I can't think of much in the past few years that has had high markups for resale. People who tried that with WiiU got burned really badly as supply vastly exceeded demand. Same with Vita, 3DS, etc. I have serious doubts PS4 will do well for resale, especially since the components are pretty stock and Sony is going to be pumping it out non stop from now until launch. XBOne may be different due to component issues (esram yields) but that has to be balanced out with what the real demand is going to be.

With how easy it is to order off amazon I also suspect a massive number are just holds in case demand is high, especially since it requires $0 down and won't charge until the system ships.

Well the PS4 "Launch Edition" and Xbox One "Day One Edition" are both sold out on Amazon.

Not sure there is anything different about the PS4 other than just them guaranteeing it on your doorstep on launch day.

Nope. There is a note on the Amazon page explaining that the launch PS4 is only available on launch day, but no different than the other one you can still preorder.

Weird thing about that. I didn't have an option to select launch edition when I preordered my ps4 and I preordered only minutes after the 399 announcement.

Yup, same here. We got the launch edition. Once they sold 'too many', they opened up that second option.

You sure about that? My order isn't listing that SKU.

Also Amazon side note if I let Prime expire does it still count for POs while it eammwas active? Debating about keeping it or not and got $25 of shipping in POs counting PS4 stuff right now.

On Amazon, it will say on the top of the page "You ordered this item on XXX date. Click to instantly reorder, etc". On the "standard edition" this is not there, when I click on the "launch edition" it lists my order date up top.

Define within "minutes"? I probably ordered literally within the first minute Amazon listed a price. That said, even like 30 minutes later, there still was only one version available to order. Maybe they moved some of the later orders to the 'standard' edition when they sold more than they were allotted.

Yeah unfortunately I can't tell you when exactly I ordered mine, they don't have that information on the invoice but I didn't order within minutes I ordered hours later and got a launch one.

Do you have prime? Maybe that is the key?

I didn't have Prime when I started the order only had it on revision once I noticed the trial offered when I was getting AC4 for it the next morning.

Mine was maybe 5-10 min post announce though. If even that.

Then in the middle of the screen there are two javascript buttons, Standard and launch edition. Toggle between the two, the top of the amazon page (under search) will flip to say something like "Instant Order Update..." for only one of the two.

There is no other way to know right now, they are both the same SKU/box its just that the launch edition is one they expect to ship out on launch day, based on how many Sony has said they will get day 0 (ie Sony told them to expect 100k so the first 100k are launch editions, rest are standard). That number could go higher or lower as the weeks progress, and people are certainly going to cancel pre-orders as the date gets closer. Heck, we don't even have a date yet.

Everyone who ordered in the first 12 hours or so has the launch version, don't know the exact cutoff time but I know it was at least 8 hours since I checked before going to bed. One thing that will be a problem is credit card auths will fail etc when the ship date hits, so make sure your CC info is accurate a week or so before it ships.

Interesting - seen anyone with an order that late set as a launch one? Or insider info? Or just speculation?

Another puzzle piece I can add is my confirmation came back at 11:10pm EST.

I am betting since it's not an actual edition that if you didn't have Prime when you purchased it or didn't select overnight shipping or something then you won't have a "Launch Edition".
