I remember reading somewhere that she said she fell off the wagon 4 or 5 times in 23 years, not bad going for self medicating to deal with an illness that wasn't really known or understood. Her talent wasn't in acting, it was in fixing scripts (worked on the prequels, lethal weapon 3, hook, sister act to name a few).
