The amount of actual building you do is pretty minimal. Mainly you go into a decrepit building, clean up the rubble, rebuild a few walls and start placing your stations (fire, workbench, forge, etc). We basically had three bases: 1) There is a newb base you get at the beginning. Just rebuild some walls. You stay there until early game. 2) Second base we built in another similar existing building, a little bigger. Put a new wall on it. We ended up expanding it a little. 3) Final base was in a huge open facility. Added some flooring and added a door. It lasted us from late mid to end of game.

There are some other minor things you will do like adding lights, organizing your chests and stations for optimal use etc.

I think it is on sale for $16 on Steam right now. Easy purchase but better played with a friend or more.
