I'm not familiar with him. How is he a failure?
He has a history of promising the world and delivering absolutely horrible, messy games that barely function. He's also pretty much a text book narcissist that threatens to sue people who talk poorly about him and his stuff over the internet, bans people who criticize him in anyway, and gets into flame wars with people on the internet like he's mentally a child.

If you look at his past games and the one that he's making now, they all feature a lot of the things SC is also promising, and while SC being successful is far from a sure-thing, it's already way closer to doing a lot of the things that he's tried to do and failed at over the last decade. As a full disclosure I've got a massive $40 into SC. I certainly hope it's a massive success because I've always wanted this type of game, but I'm not a huge fanboy hundreds of dollars in.

Legitimate criticism is fine but this is just a dog and pony show to feed Derek's ego and get publicity. And I suppose it's worked at that, since the vast majority of people who are tuning into this drama would have never heard of this guy otherwise.

Ah, sounds like quite the character. Should be interesting to see if his predictions are accurate or if he's just a sour grapes dildo

If this game crashes and burns it takes kickstarter with it, and maybe all other gaming related crowdfunding. Which is a tragedy because D:OS and Pillars of Eternity were pretty goddamn good. Especially pillars. Wasteland also alright.

Some people in Austin were fired for fucking around and/or not delivering, and more and more development is being moved to Germany where they have surplus veteran CryEngine developers. People can't live in Austin these days for what CiG can afford to pay them anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if most/all of their development jobs in Austin get cut.

If 1.3 delivers next month (as has been hyped), there will already be enough game to play to justify what most people have spent. If you buy the Citizen Con hype, we are getting multi-crew and FPS around that time. Add that to Arena Commander and Planetside, and you have all the components of the PU. They just need to keep iterating on it.

The departures that took place last week were a community rep and an assistant marketing manager. People are freaking out because they were visible members of the team and to people with very little real world job experience, that means that they are somehow very important. They weren't.

The only troubling bit of dirt that DS managed to bring to light was a long letter by a senior character artist (no longer working for CIG) that basically talked a lot of trash about Chris Roberts micro managing everything, and the art director not know what the fuck he was doing. This seems troubling, but you have to remember that he was based in Austin, and was one of the earlier hires. Take what he says with a grain of salt because, as is evident, character art has not delivered. I'm sure he wanted to spread the blame. Not to mention that some real talent is working out of Foundry 42 UK and Frankfurt - I have a feeling a lot of the jobs that are starting to disappear in Austin are being picked up by more competent people in those studios.

Could I be wrong? Sure. But I feel like I've had my money's worth just with the entertainment of following this game. If anyone is worried about their pledge money, then you probably pledged more than you should have.

Btw, Derek Smart is a complete moron (don't mind the German, there are subtitles):

Funny how all the people who disagree with Smart can only attack the man and not his points. I think everyone knows that he's right, really.

Unless someone here wants to step forward and actually be dumb enough to say "RSI did not use backer money to produce the short filmElle." Anyone? Anyone at all?

Derek Smart has the same problem Utnayan has. They are biased and chosen their stance. They then spout whatever bullshit they think people will believe. A reasonable person shouldn't listen to whatever they have to say because his motivation and foundation is dishonest.

Does that mean that he doesn't have any correct points? No. I'm sure RSI did a bunch of goofy shit with backer money. People just shouldn't take him on his word about anything.

What's the evidence that Elle was produced with backer funds?

I don't know that I would say that Ut's and DS's motivations aren't honest, or at least, I wouldn't say that about Ut. If anything I'd say that Ut is too honest. But Ut takes a very cynical view of the gaming industry and he loves to go after Studios/Devs.
