Well that's partially because gijoe and transformers were created by Hasbro to sell toys. Star wars toys came AFTER the success.

Also, Abrams said that star wars has always been a movie series where dads take their sons and wanted mom's to be able to take their daughters. So all the makeup merchandise makes sense with that

Yeah it's one thing to create a toy that has to sell itself on it's own merits. Castle Greyskull needed to be awesome enough to move units. The selling point of the Deathstar play set was it let you recreate moments from the movie with your action figures. Besides, there really wasn't any way to make a play set that could capture the enormity of the Deathstar and still be affordable to middle class families much less be something they could reasonably store away when it wasn't in use without requiring a hour to assemble/disassemble.

My 8 year old son brought up an interesting conversation today... he pointed out that we had the opportunity to see Yoda's true power in the prequels so he had asked me if we will get to see Leia's connection or strength with the force? (He's assuming at some point we'll get to see Luke's). I wouldn't be surprised if both Luke and Leia end us dying at some point in the this new trilogy but saving others by displaying a powerful use of the force.

Any thoughts or speculation about Luke and Leia and their force use in this new trilogy?

I picture leia more like a Jedi Consular from KOTOR if she has any powers, but my guess is she never formally trains with the force and only uses it sparingly to "feel" shit now and then.

I'm hoping for a Luke moment where his powers have become godlike, like rocks and shit are just floating all around him all the time without him even thinking about it.
I'm pretty sure at this point that the Skywalker connection is only Kylo Ren. After the media blitz this week, the thing I took away was Adam Driver saying on Stern that he never auditioned, he just went and talked with JJ and six months later they told him he had the part. As I recall, the Rey and Finn characters were never defined by their race, so they never had to look like anyone. I still think Rey ends up being trained by Luke and going full Jedi, though.

I think not knowing Rey's last name intentionally and her ending up/flying the falcon is too much to ignore. In addition it seems Kylo knows her already from some of the sound bites from the dolls.

Hopefully for Luke we do. I don't think we will see any such thing from Leia.

This is a back to basics attempt to make money on nostalgia. There will be a Skywalker family angle somewhere, somehow.

After what they did with Anikin/Vader, I'm hoping they can simply use their incredibly advanced cybernetic technology to recreate a new body for Leia to look like this again:

They gave Luke a new hand that looked fucking real as the old one. Why not?

Seems like half of Han's lines are just corny wisecracks. Doesn't seem that bad really though, but still.

Pretty sure his lines in all the movies were just wisecracks.

Also not sure what is going on with Finn, I mean he was trained as a storm trooper right? He seems like a new kid who has never been in a fight not a trained solider. Every scene he seems to be freaking out. I would think that unless it was like his first day on the job he would have a little more bravado by then, even being a storm trooper. If all the other stormtroopers were as scared as him the empire would fucking fail in a day.

RLM had a theory that Finn is a spy for the Alliance, that is why he's wearing the stormtrooper suit, fled in a TIE fighter and always scared for his life. Not really a fighter.
