Ok, so in TFA, there's a whole thing on how Luke's lightsaber is calling to Rey, and how Maz (the little old lady thing) kinda knows about Rey, etc. And it's all for nothing. This movie tells us she's literally just an abandoned orphan who happens to be extremely force sensitive.
Assuming Kylo didn't lie... if he was Vader he wouldn't lie, just use harsh honesty that manipulates - but he's no Vader

I left this pretty disappointed. The highs were high, but the lows were really low for me.

From the start, there’s the ridiculous phone call prank with Poe and Hux and it immediately takes away any teeth Hux might have had for the movie. Instant buffoon and he’s impossible to ever see as a real threat. It also just set the tone entirely wrong for the whole movie. There was way too much idiotic humor in everything. Not a single dramatic or meaningful scene was without some cheesey joke or goofing off. Tension and drama were just constantly taken away for the sake of shitty humor.

I’m usually the last person to bitch about sci-fi stuff not being accurate or real enough, but how is that bitch in the bomber laying down next to wide open bay doors into fucking space still breathing? There was no hint of any kind of shield or force field at the opening. Later during the BSG-esque race through space when Snokes ship is bombarding the transports, why did those shots shoot on catapult like arcs? That doesn’t make any sense in space.

Anachronisms all over the place, characters saying things like “what the hell” or “godspeed,” etc. Its really minor I know but it constantly ruined the immersion for me throughout the movie. Same with Planet Vegas. I get the idea that they wanted to show a place where rich folks hang out, but the style of the setting just felt like it was from a completely different movie about the 1920s with a couple of aliens and a cantina song reimagined thrown in.

Leia’s Mary poppins shit is one of the most bizarre scenes I think I’ve ever seen. The fuck did I watch there.

Ackbar getting BTFO after seeing him I think once with one line or so of dialog. Shit I didn’t even know it was him until it was casually mentioned he was gone a few minutes later. Instead of having purple hair take over, Ackbar could have filled that whole role and given him a better send off for an old fan character. The other chick was just annoying and had less poise and commanding presence than my elementary school teachers. Weak character all around just meant to be a foil for Poe.

Finn/Rose storyline I could have done without entirely. Rose was a weak and slightly annoying character with no charisma and was too much of a goofy/nerdy sidekick for me to ever take her struggle over the loss of her sister seriously. There was also 0 reason to turn it into a weird romance plot. Phazma was also completely wasted again. The fight with her and Finn was cool up until the last second when we get an “oh hey” and a final blow. That’s the climax they give us? Again a dramatic moment ruined because they wanted to be cheeky.

This turned into a bitchier rant than I expected but I still liked the movie, it just didn’t live up to the hype for me and with a little cleanup I probably would have loved it.
There were a lot of good points in the movie. The visuals were amazing and some of the sunset/silhouette shots near the end were gorgeous. The Rey/Kylo plots were the best parts and I thouroughly enjoyed those. We’re seeing it again tonight in IMAX so this time I can go in and just enjoy the view.

Heir to the Empire has an important role in the meta-fiction of Star Wars in that it launched the books which kept much of the saga alive during the 'dark times' after ROTJ. It is, however, not good. Thrawn is a great character, but otherwise the story is garbage and set the stage for a whole sequence of garbage that was the EU.

I'll disagree with this. Zahn's trilogy is extremely good and faithful to the characters while building on the known SW universe and adding a lot of lore. I don't disagree at all that Thrawn being such a strong character and antagonist helps carry that, but his trilogy is well thought out and sets itself up from start to finish.

Other writers who weren't nearly as good came after and made up what is the "garbage" of the EU.

I never finished that trilogy. I tried multiple times back in the 90s. I must have read Heir 3-4 times and then always stalled out somewhere in the second book.

This movie is very much in family with ESB for this very reason. It is different, it's not the same kind of movie with a Saturday matinee Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon motif, there is action but the action serves the characters rather than the other way around.

Can't Bight is an integral part of the story not because it is an adventure for Finn Rose and BB8, but because it shows us the state of the Galaxy as a whole. Rich people off partying, the lower classes being kept low, no one much cares for the fact that the New Republic government got blown to bits or that the First Order is taking over. Life, for them, goes on as it has before and so long as you don't piss off too many people with guns you can live perfectly content.

There's a lot that gets communicated here: the New Republic wasn't a grand new Utopia following the horrific years of the Empire's rule... It was just another government and one that didn't really do much for anyone save the people at the top.

On the flip side we have Luke who is tired of all the bullshit about the Sith and the Jedi and all of it and even goes so far as to call out the Jedi order for their implicit role in creating Sidious. He knows the Force is separate from the Jedi religion and wants to just let the Jedi part die off. His mistake is in assuming that the Jedi and the religion that spawned them are the same. As Yoda points out the original foundations of the Jedi we're not particularly great or particularly wise, they we're just old and adherence to that is what lost them everything. The power of the Jedi is not the Force but the Hope they bring. Nope he isn't going to stop the First Order with a laser sword and moving some rocks, but the legend of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi is what captures the hearts and minds of those who will resist as we see in the kids who are recounting the battle of Crait.

Rey's story is one of personal introspection. She is as caught up in the legends of the Jedi as anyone else and believes that Luke holds the answer to her problems. He doesn't. She believes that she feels good in Kylo and she's probably right there is some there, but she misinterprets her vision of the future. She thinks Kylo turns from the dark side and strikes Snoke down and then joins her. Kylo, on the other hand, sees a future where Rey turns and joins him in striking down Snoke. She does strike Snoke down but not because she has embraced the dark. That whole sequence of them fighting together against the Praetorian Guard is amazing because each thinks the other has come over to their side when in fact theirs was an alliance of convenience against a common foe. Rey's thoughts go straight to the dark hole on the island without any preconceived notion about the light and the dark. This scares Luke because he's well versed in the teachings of the Jedi which call for strict vigilance against the darkness and that cutting oneself off from emotion is what protects you from the darkness. Turns out that was bullshit as well. Rey enters the cave and finds darkness but also her question of her origins is revealed. That's it. Note that unlike Luke entering the tree on Dagobah she doesn't enter with fear of the darkness, rather curiosity and in so doing finds her answer: she's Rey. She isn't fancy Skywalker or whatever royalty. She doesn't come from some Force power lineage, she is just a junkrat from nowhere. She is who she is and nothing more. She knows right from wrong and learns that the Force isn't part of her, she's a part of it and being a Force user doesn't give you divine right, it just means you have a more specialized role to play in things.

Ultimately Luke brings hope back using his long distance illusion to great effect. He inspires people and serves as a symbol for standing up against the First Order, but it is just a trick. His illusion takes no real action other than simply being seen.. but it's enough to distract Kylo long enough for everyone to escape. At the end he has worn himself ragged, the trick he pulled took a lot more out of him that he ever showed with the illusion and he passes into the Force as we see twin suns setting. In so doing he has fufilled the prophecy, the son of suns has indeed brought balance to the Force...just not quite the way that the old Jedi Order intended. He has created a new Jedi in Rey, one who accepts the Force for what it is...free of the mantra and misconceptions.

The final shot of the kids playing shows us the ultimate power of Hope in helping to combat the forces of tyrrany. Some unknown kid hears the story of Luke Skywalker and goes out to stare up at the stars, but not before grabbing the broom with the Force, perhaps unaware that it happens.

Yeah, you're spoilers reflect why I ended up enjoying the movie so much, flaws and all, but can totally understand why other people would hate it. For sure there were a lot of flaws and parts of it really didn't feel like a Star Wars movie, at ALL, but the parts that sort of try to comment on the world and the relationships you go into detail on were just really fascinating to me. Everything lore-wise going into this movie got tossed and brutally torn down in TLJ and i'm not sure whats left is good or bad, and I guess episode 9 is going to have a lot to answer for.

Talked to my brother today morning who also saw it and he HATED it, we are same age and watched the trilogy growing up and loved them all so it is fascinating to see how polarizing the new movie is becoming. Its 93% on RT, 8.2/10 with critics, but only 61% / 3.5 out of 5 with audience.

There's definitely still some high points, and definitely Star Wars in it to enjoy. A lot of it just feels like they had a list of "moments" they wanted in the film, along with certain tones they wanted for each character (old and new)...and they just didn't take the time to come up with very good ways to make it all fit together.

That would also be a perfect description of Justice League. Good moments that don't really fit well together. (but that movie had a fuck load else wrong with it)

Visuals were indeed really good and I dig them little crystal fox dudes.

The humor based gripes are understandable. It's the same shit with Marvel movies. On the other hand the prequels took themselves way too seriously but anyhow you've got a point.

Personally, anachronisms don't bother me unless you're talking about a period piece where accurate parlance would add to realism. But we're talking laser swords & giant bipedal griffonshires. In space.

Loved it.

Much better than Ep7.
3rd best in the series (ANH -> ESB -> TLJ)

----
No spoilers:

This was a Star Wars movie through and through. It had the goofiness you would see in the originals that never seemed to make sense, but was just there, making the Galaxy feel more "real". Loved it. Anyone thinking the jokes/silliness is a negative is not a true Star Wars fan. Watch the originals again.

It had the intimate storyline. This movie was about the characters. It wasn't about showcasing 50 different planets and a massive CGI budget, it was about honing in on the characters and telling their stories.

It had some twists and turns and even presented some new questions.. Good questions, not the "midichlorians" debacle.

It parallels ESB a lot, but also differs a lot, and it's very different from any other in the series, good or bad. I think there are some major revelations that go a bit unnoticed and isn't as in your face compared to "I'm your father".

----
Luke:
So this was his film and we get a lot of the backstory, but are still left wondering and asking. He senses the darkness in Kylo, and for a moment he's impulsive and might end him. Seems like Luke was falling to the dark side himself. How could a Jedi so powerful have that first instinct? I was kinda hoping Luke was turning "bad". But it also makes sense in a way. A big theme of this movie is Balance, Darkness & Light, etc. Even the island has the yin/yang symbols and Snokes even talks about Darkness & Light to meet it. I think the major revelation is how Dark & Light is within everyone and there is no pure darkness/light.

Also the Force isn't some genetic thing like the prequels talk about. It's literally the connective tissue of the galaxy. It could just be called Gravity. It's not some magical property or religion. It also means there isn't a "dark or light" side of the force. The Dark/Light is literally just the human element.

How one can be more powerful than another is still a big question, but is probably just related to your human senses & focus. Luke's power was demonstrated to be quite substantial. The new power of projecting across the galaxy is cool. A little cliche, but kinda makes sense. Since the Force connects everything then I can see where it makes sense. I see it as a parallel to Gravity Waves. Force Waves criss-crossing the Galaxy.

I think Luke's peril made sense. We see in an earlier scene that rain water from the island was on Kylo's hands after he "connected" with Rey. I was waiting to see Luke sliced in half on the island, but they didn't go that far. I think it's believable that the lightsaber did connect with Luke in a manner similar to Vader & Obi Wan, even if it was from such a great distance.

Leia:
I was ready for Leia to die but only because of the RL circumstance. But honestly, this story is as much about Leia as it is Luke. If she was still alive, then I think her surviving would be more acceptable. As it stands, they either need a new actress, or a CGI Leia will return.

The story of Leia is pretty sad, honestly. This entire saga she's been leading the Rebellion/Resistance and never actually succeeding. And now in her ripe old age she's planning YET AGAIN to rebuild the rebellion. In a way it makes you ask some very big questions.

She's like the embodiment of the typical: "Never give up", "Fight for what's right", "look out for the little people", etc etc.

But in the grand scheme of things, her life has been failure after failure, with minuscule victories scattered about. It's like her entire life has been devoted to "saving a galaxy". But can it be saved? Is there actually hope? Will the Empire always exist/succeed?

Is the Rebellion actually the "bad" guys?

They tried to ram it into our minds that there are poor, oppressed and tortured, and they need to be saved/heard. But isn't this just a false reality? There will always be hardships. Leia's fighting a losing battle.

It's humorous how her bloodline has been so closely connected to both sides. Empire & Resistance. Both institutions controlled by a Skywalker.

This film really is meant to display how dire her situation is now. Down to a few hundred people remaining. You have the massive Empire chasing a few pissants around the galaxy. It's very humorous, and there isn't really a stated goal. It's the same goal. "Overthrow the Empire", but it's basically just lip service now. At this point you just know there will always be an Order/Empire/whoever-has-the-most-guns

And it was a nice touch to throw in the Arms dealer selling weaponry to both sides. Just reinforces that the whole saga is based around false expectations.

So who do we route for now?

Rey:
The unknown meant to represent every person, no matter their station in life. The new Luke, except her lineage is full of nobodies.. Or so we assume.

Was Kylo really telling the truth, or did he take advantage of a weakness? Maybe he sensed she didn't really know and then filled her mind with nothingness. This can easily be flipped on its head next Episode. I will believe what he said is the truth for now, it fits the overall theme of this movie, but it could also be false and she may still have ties to the main characters. The way he grilled her and then spoke so quickly can easily be a sign of him lying.

She finds Luke originally to bring him into the fold, but then decides to train and find herself. I think the major points are that she never really trained under Luke, but she did use the island in her own way and to discover on her own.

Also the connection with Kylo, even if at the design of Snoke, is still a major development. These two each think they can turn the other, but for what ultimate purpose? As stated above, the Dark/Light is a human element of the Force, remove that and these two have the same goal: Join Together.

They could theoretically come together and create a new order or religion. Kylo doesn't really have a major objective right now other then "Kill Mom! Kill Rey!". It's kinda petty tbh. Has the "Supreme Leader" ever had any other objective then "Kill the Jedi!"? Well the Last Jedi is dead so it's about time for a new objective.

I think Rey's main objective is to continue pursuing Kylo, for whatever reason. She could just as easily return to a life of a nobody, but this connection with Kylo will prevent that now. She will need to confront him to ultimately put it to rest. The ultimate cliche will be if they actually find a way to make peace.

Will Ep9 be the conclusion, or does it kickoff a new trilogy? We could easily see ep9 ending with Rey completely taking over Leia's role, and Kylo fulfilling the role of the Emperor. Kicking off yet another trilogy where it's Resistance/Rebellion vs Order/Empire/etc.

Or do we get the Rey overthrowing Kylo and taking the seat of power for herself. Does she remain Light, or turn Dark?

Or do they come together, maybe even romantically, and birth a new generation of Skywalkers to rule the galaxy?

Kylo:
The redemption arc is real. He doesn't kill his Mom. He kills Snoke/Saves Rey. He was betrayed by Luke. Etc etc. They are really pushing the Light side of him this episode, but then we remember he killed Han. And then he has a major temper tantrum at the end. This dude is all over the place. And the Resistance escape because of his ineptitude/vengeance.

The other guy (Hux?sp?) was ready to put a blaster to his head if Kylo laid 1 second longer. There will for sure be some power struggle between these two, and maybe Hux finds a way to overthrow Kylo, or rebirth Snoke, or finds another Force user to aid him. Especially with him warning Kylo not to get distracted, and proven completely right, will certainly be moves being made.

Maybe we get a Rey saves Kylo arc next Episode. Not emotionally, but actually in a physical manner, because he's been overthrown and Hux wants to destroy him etc.

I think it's unnatural to route for the guy simply because he killed Han and is a giant crybaby. How are we supposed to like this guy? But really, he's Vader all over again. The Anakin in the prequels is a giant temper-tantrum crybaby too. So I guess they are going with the Skywalker men being giant babies. Even Luke has had his moments of whining.

Which is actually something we miss but makes the movies more believable/relatable. These characters emote like real people. Being a giant crybaby is just a natural thing that can happen at times.

And you know, Vader's redemption wasn't the most elaborate thing in the world either. So perhaps Kylo is never fully seen as a good person. But he's already had a big moment like Vader had: killing Snoke.

---

Snoke:
So my biggest question is around Snoke. He just gets killed like that. And this is perhaps the first time there isn't some almighty deity/Sith/Emperor on the throne. We're supposed to believe this crybaby Kylo is the new Supreme Leader. It doesn't sit well with me. I feel like Snoke SHOULD come back, but that also doesn't make sense. We've seen big villains perish many times over already. Will it be revealed that Snoke was a puppet of some other? Or perhaps part of a larger secret organization? Where did Snoke even come from? Did they kill him off because he was a bad character?

We don't know shit about him, and now he's dead. Does his Force Ghost come wreak havoc, or can he resurrect himself ? We just saw Yoda effect the real world, so who knows? Maybe we get a battle of Force Ghosts... there are starting to be quite a collection of characters.

This movie just made the mystery behind Snoke worse. He was the biggest question in Ep7 and we're still left wondering.

Poe/Finn/Rose/Phasma/etc:

Phasma wasn't a good character, glad she died. What was the point of her? Just to have a Female Stormtrooper? She didn't do shit. Literally zero reasons for her character to exist the way it did. I wasn't routing for her character to be fleshed out, there was nothing interesting to flesh out. I mean sure... we could speculate how she became who she was, and what her origins are, but the character design was uninteresting and her actions were boring. Good riddance.

Finn/Rose love story is whatever, sure, out of place, forced, etc. I also got a "Titanic" feel when he said "How could you do that Rose?!". But do we expect these 2 to be a major story? They are supporting cast, they help out, they are "main characters" for merchandising and shit, but the story isn't really about them.

I actually like the fact that their plans FAILED. Goes to show that maybe these people aren't always "right" all the time. It shows that not everyone can be a Hero. As much as this movie was for the little guy... the nobody... it also shows that people fail... and fail often.

Some elaborate plan to turn off the tracking device, sounds great! Do it! And we just expect it to be the right move and be successful. I'm so happy that for once we get a major failure in this department. Just drives it home more that these characters wield zero influence. Even the suicide mission to blow up the cannon was completely wrong, as we find out. We're being told these characters are meaningless, and we're shown it. All of their actions lead to a net 0 gain.

Same with Poe, he failed at everything and it was finally the Skywalkers that saved the day... from another Skywalker. And the fact this story is so Skywalker-centric really continues to make me doubt Rey's a "nobody".

---

Casino was whatever, I didn't mind it. It gave us another locale to look at, which was kinda needed imo, since the rest of the story was literally just 2-3 locations (Space/Island/Mineral Planet). The story was kept small and intimate, so experiencing some "life" on another planet made it "feel" more Star-Warsy.

Hacker guy is meaningless.

I mean, you people can bitch and moan about little shit like this all day, but Star Wars is full of random ass characters that do their own thing, and usually there is a reason given for most actions, but it sure is refreshing to finally have a movie that's light with some humor, but can show so many main characters failing at everything, and not every action being meaningful.

It was just great. Refreshing, sad, great visuals, new taste of the same formula, etc etc.
Haters.

After sleeping on it I am still disappointed. Sorry @Qhue but this movie is NOTHING like ESB other than it is as different when compared to TFA as ESB is to ANH. That is where the similarities begin and end, and yes I was alive when ESB came out and remember seeing it at the Chinese Man Theater.

I did think to myself during the movie, will my kids like this? The answer is yes, they will love it and that alone is helping me feel a little better. I am hopeful that when I take my kids I will be able to enjoy it more as I will see the joy they get from it. I guess I just need to come to grips that this film was not made for me, the life long Star Wars Fan, it was made for my kids and that makes me happy and sad at the same time.

Regarding Rey's Parents: It still does not sit well with me and I think Kylo lied because if he told her the truth there is no way she would ever join him.

Just saw it, think I enjoyed it less than TFA and I'm in no hurry to watch TFA again. Yet again it felt like a rehash of the original films

The First Order feel more like kids playing at being bad guys than actual bad guys - they should call the ginger General Cuck instead of Hux or whatever his name is

The Leia moment is possibly worse than anything in the prequels (although admittedly I try my best to forget they ever existed)

The constant power creep of the First Order hardware is dumb

Snoke death was cheap and no explaination of who he is or demonstration of his true power level. His throne room was cool I guess

This post is a good summary of the issues

For me this movie was better than The Force Awakens but still not as good as any of the original three movies, even RotJ with ewoks. I liked it better than TFA because at least it's not a complete rehash of one of the previous movies like TFA was of A New Hope.

There are some really excellent scenes in this movie but they are brought down by some really horrible scenes and plot lines. I'm lucky enough to have lived during the original trilogies release and have those found memories to look back on. People want to recapture that but but it's impossible, especially with the way movie houses are today. You're never going to get movies made the same way anymore. It's no longer about making good art and people paying to see it because it's good art. It's about making something you know people will pay money to see even if it isn't that good.

you should really use spoiler tags to hide that stuff for non viewers or mods declare this thread a spoiler heavy zone in title. use [ spoiler ] before the spoiler section and [ / spoiler ] after, without the spaces
k whatever, spoilered, thought I saw people not using tags above

I'm 99% sure we're going to see more of the "balance" come into play in the final film of the trilogy - dare I say Rey + Kylo being willing partners in the longrun with a proper "impassioned/unimpassioned" (like Sith/Jedi - just minus the religious mumbo jumbo)Force leadership of the two of them to finally bring true balance to the Force once Kylo get chilled out, which seems inevitable - he's passionate and prone to spazzing out impulsively, but not truly dark - both restablishing the Galactic Republic together with differing views, but working towards compromise/balance in all things... It's quite possible I'm completely wrong, but that's how I "feel" the breadcrumbs leading...

Why would people click on this thread and not expect spoilers at this point? That's just dumb.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect MOST people to spoiler for a week or so at least. (a la GoT thread)

Not that I'd critique those that slip either, however. (But I'm biased having already seen it minus first minutes)
