Is it good, I've been eyeballing it and Divinity all day.
The combat and battles are great and the best part of the game. The rest of the game...dialogue, cities, story, etc are only meh. Overall I'd give it a 7/10, maybe 8...the fights (Which is 80+% of the game) are just a lot of fun IMO. The interaction with objects changes up the fights quite a bit. I haven't put a ton of hours in to it yet, but I'd say it's well worth $25-$35 range. If it was released 5 years ago, I'd say it's worth more, but games are just so much cheaper nowadays.

I really wish there were more job-based tactics games out there. Like, any, besides FFT. Blackguard looks like it might be fun at least.
Tactics Ogre if you haven't tried it, and are in to playing retro games at all. It was just as good if not better than FFT and released in the same video game era.

Try playing Disgaea withverystrictly imposed gear limits. Instead of one-shotting everything it will make it a much more tactical like you are looking for.

I wish Disgaea had different modes like that. Different rulesets for that game could make it go from pretty good to great.

Please don't. Perhaps if people stopped buying these weak ass handhelds we'd get good games back on consoles.
Meh, most of the good 3DS games come right from Nintendo or Square and Atlus. And don't hate on the 3DS until you've tried it, it's a great system. We still get plenty of awesome games on consoles too.

It's handhelds I have a problem with. I'm sure the 3DS and Vita are both great systems, but some of us just don't want handhelds anymore. We don't really get the games on consoles that are on handhelds anymore though. There were a ton of DS games that I would have loved to play on consoles...tactics games, RPG's, etc. Now I just get mad when I see games like Bravely Default, Fire Emblem, etc. I really want to play them, I just don't want to buy another damn handheld.

I used to think the exact same thing until I actually got my hands on my 3DS. TheEXACTsame thing. Yeah, it sucks that some of those games aren't on consoles anymore, but we can still play them and they are still good experiences on the 3DS.

There's also still a ton of console RPGs like that, they're not all gone. NISA/Gust still make a lot, Square still makes some, and Atlus has some coming as well. The next couple months have quite a few.

02/07: Bravely Default (3DS)
02/11: Lightning Returns (PS3)
02/18: Ragnarok Odyssey ACE (PS3)
02/25: Tales of Symphonia Chronicles HD (PS3)

03/04: South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS3)
03/11: Dark Souls 2 (PS3) $65
03/11: Atelier Escha & Logy (PS3)
03/18: Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD (PS3)
03/25: The Witch and the Hundred Knight (PS3)

That's 8 RPGs for the PS3 coming in February and March. 8! Surely there has to be something there you'd enjoy. My only disappointment here is that they're on the PS3 and not the PS4.

Sadly they're not close to emulating them either which sucks, otherwise could just play that. I said that in one of the vita discussions but I really wish sony/nintendo would just have it so you can download and play the handheld games on their normal consoles too, so you could like play all the vita games on PS4 and all the 3DS games on wii U. Granted I don't have either consoles but I'd probably buy them instead of the handhelds since that would also give access to the games on these. Probably will end up buying a 3DS at some point, just feels like quite a waste of money at the moment though, there's a handful of games I want to play but if you factor the price of the console it makes them expensive as fuck.

Well, good news with the Vita at least - we'll be able to play the Vita RPGs on our TVs once the VitaTV comes out.

People who are really against handhelds should definitely get that when Sony releases it over here.

Writing that wasn't so terrible and painfully unfunny would go a long way too. I really like the concepts and combat of Disgaea, but the only way I've ever gotten more than a couple hours into any of the games was by skipping every bit of dialog as fast as I possibly can.

My problem with handhelds is that, unlike real consoles, practically EVERY FUCKING GAME is an exclusive. If you could at least count on the vast majority of third party titles to be cross-platform, I'd suck it up and just go buy one. I can only assume that this doesn't happen because Nintendo continually jams every retarded gimmick they can come up with into their hardware.

So yeah, I'll buy a VitaTV for sure once it comes to the US, just so I can play the games I've collected on PS+ along with a few others (sadly, this still means mostly PSP titles rather than Vita ones). At least a few PS+ games are incompatible with the Vita TV though, which is disappointing. Soul Sacrifice works though, and that's the only one that would be a deal-breaker if it didn't.

Nintendo will never see a penny from me though.

Are any of the above (or any coming out this year) true RPG's a la BG, PS:T, Wizardry, Fallout, Ultima, etc? Or are they all just glorified 1st person shooters with "RPG elements", and JRPG's with stupid dialogue and all the grittiness of a My Little Pony episode? I've got Project: Eternity, Legend of Grimlock 2, and Might and Magic on my radar, but don't recognize anything else..

No, but to be fair we were discussing good console RPGs moving to handhelds. Most of what you listed started on PC and there are still plenty of good PC RPG's being released.

Kind of a different discussion.

Edit: To your point though, this is the reason I haven't bought any new consoles or handhelds since the Ps3, and Nintendo DS. PC is basically all I ever play anymore, and plan on playing in the foreseeable future.

Yeah, didn't mean to derail; he had listed all those RPG's for the PS3, and since I recognize him as the local gaming encyclopedia it was quicker to ask if any of those (plus all the ones in the OP) were old school style RPG's rather than research them all myself..

Most could fall into the category of very bright and colorful with children/teen protagonists (which I assume is implied in the My little pony remark), but Dark Souls 2 is certainly not. I am looking forwards to that game greatly. That and South Park are the only ones on that list I will get at once.

Well this is the list of the next 2 months, first post has the 2014 list and there's a few of those kickstarter stuff that goes old school RPG. I think most important one being Pillars of Eternity. There's also Grimrock 2 which is old school-like and Wasteland 2. Bunch of them really, just not in the next couple months and more later this year. Next 2 months is jrpg stuff, and Dark souls 2 which is in its own category of awesome.

Yeah, really looking forward to Grimrock 2 and Wasteland. I couldn't get into Dark Souls-- I just don't have the gaming constitution that I had when I was 20. It's like how I used to love the mega man series as a kid, then loaded it up on my PS3 a year ago and was like "wtf, this shit is impossible, how the hell did I beat this when I was 18"?

TheTales of Symphonia Chronicles HDremaster will be really good. Great combat and a good story. It's definitelynotkiddy, despite being colorful.

South Park the Stick of Truthis a turn-based & party based RPG that looks and sounds hilarious as fuck.

The Witch and the Hundred Knightis a Hack & Slash RPG by NIS (Disgaea devs) and will assuredly have all the crude humor that they love to do.

Atelier Escha & Logywill be awesome to me, but probably toolight and fluffyfor you.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIIIandFinal Fantasy X/X-2 HDdon't really need an explanation.

You suck if you don't buyDark Souls 2.

Ragnarok Odyssey ACEis kinda Monster Hunter-ish, I think.
