Anyone know a good community resource of skill magazines? I hate missing these dumb things and also hate scouring the bases looking for them.

This game looks amazing if you actually went in with realistic expectations.

There's no reason to build another No Man's Sky. There is plenty of reason to build an actual traditional RPG IN SPACE with interesting scripted sequences and hand-crafted environments.

A few years from now when I finish BG3 and Sea of Stars, this game looks like it will be super fun.

Right, but 7 years after No Man's Sky, why can't it incorporate at least a little bit of it? Why is everyone fine settling for mediocrity?

Space seems like an afterthought in this game. It's just a backdrop for a reskinned experience you had over a decade ago.

I wanted a new epic game experience, not the same one I've already played 4 times.

Adding NMS-style stuff would technically be easier than actual crafted RPG elements. Just release a DLC focused on base building and planet variety, kind of like how FO4 had some of those DLCs focused primarily on stuff like building your own vault and making robots for your settlements.

Even if they plan on doing that, makes sense you focus on the core RPG stuff first, then release the replayability/sandbox content later

All it needed from nms is seamlessness, doesn't even have to be fully seamless

and they've taken steps backward with their UI/menus which is annoying

And bethesada is know for it's grand openings in games, just a mind blowing first hour or two. This is the opposite.

Yeah just opposite. It was "well just another rpg shooter in space" those first 2-4 hours(granted I didn't just jump into the story, instead went exploring on the first planet), but started really picking up, RPG wise, as I got into the MSQ, which lead to all the side quests, NPC factions etc.

But yes the UI isnt fun, had to get used to certain keys to hold to do things. Just has that look of "we'll put minimal people on that and someone will mod it later to make it better".

I never played NMS, so cant comment. As the loading stuff seems normal for me. Though slightly over used( why do I need a loading screen for a shop/simple building in the city). Loading a planet, jumping to starsystems , loading the city and sections of the city and large builings I expected. Some just didn't need it and would of been better to just load that with the base world.

Does seem like they went out of their way to try to limit VRAM usage. Old engine or covering all the 8GB cards that are still the most represented?. Maybe a console consideration? I dunno. Only reason I can think for not having higher textures or even an option to download them(that games are doing more it seems).

I think it's because Bethesda learned their lesson with algorithmically generated crap all the way back in Daggerfall.

I think you need to go look at what a non modded fallout 3 NPC looks like.

There is some resemblance, as you can tell it was all made in the same engine/developers. The eyes are the most giveaway for me. Their talking is what feels off to me, the mouth animations feel slightly out of sync with the voice. I try not to look at lips when they talk, gives me uncanny valley feeling. The no light in the mouth probably doesn't help, its just black , sometimes their teeth, sides of mouth, the back.

Fired this up today and all the lighting/shadows are broken and my character's settings (face, hair, etc) are different. Joy.

Tweaked some settings and think I got the shadows squared away, but the avatar change is lame.

Edit: nah, still fucked. Here is the default settings, ultra preset (look around the gun where it renders the pixelated shadow below the console, and there is a black area around every character like any light they give off is just fucked and not working. So strange, I didn't change anything and this all looked fine yesterday.

Edit: the fix for me after trying some things was to delete the shader cache:

You will found the cache on your local harddisk: user\*yourname*\AppData\Local\Starfield\
Delete file "Pipeline.cache" and start the game, it generates a new shader cache and for me it works.

Made these changes too from a different reddit post and game looks a little better.

Anisotropic Filtering - 16X Antialiasing Gamma Correction - OFF MFAA - ON Texture Filtering Anisotropic Sample Optimization - ON Trilinear Optimization - OFF

It seems a lot of people are comparing vanilla/just released Starfield to games that have been out for 5-10 years with extensive modding already done, DLC, etc., on top of having expectations that never really lined up with what they said. NMS was trash for years, Elite Dangerous is boring as hell after a little bit, X4 is great but completely different than this and too complex for most gamers (I could see some mods inspired by X4 though for sure). Unmodded Skyrim is terrible compared to a nicely modded Skyrim at this point, completely different games really. I just keep getting the sense that some people WANT to dislike Starfield, and they've been looking for all sorts of reasons to say its bad (and many haven't even played it themselves).

Faces are so much better its astounding. Go back and refresh yourself see what Skyrim faces looked like, much less Fallout 3.

Watch the Digital Foundry review; They talk about how the game never uses very much vram, even on ultra settings on cards like the 4090/7900 XT or XTX with 20GB or more of memory, as it seems optimized for lower memory cards. As they say, it seems ripe for Ultra high texture pack.

It really seems like they were working to avoid a Cyberpunk 2077 circumstance, with low/mid range performance issues, rather than swinging for the fences to make it work the best out of the gate on high end systems. It's obviously an XBOX Series X/S centric design, with PC surprising coming up short. The PC UI is so frustrating at times.; its my main complaint so far
-PC UI inconsistency. I am training myself to use it but its not intuitive and it didn't have to be this way for M/KB. This doesn't seem to be nearly the same issue on the Xbox; may just be a PC port thing but Press/hold for varying lengths of time TAB/E/R/F sucks. Just Spitballing but why not have a single BACK key and an EXIT, not a Press for one function/ Hold for both?
-No local maps
-loot issue as mentioned above: Bonus is when bodies will respawn loot a second time so you can loot them again.

They really should do the Skill tutorial bits (Persuasion/Lock pick/Steal/Stealth/Crafting All in the Lodge or by the time you get to the Lodge. Fuck doing them in multiple over hours of multiple missions. That should all be done by the time you get to the Lodge the FIRST Time, so it can be skippable for the next playthrough. Boarding a vessel run through should be done on the first Crimson fleet vessel you encounter when you leave Velkerta or whatever; or have the 2 ship encounter end with the 2nd ship not blowing up and you needing to board to find the location of the base. You shouldn't need Sarah to come with you on an extended tour, they should offer you a choice of companions on your next mission out of the Lodge and not make it a "Tour of the Settled Systems" or whatever the hell this is. Send the robot and let people on planet do the talking. I mean, I sorta get what they are going for but I don't really like her and her shadow teeth. They have characters like Barrett who's teeth look fine. An English accent does not require dark teeth, BGS.

Edit: Youtuber comment: "Sarah Morgan: Oh yeah big Emilia Clarke Vibes; Obviously this is was decided before GOT seasons 8" or something like. I mean, I love Emilia Clarke but pushing Sarah so hard so soon in this a bit much. I am not falling for the first course, show me my opinions before I decide.

Lmao - bethesda games really do let you go full RPG and at times, it's incredibly cool. Got to Neon, spent the next hours (all day to be fair) smuggling and running drugs, bought a shitty apartment next to my drug empire and am now setting up a base on a distant planet to keep my small burgeoning drug empire functioning while I'm off site robbing casino's. 20 hours in, there's a metric ton of shit to do all catering to different playstyles. Main story is pretty good, but I've completely shelved it for now focusing on extracting/ship thievery/hallucigenics etc.

Hmmm... caved and bought it yesterday, the $70 version. Maybe I should refund it and just go back to playing Grim Dawn while watching people play it...
