I wanted to circle back on this one to say I was wrong. Some friends of mine convinced me to give this a second look, which I did, and I have had a blast. I have been delighted several times by what we have encountered along the way through this story and game loop is pretty good. Here are some details:

Good:
- Good graphics
- Stable
- Fairly deep crafting system
- Lots of quality of life. E.g. if anything is on a pallet or in a box in your base and you are also in your base and attempt to craft something, it will pull from your inventory. Any time you tear something down, you get all mats back. You can create map stones for fast travel to wherever you want.
- Fun progression through the story.
- Lots of cool touches.

Needs improvement:
- Day/night cycles too fast
- Buffs too short
- Combat a little janky sometimes

I think if you are a LotR fan, this is a no-brainer purchase. If you're meh on LotR but like the genre, I wouldn't say that pushes the genre but it's good enough to purchase on sale.

Ok so the 1st time no beer. The second time how many beers? 6-7?

It's nice that the devs are smart enough to implement genre standard QoL improvements early on instead of having to be pestered for them, but that doesn't change the fact that its a 20 dollar game with a 20 dollar IP charge tacked on. Also the EGS taint never washes off.

Necro! So I had forgotten this came out, but husband caught it on sale so we've been trying it out. Just doing story difficulty through the campaign mode. I'm really enjoying it for the most part. Haven't played these survival games before, but jesus, I could spend the entire day just going around cleaning up Moria, lol. It's oddly satisfying. Combat's a bit jank, there's some issues we've run into with pacing of upgrades, but overall it's been fun, the environments are great and the building is fun. Don't have another survival game to compare to, but so far it's been worth it to us.

Nice. I also saw it pop up when it went on sale a bit ago too and was wondering if they cleaned it up since launch. It sounded like there were some issues on release, but couldn't find any recent reviews on it to see if or how much changed.

There's definitely some jank, though I don't know how it compares to original release. See mobs stuck in walls a lot, sometimes when I port I just fly off into the ether, loading times when trying to pass between larger areas sometimes really suck (the mist at room transitions), etc.

There is some definite jank, but I still think it's a fun playthrough with friends at $19 or whatever it is. At a higher price point or if you're a loser without friends, it's probably not worth it.

Been having a lot of fun, even with the janky combat. Could see this being fun with friends. DM me if you want to have a game night.

I played it at release and got through a lot of the story. I personally thought it was pretty good. There was some stuff that needed to be rebalanced but, overall, an interesting game. I was surprised that it didn't blow up, given it is in the Tolkien universe and does and faithfully captures the feeling of being in that part of it, but maybe modern kids don't know Tolkien.

Hopefully they have fixed some of the jank in the past year. I have been trying to get some of my gaming buddies to jump into it.

Finished the campaign the other night. Feels like it ended a little abruptly. There's also a thing you pick up during your run that you saw a hole for previously, but then they don't let you go back and stick it in, which was annoying. Would have been cool to at least see what happens if you did?

I threw up a sandbox mode with my character just to see how it's different and also just going to go through and play Moria clean-up crew on it when I need to de-stress.

5gb update. This has become my goto when I just want to chill. It's a nice change from the second job every MMO seems to have become. I hate logging into a game and immediately needing to do 1-2 hours worth of daily tasks, events, and mini games, just to feel like I am not screwing myself over.

Started a fresh character, re doing the story, and watching my piles of stuff grow. It's damn satisfying.

Played this the other night for 4 hours w a friend and then 2 more on my own after he got off.

Definitely interesting. Progression feels a bit awkward but being able to repair a run down dwarf/elf house and make it your own has been fun!

The last two hours solo were just me tearing stuff down and building around it. Pretty neat. I just don’t like how much weaker the walls I build are compared to the buildings you can repair.

Was this your first four hours in the game? Did you guys move on from your first base?

I wish this game had been more popular. There is something very enjoyable about it. Still planning to play it when I can get some people to be into it. Hopefully some of the jankiness has been fixed since release.

Yeah we played a couple of nights. Need to hop back in now that I’ve discovered the mines of Moria.

Built our second base in the elf area.

Just finished up my first complete playthrough of this. Overall, pretty solid, and just needed a little more work, particularly on resources and progression, to be something really special. They put a lot of energy into building assets but the building system becomes clunky beyond the basics and isn't really a building game anyway; you're basically reclaiming existing facilities. Some of that energy would have been well spent tuning progression, and resources, balancing buffs, armor, weapon, etc., imo.

Overall, compelling story, they did a nice job of bringing it to life. I would play the expansion.

This keeps showing up in my list also. i tend to not enjoy the true building games ala Minecraft, so I’ve somewhat avoided this.
