Just finished watching episodes I-III with the kids. We've been watching them each Friday night and I have to say i'm looking forward to seeing IV-VI again. I had taken a pretty long hiatus thanks to Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter giving me a much more entertainment and less frustration than the more recent Star Wars prequels and re-releases, re-masterings, whatever.
However, i've gotten caught up in some of the hype so we've been watching them again, plus my kids have never really watched them in their entirety. What I have found up to this point in regards to episodes I-III, I found that I despised the scenes that I hated far more than I remember. The dialogue at moments (especially the lover scenes) were just absolutely dreadful. The movies could have improved an entire grade with some better writing. I will say Ewan McGregor was still the best part of the movie. He's really all they got right with the exception of the space and battles scenes. The cast is just significantly weaker. There was a time when I would have considered myself a fanboy but now I remember when they fell so far in my book. My kids enjoyed the prequels though and i'm curious to see their reactions to the original releases. Interesting to see it from a new perspective. I probably watched Star Wars at the same age as my oldest. I'm really hoping that these new episodes breath some refreshing life into the franchise. It's sad that it was tarnished so badly from a child of the 80's perspective but they have a chance to restore a significant piece of our pop culture.

As far as I know that was a hoax. That rumor has been around a while, and if I remember correctly, Disney doesn't hold the distribution rights to the originals. I sure wish they did though.

Apparently those are from the laser discs, which have been coveted as the closest source to the original cuts, but don't even have dolby surround.

Although its still not official confirmed Disney sourced, but seems like there might be something behind the rumors.

Most definitely. There are fans like me out there, who haven't bought any of the DVD's or Blu-Ray's since 2006, when they issued DVD's with bonus material of the original theatrical release taken from a copy of the laser discs. It's a shitty copy but at least it's the theatrical release and has none of the shitty Lucas added garbage.
