yeah, the others have said it, but I will try to clarify one more.
Most gems are now quest rewards.
Only, portal, added Chaos, detonate mines, empower, enhance and enlighten are drop only.
List of drop-only gems - Official Path of Exile Wiki

Mirror arrow is drop or vendor recipe only, oddly. (block chance reduc is vendor only as well. a pvp recipe.)

Quest Rewards - Official Path of Exile Wiki
Skill gems via quests is class based, and a bit complicated.
Refer to chart.. Also googling individual skill, will say. Example:
Ball Lightning - Official Path of Exile Wiki

Another factor to consider, quest rewards for many, is often well behind, level req of any given gem.
Greater Multiple Projectiles Support - Official Path of Exile Wiki
Quest reward for act 4, killing malachai. level 40 zone, (level40-45 suggested.) GMP has a level 38 requirement. Which is act 3 library/tower.
So definitely better to trade for sooner then, wait for quest reward. since you probably will want it for malachai, and/or izaro.

You can get it for Malachai, the quest ends right before you do the fight, when you open the thingie. You can TP out, get your gems, and go back in. You can get them earlier by trading but never bothered, unless obviously you don't get the gem as rewards then might as well.

On new leagues early on it's very easy to get gems from other classes. Later on, it's actually annoying since a lot of people won't bother stopping what they're doing to sell you a 5alt gem and shit, plus a lot of people don't even bother listing them anymore. At that point you're better off paying like an alch or a chaos for a quality version of the gem, it's actually easier to get than a normal one.

Well just use LMP until you get GMP ... It would probably take me longer to trade for it than just to bulldoze through Malachai

A few new base items released. pretty crazy powerful.
Due note they are all "map only" and in fact, "specific map only". all 74+
Implicit on helm/boots/gloves do of course compete with corruptions and lab enchants.

This isnt right, the gems are a reward for killing Daresso and Kaom. You have to return to Piety in the Cave, talk to her twice then youll get them next time you go back to town.

hrm. yeah, it seems the quest gives its rewards at different points.

normal-gems are given on killing Kaom/Daresso and using the Rapture device.
Merc-map is after killing Malachai still I think.

I might run RF again, because that amulet is pretty sexy, however spamming it on totems was terribly boring, even if very effective. I wonder if CoC stays in though, because so far nothing makes me think it will be dethroned anytime soon, unless they go crazy with some cursed no-crit map mods or reflects

I beat normal last night. Didnt have a problem with a boss until the last guy. His "jazz hands" of death attack killed me before my blink arrow animation could finish. Probably died 10-15 times that fight. Also steam rolling through act 1 of cruel. My 4 link Tornado shot is doing work. I am really lost on how to gear from here on. Ive really on been prioritizing getting 4 links to the detriment of other stats. Ive been saving every piece of 4 link that drops no matter what it is. Not sure when to start dropping currency on equipment. My resists are shit so i know i need to build them up. Crossing my fingers for a 5 link drop sometime.

hahaha.. 5l drop. hhaa. good luck.

(a 5l drop is statistically, unlikely/rare. not insane rare, but enough to not count on. A 5l on an item BASE you WANT, is downright very unlikely. A 5l on a base you want, then rolled with the right mods you want either by drop, or by alch/chaos... )
its definitely easier to collect currency, and trade for one.

In the same sense, it should also be noted, "crafted" is almost always more expensive then simply trading for the item you want.

Buy a 5L with a dex base of some kind, then use chromatics until you get your colors. Getting a 5L or 6L with fusings is uncommon enough that youll spend more in fusings than buying a 5L from another player would cost. Only time youll ever spam fusings on something is trying to get a 6L in a base you want, probably a unique armor.

yeah, getting colors you want, is actually usually pretty easy. Chromatics are cheap. esp if you are using an item filter, to highly chrom recipe drops. (3 linked of each color.)
Forum - Gameplay Help and Discussion - [Loot Filter] One Filter to Rule Them All v2.3.7 (Updated 2016-07-20) - Path of Exile
"one filter" item filter.

Colors on an item, are weighed by the base items requirements. A bow, which is a DEX item, will favor green slots heavily. A DEX armor aka evasion, green. A DEX/STR armor, aka eva/armor, green and red. A str armor-red. An int/energy shield armor-blue.
Getting ON color then is easy. Getting OFF Colors, which some builds use heavily, is a real pain in the butt, and expensive.
example, Lioneye's Vision, a STR armor chest, built for projectiles. Projectile skills mostly being green.
Lioneye's Vision - Official Path of Exile Wiki

Fusings however are not cheap. Trying to 5 or 6l an item yourself will be very hard to do honestly.

Standard bow build tends to have it easy for getting socket colors right.
bow and chests are likely pure dex or dex/str, with eva, or eva/arm.
you will likely want ar, or ev/ar boots for the End cry, immortal call+cwdt+duration. a 4 red. (end cry doesnt need to be linked.

Played a bit of the 48 hour league. Really shows how bad the past few leagues have been when compared to the beyond/invasion/etc mechanics. They are just so much more fun to deal with.

Haven't played this game in about 2 years, decided I want to fire it up again. My last character was a 61 ground slam marauder; all of my passives have been reset and I can't wear any of my gear. Worth it to try to spec him out again or should I start again? Gear is pretty much terrible

60 isn't that high. I'd start again to get a feel for all the changes and get re geared. It's a much more enjoyable experience with all the added content and QoL changes

I think that's the way I'm leaning, what's 1 of the more fun builds these days? Just looking for something entertaining doesn't need to be the best

If you liked Ground Slam, Earthquake is the new shiny toy. Try it as a Duelist with the Slayer ascendancy.

A lot of people hated these leagues back then though, especially Beyond(hell people hated Beyond days during that 1month league that had rotating mods). Beyond is nice once in a while, but permanently beyond is a fucking shitfest, it gets annoying really quickly unless you play a very strong build. I mean it's not as bad as it used to due to the powercreep either, like quite often shit dies instantly as it spawns from aoe you cast before it even spawned, while back then it was more annoying but still. And Invasion was a mess in terms of balancing, with many of the mobs just one shotting you.

On the other hand, I do agree that some of the recent leagues have been shit. Tempest was meh, other than easy corrupted shit and was straight up too annoying to bother at times. Talisman was bad other than adding a unique fight. Perandus was kinda bad, it was nice to play cause easy uniques and all that, but the actual perandus caches were annoying as shit for some builds, lagged a lot due to terrible particles and were just not very interesting as a mechanic. Prophecy was pretty good, at least until you reached maps and half the prophecies were annoying to do because you had to go in a zone giving no xp to find a non guaranteed thing, or seal it and waste a bunch of coins because you didn't RNG good. But the concept was nice enough and the unique upgrading system is great stuff to make older shitty uniques less shitty(or even good in some cases).

Honestly the entire thing has some goods and a lot of bads I'd say. Some of the leagues do better when reused as temporary or toned down content, or integrated at a lesser rate in current content(like nemesis/bloodlines).

Next league looks pretty meh too. Only redeeming feature I think is the fact some of the mods you get from the essences don't exist otherwise, such as minion speed% as a stat, but it otherwise seems like it'll be boring as shit if you don't self found, since it'll probably be a lot better to just sell essences to the few people who like crafting shit, then buy rares already rolled with the currency, than actually try to roll shit yourself. Now if you're like me and don't care too much about trading, it sounds pretty fun, being able to target crafts a bit better without sinking too much currency, but for a lot of people it looks like it'll be a "non league", a league which you ignore the mechanics of(kinda like prophecy by a lot of people once they reached 80+).
