Search is borked.. and Google Fu is saying we don't have a thread for this one. So I'm creating this solely to document that I've always liked this series (more than any of it's spin offs) and that the wife and I just started a rewatch as she had never seen the earlier seasons. To which I had to borrow a ST:TNG meme to convey my empathy towards her...

I'd forgotten how rough that first season and a half or so was...

It wasn't that bad it was just a product of it's time. I much prefer the early show to the last few seasons story wise.

I loved the archeology/ancient mystery plot and IMO the show lost it's charm after it concluded that arc with Atlantis, and really lost it's way when it tried to reintroduce it with the Ori.

It's like Star Wars with their fucking lightsabers. They lose their cachet when there's 4 million of them and everyone has one. Once they started rapidly disassembling the remaining onion it kinda got tired.

Of course there's you know the fact that in those days you never knew if your show would make it next season, so it's understandable. Original SG1 best SG1.

Ya if I recall they weren't sure if they were going to get renewed after the finale with the Ancient base vs Anubis, so that was sort of setup as a possible series finale if needed.

It wasn't quite the same after Richard Dean Anderson left, although the character of Vala was a good addition IMO.

This was more my jam then any of the Star Treks. Yea first couple seasons were painful and near the end it wasnt always the best. But the OG 4 were so perfectly cast and evolved into thier roles so well its timeless to me. Always felt like they were worried about cancelation so they were always trying new things and having a fun overarching storyline. Plus the Goul'ud were always fun hammy characters but it still felt satisfying when they beat them at their own game.

I still wish Amazon would do something with this series. I know it wont be a continuation cause even Universe got amazing near the end, but I love the idea around it. Sci-Fi + Indiana Jones + A more positive view on things.

What a damn great series of shows.

Vala was improperly utilized, they could have played far more into the former host part of the character and gotten more from it. Frankly, the last couple seasons with the Ori was not the best direction to take the series in regardless of the cast changes.

My favorite sci Fi show and it isn't really even close. Distant second being deep space nine.

OG cast cant be beat, But I'm a huge sucker for the brand of dry humor rda excels at.

The filler episodes were usually pretty fucking good as well, like the black hole one or the never ending day one. God this show was fucking dope.

whole thing is on amazon along with atlantis and SGU and I assume the movies too if you don't have it on plex/etc. Its a big ask to rewatch though since its fucking 214 episodes for just the main show plus hundreds more for the spinoffs.

Highlander reboot is set to film starting in Jan with Henry Cavill and the director of John Wick doing it so if it does well maybe MGM will decide to reboot Stargate.

One story I liked from the producers is they mentioned the military actually let them film a few scenes at Cheyenne Mountain complex (those external shots were actual soldiers/from the actual complex). One of the officers in charge there had put a sign called Stargate Command on a storage closet door because the show was popular with the people serving there and people always asked to see Stargate Command when they visited the complex lol

Wife and I have been proud prime members since long before music and video was a thing there. Back when it was just to save us money on her book purchasing habit. heh Haven't decided to give them a bigger slice of my economic soul yet.

How very strange. I started a rewatch as well just a couple days ago.

Fantastic series. Especially seasons 1 to 5'ish. Great chemistry among the actors, fun and epic sci-fi, and never takes itself too seriously.

Set up a Plex server and get Usenet account. I download all that stuff and have zero ads and commercials.

I recent rewatched Atlantis and SGU, both held up pretty good. SGU is the kind of show that on first watch, you were like meh, but it actually was a pretty decent show. Started watching SG1 again but don't have enough time for the entire run.

SGU was awful IMO. They tried to make SG DS9/BSG and young adult fanfic. The whole thing was tonally the wrong direction. Atlantis was OK, but it definitely started the trend in that direction. There were darker elements and heavier themes in SG1, but there was always a bit more levity and grace.

It's the same thing that happened after TNG. The difference is the outlook of the world building generally. In TNG and SG1, it was generally dynamic and upbeat, you see that shift when the crisis happens in the episode. You want to live there during the best glimpses because it's a positive setting. In the later shows, everything became dark and depressing. All of a sudden the federation is corrupt and doing weird bullshit, the various entities in SG1 become fixtures of the settings (like Woolsey) and SGU is visually just not very interesting.

With today's CGI capability, I would love to see a good reboot of the show. Casting would be everything. There is so much to work with in material. Some of it could even be changed a bit to better reflect the universal races dynamic that got touched on. I always loved the more science fiction episodes. The strange worlds that had a different kind of life form or atmosphere.
