SGU was awful IMO. They tried to make SG DS9/BSG and young adult fanfic. The whole thing was tonally the wrong direction. Atlantis was OK, but it definitely started the trend in that direction. There were darker elements and heavier themes in SG1, but there was always a bit more levity and grace.

It's the same thing that happened after TNG. The difference is the outlook of the world building generally. In TNG and SG1, it was generally dynamic and upbeat, you see that shift when the crisis happens in the episode. You want to live there during the best glimpses because it's a positive setting. In the later shows, everything became dark and depressing. All of a sudden the federation is corrupt and doing weird bullshit, the various entities in SG1 become fixtures of the settings (like Woolsey) and SGU is visually just not very interesting.
I do think SGU tried too hard to be like battlestar galactica in tone. It certainly wasn't as light hearted as SG1. I wasn't a fan when it first aired but going back at watching it a decade or more later, its not bad

The best thing about Atlantis was Rodney. The villains, the Wraiths, were pretty generic. But, even still, I'd take that show ANY DAY over what we currently have today.

SGU got better in the 2nd season. The first season sucked, though

This is the correct take. By the time they were hibernating themselves I got mad knowing there would be no more. It finally found that serious but not to serious tone it needed to contrast against Atlantis which should have still been going (thanks MGM).

I really enjoyed it, I guess the one driving force was I enjoyed seeing the mysteries of the ship itself. I was kind of bummed out though will never know how everything goes. I like the actors and the characters or whatever, but you were absolutely right it was trying to be BSG, but in the Stargate universe.

Maybe that's why I like it. I still love the original series though. Used to watch it with my roommate in college all the time, he was a bigger fan than I ever was or would be.

So, we're around half way through season 1... just enjoying an episode or two a night.

And my wife has started to discover the eternal points that all SG-1 fans have to whistle as they walk past. (This is her first view for a lot of this).

"How is it our civilization advanced, but all these others that were taken to other planets didn't?"
"Why do most of them suddenly speak English? Vikings speaking English? Mongols speaking English?!?!?"

Didn't they get universal translator tech in the first episode or made for TV movie, whatever it was?

I think they handwaved it as the gates somehow translated languages. The advanced thing is because the Gou'ald would destroy advanced civilizations if discovered

Because wasting 10 minutes of every episode for Dr. Jackson to communicate is boring. Sort of like how 3 shots to disintegrate was a really bad mechanic. Because if you could shoot staff blasts through why couldn't they simply erase the iris?

the first season had 1 or 2 planets they visited where daniel had to learn the language. it took 5-10 minutes and really just slowed the episodes down tremendously. after that everyone just spoke english. A big chunk of the movie as well was Daniel learning how to talk to the people of Ra in their language based on ancient Egyptian.

much, much later in the show they encounter an alien race who asks why everyone speaks English and Daniel says "there's a really good reason for that" and is interrupted by an action sequence lol

One of my favorite episodes was the episode that had a show on earth that was real close to the SG1 project. One of my favorite moments was when somebody asked "Why can they go through walls but do not fall through the ground?"

Not only would you not fall through the earth but the earth would be rotating around you at 4 miles per second, while moving through space at 18.5 miles a second. Essentially you would suddenly be floating in space.

But yeah, science fiction.....

The self-aware stuff was always funny. Like they visited a planet and wondered why all these planets look like the Pacific Northwest

IT was all comical if you look at it from a realist point of view. For one, like all the fucking alien planets they visited, all of them spoke English. I just re-watched this recently and I cant think of any that they visited that they did not speak English. IT was good until Mcgyver left SG1, then it all went to shit IMO.

I liked Atlantis better. The premise of the show was cool, the bad guys were cooler, and the main cast was really good too.

I need to rewatch this show. Been 20+ years now lol. And yeah, they totally hit the jackpot with the cast, including the balding commander they lifted straight from Twin Peaks.

For me, shows like this and other 90s shows such as TNG, DS9, B5... they all have the same "magic". Just enough tech and rudimentary CGI to make things believable, but still firmly rooted in the physical props and setting age. Writing is a bit liberal at times, but still mostly grounded in reality. And they also usually don't take themselves too seriously (this one being the top for that), with some good tounge in cheek humour. I never minded that most aliens looked like humans with slightly larger heads and spoke English. It was a "simplification" that I have never minded, just as how I like to hear "pew pew" sounds when I see lasers in space. My rational mind knows that that is not how it works, but I'm not watching it to entertain my rational mind. I'm watching it to have some good times, and that they deliver.

I love SG1 & SG:A. It is on my constant rotation as something to fall asleep to or just background noise while cooking. I've rewatched both shows multiple times.

Could never get into SGU though. I remember the 2nd season being much better, and being bummed that it didn't continue. But to get to the point where I actually start to enjoy it is very tedious.

This thread gave me the itch to fire it up again. The first thing I noticed was how much I had missed imagining all the different ways I would stick my Ma'Tok Staff into Amanda Tapping's Stargate. Yummy!

if only there was a category for that

moms you'd want to take out for coffee
XX breeders who you want to see naked
ovarian people who make peepee go boing-boing

well i'm sure someone will come up with a name for it
