This really is why they should have included a d-pad. Then the game could work the same as other controllers if it wasn't supported and yet still support other functionality.
It depends entirely on the haptic feedback. If it's good, you won't care about the lack of d-pad. If it's bad, then yeah, it'll be a problem.

lack of a Dpad is a complete non-factor. I've been using a 360 controller for gaming on my PC for years now and I've only ever used the Dpad to navigate menus. Nobody(seriously) plays fighting games on a PC, and if they do(Mugen or whatever) they have a stick. I know we had this exact same argument in some other thread. Dpads are completely unnecessary in this day and age if your analog controls are done well. They're only relevant for fighting games, and those people use arcade sticks anyways.

I remember people bitching about the WiiU Gamepad saying nothing that big could be comfortable to hold and it ended up being a very comfortable controller to use. Bitching about the Steam controller without ever using it is absurd. Complaining about it is the reason we are stuck with inferior FPS controllers on consoles. The dual analog stick paradigm needs to die and I hope Valve has gotten it right.

Its umm, different! Like others have said, valve has a good track record with just about everything. It's definitely going to be something you have to try... Cant wait for more impressions.

There's no way the company headed by Gabe, massive man mountain, is going to make a controller that isn't going to be comfy as fuck.

Look at Gabe. Does he look like a man who tolerates being uncomfortable at any time?

It's why we can't have nice things.

While it looks silly, most paradigm crushing inventions are startling before they are accepted into the norms of the masses.

Yeah I have some serious reservations too about this new controller. Especially the no analog-sticks. Mostly because I've never experienced a haptic-feedback device that was worth a shit so I'm skeptical. Still I will totally reserve final judgement until I've used it myself.

But everything else Valve is doing I think is awesome. Its about time Linux for example gets their shit together on some of the necessary subsystems which Valve is addressing such as the graphics and input layers. Open source is awesome, I'm a fan, but its also a clusterfuck of fuck-allness when it comes to shit like this. Valve stepping in and putting their weight into PC gaming on Linux is great and just what was needed. I'm also curious which display server Valve is investing in with SteamOS.

Now if Adobe ports their shit to Linux some day, I can finally say goodbye to Windows. Unfortunately not likely to happen

or maybe those sticks could be coded to function like a dpad - and only take the cardinal directions specifically as inputs

When playing games with a standard controller, does being left handed matter? Or to lefties just adapt?
It doesn't matter at all.

Controller is weird, but it's the first new design we've gotten since... waving around a remote. Do not want to play DMC style games or rpg's on it.

I really like the idea of a new controller, the whole Linux thing is good as well. The most important thing is you absolutely do not have to use any of the shit if you don't want to.
