So, I like soccer. I've always liked soccer, but cannot for the life of me enjoy MLS. The matches just don't interest me as much as European matches do. So, I've decided to make an effort to watch the EPL since I discovered NBCSN airs matches in the U.S. Anyone have any input on choosing a team to support? I've done a lot of reading on the teams, but it's difficult. Should I just watch a lot of matches and "let the team choose me"? I don't want to jump on any bandwagons, but also don't want to support a lost cause that fights relegation frequently.

Thoughts?

Only people that like MLS are masochists and Americans who think they can make it as popular as MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL. It's fucking awful. My brother went to the Galaxy vs ManU match last night, and I just couldn't. I told him for weeks the Red Devils could show up drunk and win 10 nil. I don't even think the top MLS teams could compete Football League Two, let alone 1 or Championship.

Sorry, I hate MLS. Ranting now.

My dad likes going to Dodger games and bringing my two young daughters along with me. It costs a shit load of money and they spend the whole game just wondering where the beach ball is and if it's coming our way while eating a crap load of overpriced junk food. I convinced him to instead get tickets for a Galaxy game since my girls play youth Soccer, it costs way less and they were into the game the whole time. That's about all the MLS is good for in my mind.

Yeah, I know I'm a complete cunt when it comes to MLS. I just hate it in the same way I hate AAA/AA/A baseball fans. Los Doyers is expensive, true. But since you're out here you know there's fucktards that pay half as much to see the Quakes or Lake Elsinore's team as Angels tickets cost.

Anyway. Carry on.

edit: And at least you're taking your kids to see Soccer. That's the only way it's going to become huge here is by getting the kids to play it. Too many parents shit on soccer and force their kids towards baseball/football to be cool. I watch Premier with my son (and sometimes my daughter, she really doesn't like it though). I probably should take them to games, but I just hate Galaxy fans by and large :/

From my limited exposure to MLS, the league seems to be attracting more players from abroad. I would have thought the quality would have improved somewhat in recent years.

From the top of my head, some notable footballers who went to the MLS:

Thierry Henry
Robbie Keane
Clint Dempsey
Frank Lampard
Tim Cahill
Jermaine Defoe
David Villa

It is getting better. Again I'm amassive cuntwhen it comes to MLS. The latest irritation was fucking Donovan trashing the US coach and team. The guy who couldn't get picked up by a premier team in his wildest dream had the balls to do that after his "All time MLS goal" record like that means jack shit. What Klinsman and the US did was exceed anyones wildest expectation, and meanwhile Donovan is on TV saying "Well, there was a lot of coaching errors..." instead of doing everything he could to support US soccer, and talking about passing the torch and shit like that instead.

But you're right Neki, they are attracting more and more players. And with the USA getting a new tournament, it's huge. We'll attract even more attention. I just gotta stop posting about MLS.

edit: And not that anyone cares, but this all stems from me living in SoCal where I constantly deal with co-workers and friends who insist Donovan is a top-10 player in the world, and teams like the Galaxy are just as good as any Spanish or Premier team. It rustles my jimmies in a way nothing else does knowing the Galaxy probably couldn't even beat Cardiff if they were spotted a 3 goal lead.

My Dad and I were actually having this conversation the other day in that the MLS should try to mould itself more into Portuguese or Italian league in that the clubs can be an initial stepping stone for young South American players. I'm not sure how you would overcome the issue of 3rd party ownership but I'm sure most of the kids aren't making more than $100k a year which the MLS could easily afford all the while offering a US VISA which for any players that don't eventually make it I'm sure has a value of it's own. Being able to see the next Messi, Cafu, Tevez, etc. which certainly provide more value than seeing a 35 year old Fat Frank running around.

You know the MLS is bad when even United can go 90 minutes without getting scored on

Yeah, I read a lot of articles about being a new fan of the Premier League, and they all seemed to agree that Arsenal, ManU, ManCity, and Chelsea were the biggest bandwagon teams for new fans to support. From all the stuff I have read about the clubs lately, I am thinking about either Everton or Liverpool.

This was from my write-up of all the contending EPL teams in the World Cup thread. If it's between Everton and Liverpool there really is no choice:

Everton - Called the Toffees, they have a long history of being 2nd best to Liverpool in everything. Their current owner is Bill Kenwright who made his money as a theatre and play producer and scrounges for pennies every year just to pay the bills. They're currently coached by Roberto Martinez who's thought of as a young and bright coach on his way up, unfortunately for Everton he'll be moving on to better pastures next year. They are located in Liverpool, their home stadium is a wood barn called Goodison which is seperated by about a mile from Anfield and their biggest rival is Liverpool. Their best player is Tim Howard as Ross Barkley will be sold to Manchester United before he ever realizes his potential.

Liverpool - Have no nickname, they are the 2nd most successful team in England behind Manchester United as they haven't won a league title since 1989. They're currently owned by Fenway Sports Group who own the Boston Red Sox, this is actually somewhat fitting as Boston and Liverpool share a lot of similarities. FSG is currently trying to turn around the club which were almost bankrupted by the previous American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillette. Currently led by Brendan Rodgers who most feel is one of the best young coaches in the world, he has the team play a very attacking style of football with a young and improving team. The team is located in Liverpool which is 20 miles from Manchester in the Northwest of England, they play at Anfied which is about to be expanded and their main rival is Manchester United. Their best player is Luis Suarez who when not biting people is trying to transfer to Spain to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid.

I watched a replay this morning and the match was fun indeed. New formation/tactics [3/5/2 - reasoning that Van Gaal sees the obvious imbalance with having 4 #10 style players and no real quality wingers - and opting to play 2 strikers, and the CB area being weak]. New midfielder Herrera looked pure class.. long may this continue! MLS side gifted the 2nd and 3rd goals with absolutely woeful defending, but then when both teams subbed in and out a gazillion players, Galaxy were so easy to get through.
