I don't know what your smoking, but AC being purely 5Ghz means its range and penetration are worse then 2.4ghz N or G. As for its throughput, that's because of its capability of using more antennae in tandem, MIMO.

In a situation with a single directional antenna neither AC or N will do much better then G. G is still king for long distance wifi tunnels.

Ok i have an issue with my router...

i forgot the damn password and...the bloody thing will not reset to factory defaults so i can reset it.

i have a netgear nighthawk x6 (8000)

i've tried the normal press and hold the reset button down for ~10 sec, the hold reset down- count to 30, pull plug- count to 30, plug in count to 30 and release reset and several other variations, so far nothing has worked.

any ideas?

the weird thing is the password, i use the same several passwords for pretty much everything, and none have worked.
of course as i type this i remembered one password i have used once that i have not tried- will go home and try it tonite or tomorrow.

You sure about that? G is limited to 54Mbps while N is 150Mbps per antenna.

thanks hoping someone had a different answer, admin/password doesn't work & the network settings for wireless are remaining what i named them(name, name2, name-5g, name-5g2) --ie its not resetting. think what i will do tomorrow morning is unplug everything for an hr, then just plug the router in (power) turn wifi off (ie press the button to turn wifi off) then try the reset with nothing actually connected to the router.

Have you tried powering off. Holding the reset button while plugging power back in (continue holding reset button while powering on and for about 10-15 seconds afterwards).

I didn't look it up but I swear that is how ASUS routers get reset.

Everything related to speed and range is "theoretical" with 802.11 standards, being wireless there is no guarantee for any of it. In practice I've found N to be less forgiving for barriers or interference, AC is even more so limited by the environment. Things as simple as house additions leading to internal walls that were formally external walls, lead paint, leaves on trees, etc. All of this has an impact. N and AC make up for it by teaming up multiple antennas to work together, but that is moot in a situation with a single antenna.

Google 30-30-30 but I will hopefully list it properly.

Hold reset for 30 while plugged in.
Still hold reset for another 30 while unplugged.
Plug it back in while holding reset for 30 and then let go.

Works for me every time on every router to go back to factory.

done the press and hold for 30, while still pressed, unplug, hold for 30, while still pressed plug back in, hold for 30 and release- same result
do the unplug, then press and hold and plug in for 30- same result.

Well I picked up the RT-AC88U and this router is awesome. I had some problems I guess with my old router and this fixed my internet.

I have 32 802.11ac standard wifi devices working right now. The range is actually quite good. It may be the brand but the internal antenna penetrate better than any other devices I have used *cisco*. I have a few that are using a directional 5ghz antenna from mesh points and to the mesh portals. But since we have rate limited to only use a 50mbps pipe i can't really attest to the speeds of the devices themselves, but the reliability is great. It's not really feasible for a home setup but I would absolutely recommend an Aruba system if you want a mesh that you can really control. Opposed to goddamn meraki.

Yeah, I've used the Aruba 220 series and they were awesome especially for the price. Config was easy to manage and the controller wasn't the usual hard to use, buggy piece of shit.

Was going to pick up an Amplifi b/c the wife thinks it is cute and I'm having some coverage problems around the house and it is driving me crazy. Anyways, fuck their shipping costs.

Just got our AmpliFi in and set up. Gotta say it is pretty slick and idiot proof. No initial advanced settings or anything, load up the app, make a password, and it is up and running. I used our old SSID / pw and every device connected immediately, the APs took another 2min to set up. Signal has been fine, waiting to see until tonight when I stream video from the AP in the bedroom. We have the router in the living room and 1 AP in the downstairs bedroom and the 2nd AP in the upstairs. Both on 4 bars or strength to the base.

Oh and the wife likes that from her iPhone she can make the lights go up and down on it, and that it makes noises during setup like a video game.

How are the antenna connected? Via copper?

The remote guys? Mesh from the base. They plug in to the wall and have a magnetic antenna connected to them, which is actually really cool to play with. So like if you have a huge dog or knock it with a vacuum it just snaps at the magnet and nothing actually breaks. But the connection is wireless to the router. It forms a mesh network so you can go like .. . .

Remote < = > Router < => Remote

or

Router < = > Remote < = > Remote

etc...

As long as they can see each other they communicate and form a transparent network that your devices roam through.

There's nothing advanced here. You aren't going to DD-WRT it or custom firmware, this is like the evolution of plug-n-play give me some wireless in my house. But I'm like 6 hours in. Give me some time and I'll find something to bitch about.
