Even though I signed up for Google Fiber almost a year ago and still don't have it (DAMNIT GOOGLE), they're at least scaring the shit out of Time Warner. I've had their $70 package for like 10 years. It was 25/5 for the longest time, then when Google announced they were coming to KC like 4 years ago, TW bumped it to 50/5 for the same price. Then a year or so later they bumped it to 100/5 for the same price, then when Google announced last year that they were coming to my specific suburb, TW bumped me again to 300/5 for the same price.

The 5mbps download is still ridiculous, but the 300mbps download is nice. I still never get 300 during prime evening hours though, it bogs down to more like 100-150ish

I'm still going to drop them immediately the day the Google Fiber line is connected to my house though. $75 for 1000/1000
5 download and 300 download... sureeeeee bro we know what you meant. 5 upload...

It's been so, so slow to roll out and Kansas City was the first city that Google announced. March 30 of 2011 was the original announcement, lines started being laid in 2012 and home installs began in 2013. Now its 2016 and I would have to guess that probably 40-50% of the metro area has it available to them at this point(that should be pushing 60% by the end of 2016. It's a slow, slow process. I wouldn't be surprised if it's 2020 before Google is done laying line around the city. It's going to end up being a 7-10 year process by the time it's all said and done.

It isn't so much Google bringing their services in, it's the threat of competition to unfuck other companies

Yep. we just need competition. TWC recently announced an increase to rates here. $59/mo for 15/1, woo. Modem rental is supposedly going up as well, last I knew it was $8/mo.

I'm trying out "cutting the cord" on my office TV. I'll see how well I can manage my usual shows without using a cable box in there - because quite frankly fuck renting another box from Comcast.

You kids and your slow internet for expensive prices. Move to Minneapolis.

If you live north of 62 sure. Maybe they'll start moving south sometime in 2017.

Sling box and a Chromecast. Connect sling box to cable boss in bedroom or living room send to any Tv with a chromecast or phone or tablet.

Move to Traffic Fest Hipsterville 2016. Problem solved!
Fixed.

Their coverage is shit right now, and has been for a long time. Hopefully they keep expanding. They don't even cover 10 square miles right now between what they have live/planned: Only the areas in green are actually live right now.

The prices of the competitor's is wrong too. I've got 150 down with Comcast right now but it is packaged with 200+ Channels and I'm only paying $100. You can get the internet service only for $60/m - it is still more than US Internets and I'm not saying go with Comcast by any stretch, but they say it is $200 on their site. Yes, the $60 is a promo price but a quick call allows you to extent it so whatever.

I've actually been pretty happy with Comcast at my place, granted I'm in the southern 'burbs but I think I've only had one outtage in the past 2-3 years. The upload speed is horseshit, I guess that is the downside to them.

Having said that, I'd switch to US Internet in a heartbeat if it was available at our house.

If you have Comcast and just want 100mb internet, it's $100. I know that all to well after many an arguments with them.

And there are parts of uptown that aren't too bad. Parking sucks though for sure.

and they are a small company, don't be salty, at least SOMEONE is trying and hell, their coverage is better than Century Links 1GB coverage and Century Link is a million times large of a company than they are.

That sucks, Comcast around here has 150mbps internet for $60 per month(first 12 month introductory price, not sure what it raises to after that)

I know when I had Century Link they had no caps either . I'd switch back in a heartbeat if it was available here.

Well, it took 3 calls to Comcast today to get my service transferred. Part of the problem was that it wasn't a transfer, but a cancel and new service because I'm moving states. But in the end I'm getting 150 down internet and 240 channels for $109 / month.

Century Link coverage map for their gigabit stuff someone threw together from dslreports:
cl_gig_coords_fixed_12-29-2015

Assumes that people volunteering their addresses have gigabit are telling the truth, but it does seem like US Internet is lighting a fire under the ass of CL to up their coverage. $150 vs. $65 a month will be impossible for them to compete with though if USI ever catches up in coverage so the next few years will be interesting.

Watch your bill carefully. They added a couple hundred dollars worth of charges when I moved and I had to fight to get them removed. Documented somewhere in this thread or the fuck comcast thread

just signed up to Netflix and I can't get dolby digital to play. It says programs display a 5.1 logo if they're DD ready but none of the titles in my library do, even new films?

What are you using to watch Netflix? A smart TV? PC? Chromecast?

A lot of models of TV(mostly Samsungs) have problems with their Netflix app playing dolby digital sound with Netflix.

Also your receiver has to support Dolby Digital Plus(not just plain dolby digital)

Also your connection has to be decent and stable or Netflix will automatically throttle you down to stereo sound.

Also Dolby Digital isn't supported if watching Netflix on a PC through a web browser, you need to use the actual Netflix App from the Microsoft App store (Win 8 and above)

Basically, getting dolby digital with Netflix is sketchy as hell

You could get a nexus player if you can find one for about $50. Get a HD homerun cable card tuner and cable card from comcast and get live tv. Silicondust is working on a DVR, coming along nicely but still in beta. I've been testing it for months and as soon as it can do DRM channels and pause live tv, I'm ditching my windows media center pc's for a couple of nexus players and a nvidia shield tv
