$100 isn't too bad if you just want it done either.
Yeah, $100 is pretty reasonable if they guarantee their work, especially if you have any doubts about your own ability to do it. I've had family and friends ask me about fixing phone screens before and have looked at kits for various devices and $50-$75 seems a pretty common price for the parts.

I'm seeing $30-$50 on Amazon, the problem is, none of them really stand out except the one lanx linked earlier. Problem is, it's for a iPhone 5, and I have a 5s. One of the questions asked on the page if it would work with other iPhones and the answer was no. So it's just for iPhone 5.

All the rest have reviews of screens being terrible, bad touch, dead pixels, etc. If they guarantee their work, and/or provide some kind of warranty, then I think I'll just pay the $100. I want a new phone, and I have an open Project Fi invite to start saving me money, but I don't really want a Nexus 6, but it bugs the shit out of me to dump more money into a phone I don't really want anymore.

Yep, it always sucks sinking money into something you know you'll be replacing soon. That's why I've held on to my Nexus 4. I want to have a backup in case I break my OPO, so I won't be pressured in to getting a less than ideal replacement or sink too much money in to fixing it.

How to install a USB wall socket - CNET

Admittedly, I haven't done the switch over to these yet, but it's somewhere down the line of neverending projects for my home
Walking down the electrical isle at HomeDepot my wife saw these and tossed it in the cart.. they are indeed very useful :) You can get an all in one at home depot rather than the one linked in various assortments of combos and styles etcCombo - Outlets The Home Depot
Why is that more useful than just plugging it into the wall?
Means you can just carry around a USB cable rather than a full charger everywhere. Also frees up electrical sockets for other shit
The issue is, I am betting the USB wall socket is only 1A output to be safe for shitty Apple products. Anything else that takes a bigger charge like Samsung (2A) or hell, even their new Supercharger versions that go higher. The result is you have devices that charge slow as shit.

There would be no need to restrict the voltage to be safe for apple stuff. The iphone will only draw the 1 amp it needs regardless of what the capacity of the outlet is.

No, I just am really confused why a guitar amplifier company would have any idea how to make a smart phone, or why. Their amps have been terrible since the 80's/90's too.

I just had to change the battery on my Note. Second time in the 4 years I've had the phone. Obviously no phone maker market their stuff for users like me who keep the same phone for half a decade. Makes me wonder about the battery situation with the new trend from Samsung to seal in their batteries with a glass back. Anyone else who keep their phones a long ass time had to get a new battery every two years or have I just been unlucky?

I could definitely see me getting a new battery around the 2-3 year mark. I get a new phone every 2 years, but my battery is usually starting to show signs of degradation by that 2 year mark, I'd probably definitely replace it by year 3.

And that's with having phones from Samsung, LG, and HTC. Seems like cell phone batteries are only designed to stay near peak performance for about 2 years, tops. After that they go to shit in a hurry.

I'm at about the 20 month mark with my Samsung Note 3, and the batter is still pretty damn good, but I can tell it definitely has a tad less charge than when it was new, its starting to go downhill, but i'll be replacing it in a few months anyways, so I'm not concerned.

Right around 2 or 3 years seems about right. You can probably go longer if you don't use the phone a ton but if you're a heavy users you'll start to feel the older battery.

As for companies sealing the batteries. Planned Obsolescence. They know as well as consumers that people are going to start keeping their devices longer and longer as there is little reason to upgrade and the new pricing schemes from carriers encourages people to really think about getting that upgrade.

Talk with your wallet. I stopped buying HTC devices when they started locking down their boot loaders for AT&T. Same with Samsung. I'll gladly buy Oneplus or Nexus and say a big fuck you to the others. As for batteries, some devices can still be opened and it can be changed its just takes a little work.

They don't have any idea how to make one. Some other company is making a phone with Moto G guts, putting a Marshall branded shell on it and waiting for stupid people to buy it.

Ended up just replacing it at this mall kiosk. $90, was done by the time I got back from the food court, and has a 6 month warranty on the repair. Actually watched the guy do some of it, and he did it hella fast. Much faster and with more confidence than I ever would, so I feel pretty good about just doing it this way. Works like a charm again!

On the topic of batteries, I talked to the guy about replacing the iPhone battery with something better. He told me the battery can definitely be changed, but the replacement battery is the exact same. It's not any better. That bummed me out. You telling me no after market battery that fits the same exact form factor as the iPhone has come out for people to swap in? Haven't bothered to google it , but that seems odd.

Aftermarket batteries would most certainly kill your warranty, if you care about that. A lot of those come from China too so there's that...

aftermarket batteries usually suck imo, they seem to hold less charge or mAH or whatever. i actually have one that broke my s3 case, it physically expanded and got fat and halfway popped open the case. (the s3 case snaps in, i'm sure you guys are familiar with it by now)

This happened to my Droid Bionic's stock battery, so it's not just aftermarket.

And people void their warranties for any number of reasons, but sell a $50-$100 battery that doubles your iPhone battery life, one of it's biggest problems, and I'm sure plenty would do it in a heart beat. I know I would.

Batteries are actually usually very recent technology in smartphones if you are buying flagship phones. The problem is really that manufacturers design specific space compartments. You need more cells for more amps and that means more volume.

The only saving grace of these power hungry behemoths is that technology is getting better and more screen gives a bigger footprint to wedge more cells in.
