them to say maybe and then you have to come back.

My daughter learned the sign for "more" before anything else, I want to say she had that down before 10 months (we started with signs around 6 months). Just reinforce the fuck out of it until they get it. After "more" we worked on "please." Again, only sign we worked on until she got it, then "thank-you."

She seemed like she was behind on language/words (ahead on everything else) but once she figured those three out she was communicating pretty well just with signs and babbles and pretty soon she had many words down and now at 22 months she won't stfu. Hilarious watching her try to sign "poop" now though. I highly recommend working with signs personally. I've seen it work well not only in my own daughter, but several other kids whose parents committed to it.

Also, I know catching and working on autism early is extremely beneficial, but unless there are multiple signs I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into any diagnosis based on a single symptom (e.g. slow speech) before 2 years of age. Babies/toddlers learn shit at their own pace and tend to focus on a single skill until mastered.

We are in the same position with our guy who is almost 15 months. He hasn't said anything beyond dadada, mamama, lalala, and just gibberish "talking". No actual words at all. My wife put in a call to an early intervention program, I ain't saying a damn thing man lol, to have them come and test him and see what they think.

So my daughter, the youngest one who the Dr wants screened for autism, goes in for her blood test to rule out thyroid issues prior tot he autism screening. My wife takes her because I am working, so immediately as soon as they are in the car her older sister says "we are taking you to the doctor to get your blood taken" which, yeah. Nonstop screaming all the way to the doctor's office. My wife said they had 8 people in the room to restrain and draw this 4 year old girl's blood. She's wailing the whole time. When they stuck her she screams "YOU PUT A HOLE IN ME!" When they take her blood she screams "THAT'S MINE GIVE IT BACK! GIVE IT BACK!" over and over.

Wife took her to see Finding Dory as kind of a reward. She's still telling me today about the mean doctor who took her blood. She is so pissed. "They STOLE it daddy, it was MINE".

My dad had to put down one of his horses, and sure as shit my 5yo noticed even though she hadn't seen the group of horses for 5 months.
"Where's Sonny... the grey one with the spot on his head?"
"Well, he was really old and he passed away."
"Oh, darn. He was the nice one to ride."

Flash forward 10 hours later to our house at bed time:
"Waaaaaaaaaaaaah I miss Sonny! Why did he have to die!"

Kid you met this horse twice in your life, and this isn't even the "pony" you got.

Sorry to laugh but that's the same logic my 5yo takes. Sometimes kids just don't get it and they're four, so they live in a fantasy world.

So wish us luck. Heading down to Narragansett for an overnight vacation with the kid. Day at the beach and a trip to our fav food joints.

That bloodwork story is amazing. lol Definitely a good one for years down the road.

We still haven't done anything overnight. We aren't actively avoiding it, but we aren't actively seeking it out either.

He's kind of a light-sleeper and I have a feeling if we tried to put him down anywhere but his crib he'd freak the fuck out.

Speaking of which, his sleep-time flipouts only lasted 2 weeks thankfully. He still clings on for dear life, but I found if I just talk to him a minute like "You have to get your rest so you can play with the doggy tomorrow" and such he goes down pretty easy. It feels lame saying those things but that's his entire purpose in life so I imagine he's like "yeah dad you're right. Gotta get my rest to kiss the doggy tomorrow."

I do the same. I tell him he has to get rest so we can play and have fun in the morning. He usually at least settles down shortly after. If it works go with it.

My middle girl started out with a speech delay. We started doing speech therapy at 15 months. She was diagnosed with a developmental delay which has had her on an IEP since she was three. She just finished grade 1 and is still severely behind. She is SUPER social. Everyone in her school knows her and loves her, but academically she is really struggling and behaviorally she's tough to deal with. She gets a ton of help at school and they are wonderful, but it is really tough. I hate seeing her struggle and it breaks my heart when she calls herself stupid (that one was quickly banished from our house). She is also stubborn as all hell, so when she feels she can't do something, she won't, making it that much worse.

My daughter started speech therapy at 18 months and she is just fine, they were willing to wait until 2 years but there was a spot open and we took it.

My wife and her sisters are bad about this. I always call her out if she does it when I'm around, she's slowly getting better. Scary to think how much kids soak up from their parents without either party realizing.

I like the use of baby sign ...cannot advise reading enough...and suggest to never ask a toddler if they will or can do something...because the answer will be No...or a dangerous demonstration.

So his first out of the house overnight trip went pretty good. Fussed a bit going to bed but he slept all night in his pack and play. I think the 2 and a half hours at the beach pooped him out real good.
Tonight he was fucking hell though. An hour of on and off screaming for no apparent reason other than fuck you I don't want to go to bed even though he was very clearly tired.

Kids can get overly tired and then it's the exact fucking nightmare you described.

With my kids there's definitely a window and if you miss it there's hell to pay. Sticking to a schedule, developing a routine, and being consistent has all but completely removed bed time drama (I have a 2 and 4 year old).

I gotta say, your little girl sounds like a smart one.

She's like 6 isn't she? Assertive little girl. Just tell her they didn't steal it, you gave it to them. Get her thinking along those lines.
