Honestly I think OGN would have found a sustainable spot catering to the niche BW market. I would have ridden that wave until it completely died out than try and hop on SC2 late.

Well, their prime time is limited compared to twitch, Blizzard isn't supporting it anymore and sponsors weren't going to foot the whole bill. I'm actually surprised TV is still so important in korea, I mean OGN switched to HD only a year or 2 ago. With their internet infrastructure you would think streaming would run over other forms of broadcast. Innovation joining Acer just got Slashered btw. I even watch an odd BW game here and there on youtube when I'm bored, which doesn't happen with any other game.

It is far easier to just turn on your TV and go to a pre-defined channel than it is to get it on your computer. Last I heard SC2 is only shown once a week in Korea and I think LoL is every night. Not like SC2 was ever popular in Korea.

Fuck twitch for killing 480p, best resolution for laggy servers where you can still see what is going on.

I wonder if real game designers are pissed that Day9 literally has zero experience in game design but since a bunch of worthless retards on the internet watch him play games all day he gets a job as a design lead.

I think in practice he will be more of a guy like " this is fun, this is not fun" instead of program/design anything, some kind of special advisor ? For those who know a bit of FGC a Seth Killian guy for SF4, just my thought.

I guess but he has no qualifications for that. I know he said in the VLOG about it he got an Masters from USC in game design or something but I think everyone sees the transparanecy of this as a simple publicity stunt by hiring on an e-celebrity. I don't know what exactly makes him an authority on game design or anything just because he plays them and has a huge online fanbase. Hell you can look at Green Monster Games as a perfect control for why you should value community input but never let them guide your decisions. Just because a group of people play video games doesn't mean they know anything about them.

Well being likeable toward a certain audience that interest you doesn't need any qualification if that's all they want.

With all his starcaft past among other things I guess he have some knowledge in RTS.

They should hire some overpaid asshole in a suit who couldn't tell a NES from a PS4 and who thinks the wiimote is a TV remote with confusingly few buttons. Because - experience. And possibly a degree or two from a pay to win university.

What is experience in game design anyways? Having played hundreds of video games counts as experience in my book. You see designers with lots of experience throw out huge turds with straight no fun components every year.

Um, experience is exactly what I said it is. Having a job in the gaming industry, proving your worth and eventually getting a game design lead position. Your post highlights the online gaming community and their self importance thinking they actually know what they want and how things work. Just go to the Diablo 3 thread on this very forum if you want a tale of idiot armchair designers vomiting one stupid idea after another. Consuming a product and producing a product are two different things. I eat three times a day but I can't cook to save my life. I'm also very unqualified to be a food critic simply because of my vast amount of eating I do in a given year. This move is very much akin to hiring a famous film critic to produce & direct a major film simply because they give their opinons on them all the time.

I'm willing to give Day9 the benefit of the doubt, mostly because he was able to turn himself into rather solid brand through hard work and dedication and he seems to be able to dissect the design decisions pretty well.

I like Day9, from what little I know of him.

Serious question, did Alex/Furor have any game design experience before working for Bliz?

Once upon a time a little StarCraft player known as Tom 'Zileas' Caldwell won the BW beta championship. With zero game development experience and a comp sci degree, quickly worked on as lead designer to a RTS nobody now has heard of. Eventually got hired by Blizzard as balance lead for WC3:tft, and is now design director for LoL.

So yeah, there's precedent for day[9].

According to dude's wiki he was hired on at Blizzard as the TFT balance lead, then worked on the WoW talent system, got his MBA, worked for Riot as lead game design. In other words he worked his way up in the system.

Man, that's a name I haven't heard in a long ass time. I remember the very first vanilla Starcraft ladder tournament champion was Blacklizzy, and Zileas was the second, then Zileas won most of the BW until Grrrrrr came around. I had no idea Zileas actually got into the industry though, I just remember he was at MIT at the time. I don't know how I remember this shit from so long ago.

Strifeshadow is the game he made, along with a few other top pros at the time...
