I like the design but, Oh god, good luck if you accidentally drop the phone (and you will) on the floor. Cracked screen potential is off the charts.

Also, won't that information bar being constantly on means it will rape your battery life?
It's an AMOLED screen, so that will keep the energy usage down by only lighting the pixels that need to be used. I imagine they could do something sensor wise to have it only lit when needed as well.

As stated, OLED screens are very very good (comparatively) on the energy side, the everything black is "off" and not consuming power so it really does not add much drain. I am sure its designed with a bezel...as much as we do not like bezels they do serve use- I was a harsh user and very heavy handed and eventually the entire bezel broke off of my pre3 - and it just took one drop that got the edge of the screen- and done mode :-(

My only gripe about the Note Edge is that you aren't getting extra screen real estate, as far as I can tell. The entire screen is 2560x1600, with the "side" screen 2560x160(10%) and the regular screen 2560x1440(90%). The normal Note 4 is a full 2560x1600 on the main screen.

Supposedly the Galaxy S6 this spring will have an "Edge" version, I want to see how that is handled, I might think about getting one. I love the Note's size, but I don't use a stylus at all, I'm paying a premium for a feature I never use.

Gimmicky bullshit. I see no way that could ever be useful. If anything I will constantly be hitting it activating shit I don't want. Even if you could lock that part of the screen, it then loses its functionality. I'm not going to take my phone out of my pocket and turn it sideways to see the time or whatever, I'm going to hit the side button and it will show me everything I need. Do not want.

Exactly, 99.999% useless from a consumers pov. Didnt the Note 3 even have a special case with a screen cover cutout that did more or less the same thing? This;

Who says it is going to need to have notifications and stuff on it? It could just be so that the screen real estate can go all the way to the edge instead of a bezel. If it is just that I might buy one.

Anyone have any experience with the LG G2? My sister in-law has one that she used for a few months but then dropped in favor of the new iPhone 6+. I can likely buy it off of her for super cheap and stop slumming it with my 4+ year old Galaxy S.

My wife has that case for her S5, she loves it. It actually adds wireless Qi charging as well(it replaces the whole backplate of the phone). Another added perk is that it turns the phone on and off instantly when the cover is opened or closed, no need to hit the power button. The only thing she really uses the screen for is taking pictures, you can use the camera from that little front screen, without having to even open the case. It's actually a pretty cool case, if you are the type of person that uses a case for extra protection, this one is a no-brainer with the extra features that it adds for about $30.

Plus, wireless charging is almost mandatory for the S5 because the micro USB port is covered with a cap that keeps it waterproof, but is a total bitch to open to plug a cord into it.

The G2 was a great phone but mine was a total shit show. Had 4 of them replaced on warranty in under a year. That said, I have a friend who has one and loves it and hasn't had a single problem with it. I suspect that I got caught in a "factory refurbished" loop where they kept sending me other people's defective phones. If hers hasn't had any problems then it might be worth a shot. It will definitely be a huge upgrade from your Galaxy S.

My wife had a G2 for about 6 months in-between hher Samsung S3 and now S5. She didn't like it at all. Battery life was mediocre and the camera was terrible. That's pretty much her two biggest priorities for a phone, and both were lacking compared to Samsung phones, so we switched her back.

These cases are pretty damn cool. Doesn't the Note 4 actually change it's front screen when it has a case like that? Changes position of clock and notifications to be able to fit into the viewable window?

Those S-View cases have their own screen on the S5 and Note 3 / 4. You can answer calls, read text messages, see the time, Step Count ( if you want ), and quick start the camera all from the little touchscreen window on the case. I have one for my note 4 and its pretty nice. Doesn't offer much in the way of protection, but I like the functionality.

Maybe compared to a Note the battery life is mediocre, but compared to a galaxy S it's going to be amazing. It was pretty much good until midnight for me most days. Ditto for the camera. It might not be top of the line, but it will be much better than what he has.

Yeah, compared to an original S, a G2 would be a huge upgrade. Compared to my wife's S3 it was a sidegrade at best and then moving to the S5 was significantly better. The G2 is probably on par with an S3 or so from my experience.

No offense man, but you are on crack if you think it's equivalent to an S3. I upgraded to it from a Galaxy Nexus which is almost identical to an S3 and there is no comparison.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciate it.

She's letting me use it for a bit since she's in no hurry to sell it, and holy fuck is this ever better than my old phone. It's like going from a mechanical hard drive to an SSD all over again. I'm not really a fan on the buttons being on the back of the phone, but I'm sure I'll get over that pretty quick. The knock-on feature doesn't seem to work very well either. Asides from all that though, a quick rooting and maybe a Cyanogen install should make me happy for years to come.

Further on that last point, are there any other really good alternatives to the basic bloatware shitstorm that comes with these phones? I've used an old version of Cyanogen on my Galaxy for the last couple years, and have no experience with anything else.

Yeah, the buttons on the back of the phone were retarded. I never got used to them and I can't believe they kept that for the G3.

Galaxy Nexus is the equivalent of S2. S3 has a quad core processor.
My mistake then. However, the point stands. The G2 is superior to an S4 spec-wise. The camera is not as good, but I still don't think it's accurate to compare it to an S3.
