Having played both DD and OMD 1/2 pretty excessively, I think they're hard to compare. They're both tower defense games, but DD has more of an emphasis on the RPG elements with getting loot and building your characters, whereas OMD has more emphasis on trap strategy and combat. They each have unique approaches to tower defense, both of which I found to be really enjoyable.
Though, I will say you will get more bang for your buck with DD. The game has a ton more content (particularly if you get the DLC pack) and a lot more replayability due to the loot treadmill and character advancement. I've played through every level in both OMDs and gotten 5 skulls on just about every level on every difficulty, but I've found once you figure out how to master a level, there isn't much reason to replay them. Even in OMD2, I never really felt pressed to earn more skulls since I could just respec to what I needed for a particular level whenever I wanted.

That tends to be where the depth in DD comes in, since you can switch characters between rounds. Once you get higher and do harder difficulties, it becomes essential to have more than one character's towers out. On the harder tasks and Nightmare difficulty (and possibly even Insane), it is nearly impossible to beat a level with just one character's towers. Later in the game, the progression becomes more about having a balanced set of heroes for both towers and combat.DD looks like it has more depth, but that depth is deceptively shallow. Since you're playing one class primarily, you use the same towers the same way nearly every level.
