My tale is as follows.
I woke up at around 9pm last night with the intention of heading to my usual Lapras hunting grounds in Odaiba early in the morning rather than from the afternoon until last train like I usually do. I was hoping the shake up to the schedule might flush out the elusive Lapras that had evaded me on my previous four trips.
I load up with a spare Galaxy S5 battery, and my portable external battery, enough juice to last me 10 hours at least, and hit the trains, making my way to my usual camping spot by 9:30am. Now it's summer in Japan so I'm wearing board shorts and a thin cotton polo shirt. Weather report says fine but humid. The first few hours are fairly quiet. I pick up a few Eggescute, level up to 29, power up my mons. A few rares spawn around me, dewgong, hitmonlee, jynx. I ignore them. I just sit on the lure zone and keep tossing balls at the dime a dozen pokemon that keep spawning.
It's starting to drizzle now. My seat is under a tree that keeps me dry, but everyone around me is popping umbrellas and the wind picks up. I'm starting to get cold, really cold. I've been up for about 16 hours at this point, and I'm starting to get pessimistic. It looks like my fourth trip to Odaiba will be the worst so far, since there wasn't even any other pokemon I needed, just this fucking Lapras who never spawns except when I'm not here.
Ii starts to rain more heavily. The leaves of the tree are starting to drip water down now. My Galaxy S5 is waterproof, but unfortunately I left the house without the plug that covers the charging port and water could potentially be an issue. I'm also falling asleep at this point. Im tired, cranky, hungry, and I relocate under shelter nearby with the other pokemon go players, huddling for warmth. I check the vending machines for a hot coffee - nothing. Settle for a cold espresso and pound it down to keep myself awake.
I told myself I would go and get some ramen and then go home once my last battery is down to 50%. My external battery is drained, my first regular battery is at 5%, and all of a sudden I see people running. Quickly checking the map I see it's just a Porygon. Another 10 minutes watching the rain come down over the ocean and I'm over it. I'm going home. The wind is freezing me to the bone.
My battery goes dead and I stop to slide in my fresh one. Again I see people running. Really running this time. People are sprinting north in the pounding rain, slipping, sliding, falling over. Everyone around me is shouting, but I don't hear any pokemon names that I recognize. I start to get excited. Could this be it? I hear someone shout "RAPRASU" and my heart starts to beat faster. I begin to worry. The people running for it are really booking it. I've seen Lapras spawn before but always on lures, so that's just 3 minutes to get there. It's raining and I'm not willing to run and risk hurting myself. Maybe it's too far away to get?
Finally my phone powers back on and I see it. There's a Lapras 800m away, 13 minute despawn. I can get it. I can get it! My phones at 100% charge (which makes it look like I was spoofing, but fuck it) so I don't have to worry about it dying, but it's pissing down rain and I'm worried my phone is going to short out. I join the massive crowd of people making their way to the spawn. Hundreds, thousands of people converging in one place. There's some kind of festival going on and the people there watch in amazement, filming as the horde of people run, skid, walk their way by on the way to the prize. Finally I see it on the map. You will be mine.
I'm torn. I've been thinking. If it's a strong one, that would be great for me, but maybe I won't be able to catch it. If it's weak, it's useless for fighting, but easy to catch, and my Dex gets complete. Which do I want? I settle on a weak one. I just want to be /done/ with this cursed Lapras hunt.
Fuck. That is not a weak Lapras. FUCK! I mean sweet it's a powerful Lapras but if I can't catch it....
The rain is pouring down. I switch to ultraballs, use a berry, and try to throw a pokeball. It goes nowhere. The rain on the screen is interfering with the touch sensor and I can't throw a pokeball. Fuck! I pull a cloth out of my pocket and try to wipe it off. Try throwing a ball, it goes barely far enough to catch a pidgey and this fucking Lapras is at long range. I wipe the screen again and hunch myself over far as I can and start tossing balls it. Ultra balls go everywhere but none hit the Lapras... until one does. It pops back out immediately. FUCK!
I use another berry and keep tossing balls. The crowd is jostling me every which way. I sneak my phone under someones umbrella and continue to try to throw the ball far enough. It either goes nowhere or doesn't go far enough. I'm not worried about time but my heart is racing. Finally I get a long range ball off. It hits. One rock. Two Rocks. Three rocks. YES!.
Now to see the spoils. It's pretty powerful. Even if it's low IV, it will be useful as long as it has the right moveset...
Perfect moveset! Fuck yeah!
I celebrate by getting delicious Saporo Miso ramen in the nearby Ramen theme park. because I'm cold and fat.
it's not until I get home that I think to check the IV's..
That'll do pig. That'll do.
