i may be expressing an unpopular opinion, but people are participating in the discussion its generating. the only real problem with my reported post was that it was excessively long, and when i realized i went back and spoilered it for length. posts like this^ are the true thread disruptions.

If you can't even be honest about the OT's place in cinematic history then your opinion about Star Wars means fucking jack shit.

i love the original trilogy. i am a Star Wars geek. like i said, i would not be here if i didn't love them. already said that. i loved this movie too, tho. but subject the OT to the same level of scrutiny that people are subjecting TLJ to and the OT falls apart too.

sit back and enjoy the spectacle. that's what Star Wars is about.

...seriously?

How Star Wars changed the special effects industry

Here's one article, and if you're not mentally retarded you should be able to find about a million more that say the exact same thing.

Despite the flaws, the OT still tell a story that people want to hear about, and is full of characters that audiences care about. The Last Jedi has... milked the 30-40 year old names and faces of the most marketable characters, and while it was dragging all of that vintage baggage through the mud it kind of almost told something that slightly resembles a story, I guess.

and the slow speed chase for a whole movie was dumb.
To be fair, there's no indication it's a slow speed chase.

I saw it a second time on Sunday with a different group of friends and liked it more on the second viewing. The shock of the jokes was considerably diminished and there weren't quite as many as I remembered, although they are mostly in scenes that should have more gravity. The whole casino shit-show didn't take as much screen time as I remembered. Overall, with all my expectations gone, I thought it was a better movie. Though not perfect and I wish they made different decisions at many parts

Finally got around to seeing this tonight.

This was a high budget B movie. It was objectively bad. Every other scene had some form of terrible, cheesy comedic relief and it followed the TFA formula of "Here's a problem, OOOOH HERE'S A SUPER CONVENIENT SOLUTION!". Terribly written and it was long... it dragged on for so fucking long.

And then Luke brushed his shoulder off. And that's when I realized I was not the target audience for Star Wars anymore. That was effectively the entirety of this movie. Slightly masked pop culture nods aimed at teenagers and young 20 somethings. Disney isn't making movies for those of us who remember the originals. They are using characters we recognize to make movies for a younger generation that I just cannot relate to anymore. Oh well I guess.

I don't know if I'll even bother with ep 9. I definitely won't be paying to see it in a theater.

Special shout out to the best line in the movie:

"That's how we'll win. Not by killing those we hate, but by protecting those we love. *KISS*". Pretty sure there will be a vampire crossover at some point.

Watched it a second time, I actually think there ws a story here now. The director just missed it. The casino wasn't pointless, it was a spectacular failure. Poes and Finns rebellion and plan gets almost everyone slaughtered. The issue is there is zero character development, no one learns shit, no one even seems to give a shit that literally everyone died. You take this exact same movie and instead of the stupid high fives at the end it is rey Finn and Poe just absolutely destroyed that their naivete got everyone killed and vow not to just act rashly and the story would suddenly not be shit.

I feel like at the end of empire you could really feel how the failures of the characters in the movie impacted them at the end and you just couldn't with this one even though it almost felt like that's what they wanted with the plot

You didn't know? If you just keep protecting those you love, the First Order leaves you alone. It's like that Gandhi quote.

Lol had Luke's image not shown up, Rose's decision would have killed everybody (although don't get me started on how Finn's ship isn't absolutely unequivocally disintegrated long before it crashes into the weapon anyways lolol). But hey, it was framed as Rose saving Finn from a dumb decision, shocker. Both decisions were dumb. Finn's idea shouldn't have worked and if it was going to work Rose was totally idiotic to "save" him. While we're on the topic of these two, how the fuck did they get back in? They got Reeboks?

Yeah not to thrilled with this one, loved Force Awakens even with its similarities to New Hope but it worked and was fun. So disappointed with many scenes and the movie in general to be honest, looked fantastic but the story was so back and forth that it was so off putting to invest in anything plotwise so i just stared at the screen till it finished. Kids LOVED it though.

Yeah, it was all over the place. About half-way through I really started to notice how long, and drawn out the movie was. In comparison, Blade Runner 2049 was quite a bit longer and I didn't feel exhausted before the halfway mark.

Great post. Just like the NFL, comic books and other forms of entertainment for fanatics, they knew the die-hards would come especially after they did a competent VII. This(and VII) are meant to usher in the next group of fanatics and was directed towards the younger, less discerning audience. They will assume the same for IX because the last two movies have already made a fuckload of money.

it's almost like we were kids when we first decided we loved the original trilogy and Star Wars was never meant to be subject to adult scrutiny all along...

Not it at all.

Unlike the other part 1 and 2 of a trilogy this movie closes off every major thread. It has poor design decision one after another. It's an objective mess regardless of it being a Star Wars story.

The royal guards block lightsaber attacks with their armor that later on in the same fight doesn't block lightsaber attacks ....

How does the movie end? A millenium falcon with around 15 people on it and several star destroyers in orbit directly above the planet and a huge Order military. There is no real "threads" available to pick up from. No properly unresolved plot lines. Nothing to pick up from.

Oh wait, we have a kid with a broom also. So there's that.
