No, Curt BORROWED that money. That's a lot different. Curt got fucked because he kept needing to find new investors to pay off those loans every month with interest.

Chris has a lot more breathing room than Curt did, because no one is knocking at his door. If/when he fucks up, it'll be because he blew all the money and can't keep the lights on, not because his loan payments were due.
Curt did the worst thing possible, he spent a large part of his personal fortune (loan guarentees, etc). Which, in the entertainment industry, isusuallya recipe for disaster.

Chris is spending a large part of other peoples money. Basic CEO 101, let other people take the risks and you take the profit / accolades.

The thing is, if things do go bad...it will be like 38 Studio, it blow up and no one will really see it coming. It's not like Chris is gonna come out months before and say, hey guys we're running out of money and it looks like we won't be able to finish the game...and employees you might not get paid next week.

He will until the last minute have the same speech that all his fine.

Hopefully what they show give people back some confidence in the entire project.

"They are going to show the first large world map at GamesCom - you are orbiting a gas giant that is 182,000 km in diameter with 3 or 4 moons which will take 2.5 hours to go between the moons at top speed in the fastest ship; because of this they will have the quantum drive quick jump to get between stuff but it's all in the same area/same level so no loading screens." - form the most recent 10 for the chairman.

If that thing is actually at gamescom that'll be pretty interesting to see. The scale of the map seems gigantic, especially if that scale is how the PU solar systems get made.

What they claim they will show at these conventions and what they actually show has been completely different. This game comes with more ifs than a chinese phone book

Well unless people start looking at VC funding sheets and start seeing them for money values.

I think the only valid difference here is RSI seems to be on gift-funds right now, so if they can reach certain milestones they can probably secure some funding from Rhode Island.

Let's say they burn through their funds short of putting out the PU, I think all other modules are guaranteed at this point, but let's say they do. Could they not turn to a publisher of some sort to make it to the end of development? Seems like 85 million worth of development that no one ever has to recoup would be incredibly tempting if they absolutely had to get outside funding.

No way would Chris Roberts goes into an agreement with a publisher for that type of funding at this point. Due to having to split profits and most likely only see royalties. At that point my guess is he would launch what he has and turn out a gigantic microtransaction market even more than what is already planned.

This is the correct answer.

It's something that has been discussed numerous times internally both in the Subscriber section and the Concierge section of the forums. The vast majority is OK with it so long as it isn't pay to win. I mean there is no way to avoid that even with the current plan but what they mean is you should be able to invest a reasonable amount of your own time and get whatever you want without spending a dime. No ship and no weapons should be behind a paywall. If they put ships there it's fine as long as you can earn it yourself at your own pace. It's a very fucking thin line but it would put them head and shoulders above a lot of other MMOs that purposefully put the very best things in their games (looking at you STO) behind a fucking paywall. At least in some of those games you can earn in game money and buy those ships but they are so fucking expensive that you would literally have to spend months grinding for one ship and if in that game if it's a 3 pack I have to laugh. Unless you have a little business empire going you could spend the next 6-12 months grinding just for that one thing. That's fucking bad. That should not happen to people in Star Citizen.

Someone correct me but I think Guild Wars 2 has probably the most similar microtransaction market. Except they don't put gear on it at all. SC would put gear on it but also make it 100% obtainable on your own.

I can't see Chris fucking everyone by putting ships and gear behind a paywall with no other way to get it. That would piss even the most hardcore supporters off and I think that was echoed pretty well in those threads on the forum. It would totally backfire and virtually instantly.

In before "it's not pay to win, you can suck space dick down at the docks for six years to save up enough to buy a torpedo bomber then fly up satan's asshole to kill the supercarrier Robert's sold to millionaires to bring the game to market!"

Thank fuck there is no xp in this game. Those poor fuckers joining EVE now are fucked. The longer the game goes the farther apart people will get in skill. I suppose you can catch up eventually if you stick to something extremely niche but why? Why limit yourself? That's really poor game mechanics.

The closest SC will come to that is tools and clothes that you wear that will assist you in certain professions or tasks. Wearing engineer clothes in a capital ship with profession specific tools attached to it is going to come in super handy when shit breaks. You could in theory try the same shit in your pilot's uniform but you will be severely handicapped as the difficulty of the mini-game (repair etc) goes up. Same for mining, science, mechanics etc.

So long as they don't put the profession specific tools and clothes only behind a paywall it will be fine.

I can literally turn off the other players so I guess I really couldn't give two shits about the cash shop either way.

Lol @ sc fans not wanting p2w.
They are not p2w Tuco, they are pledging toward the development of the game right now. It's a totally different thing.

Do you or did you play EVE? Your opinion of the skill system makes me think you only have biased, third-hand knowledge of it.

No matter how you view it though, in the end EVE allows you to buy characters (thus, skill points) with the in-game currency you obtain through play. At that point buying your premium engineer toolbelt and expensive_ship01 in SC is similar to buying that specialized character in EVE.

Variise's comment regarding Eve also made me think he has no actual experience with that game. His viewpoint is shared by many others, though.

I played EVE off and on for 6-7 years.

In what way did I say anything that's incorrect?

EDIT:

So I went and checked to see what the current value of my toon is without gear just skills. It's roughly $600 in PLEX. This is on a character that has what I would consider the core skills to do virtually any combat related role. Forget non-combat as that would take significantly more skill points (about double).

The most typical pledge for SC is $45 and the overall average is somewhere around $90 due to so many giving more.

The only way you could possibly compare the two skill wise, not ships, is by comparing the cost of what it takes to pilot/do what you want to do. Essentially having the freedom you want.

In EVE that would roughly be around $900-1200 worth of PLEX you would need to convert into ISK to buy a comparable character.

Now we don't have a clue what the in-game cost of every single "Profession" clothing and tool will be in SC but that's what you would need to compare it to.

You two characters clearly haven't thought this through.
