The entire reason the Jedi had no clue what was going (their perception was clouded) on is their headquarters was built on a sith temple. It's canon. For reals. If they couldn't detect palpatine in the neighborhood why would they have any idea about someone on the other side of the Galaxy, or outside it? My opinion is the whole reason there's all these new aliens in TFA and no Rodians/Ithorians/Hutts Etc is they were subtley trying to make a point of how vast the Galaxy is.

The entirety of TFA takes place in the Western part of the Galaxy. The previous films have been focused in the South, East, and the Core.

Says previous films in S, E and center. Endor and Bespin in 'Western Reaches'. Can't explain that!

Also, didn't the Queen's shiny Nabooian cruiser POS break down so they had to land at Tatoonie for repairs? Weren't they trying to get to Coruscant? So they went the ENTIRELY OPPOSITE DIRECTION?

Seems like it makes sense to head NE/east and connect up with the Corellian Run pipeline, then head in to the Core Worlds that way.

Actually...

'Western Reaches' is simply a colloquial regional name given to the area before the previously uncharted regions of the western Galaxy... Like the American Western Frontier. Endor is not in the Western part of the Galaxy... South Western at best.

But ya that Naboo -> Tatooine stuff makes no sense.

Pretty standard terminology actually. While not 2 dimensional, galaxies are certainly flat enough to use cardinal directions to describe them.

Don't disturb the nerds. They only need 2 coordinates in space time to find things. They've played Kerbel!

Well first you pick a direction. Then you call it north. Now you have the galactic north.
Okay, we can stop here and accept per usual that Star Wars is not Sci Fi or I can bother to explain why picking an arbitrary point on the rim of a spinning disc and calling it North is a nonsensical action for a space faring civilization.

lolwut? Star Wars is not the only galactic setting that uses cardinal directions. And it's not like you actually navigate via those cardinal directions, they're just for orientation on a galactic map. So you can say 'oh its over on the west side of the galaxy' instead of saying 'its at galactic coordinates xyz, pdq'.

Ok fuck it.

So you have your North and you make your other directions based of it. South is easy, it's away from North. East-West is perpendicular in direction. You end up with a map like this:

Do you see why this isn't very practical for any civ to establish for navigation? Furthermore, where are the "Western Reaches"?

"But The Ancient," you say, "That's not how they do it. They pick 4 points and make quadrants!"

Okay, let's say I want to travel from planet A to planet B. What direction am I heading, what are my reference points? Well if I use my North Pole and head South then I'll get there easy, so planet A must be South. But if I head South using my South reference point I end up heading in the complete wrong direction. Or I could just head due East towards my Eastern reference point and get there as well so it must be to the East. WHO CAME UP WITH THIS GARBAGE MAPPING SYSTEM. EWOKS?

Edit:

You clearly state it's not for navigation so I must not have read your post. THANKS FOR WASTING MY TIME.

I've been so profoundly smart that it appears dumb to your feeble brain. There really wasn't anything wrong with my post Ambi, besides the fact it was a waste of time. If you are navigating a galaxy traditional cardinal directions are worthless.
Guys a compass won't work in outer space.
