Subscriber early access to Galactic Starfighter today. So much fun. Highlight of the day was being pursued and near death when I went into the interior shell of a Star Destroyer that was under construction. My opponent couldn't keep his ship under control so he crashed.

You can access this starting at level 1. It provides exp and credits but it's advancement is separate from the normal game. I wrote a quick overview above. So far my favorite ships are the strike fighters. They're equivalent to the X-wings or Tie Interceptors.

Haha I just flew a mission. No idea what I was doing. Too many red dots on the radar thing and no way to mouse over the 1-4 abilities to see what they do so I just sorta flew around and randomly shot at people. Some people had missiles but if I did I couldn't figure them out.

Short tutorial (they have one of these, it's the question mark in the hangar window):

W and S are throttle. W goes faster, S goes slower. Pressing nothing is your default speed.

X brings you to a full stop.

A and D roll you left or right respectively.

Movement via pitch and yaw is accomplished via mouse. You pitch faster than you yaw. Turning is faster while moving slower.

Spacebar is your afterburners/speed boost. Very useful for getaways and at the start of the match.

F1, F2, F3, and F4 are power level adjusters. Blaster, Shield, Engine, and balanced respectively.

Tab cycles targets as expected. R targets the last person to fire at you. E targets the person under your reticle.

When targeting a couple of things to note. Your target reticle will be greyed out if the person you've targeted is out of range. The target box will be red when missiles are in range and the circle will be red when lasers are in range. You fire missiles by holding down the right mouse button. I believe scout ship missiles are instant fire but strike fighter missiles require you to lock on before they'll fire. Standard lock on time is 3 seconds. There's an audio cue when a lock on is established.

You can hold Z to unlock the mouse button while in a mission.

How long are they going to use paying customers to beta test this thing before they let the rest of us freeloaders in?

It is available now and it is pretty fun. Million times better than the rail.

Preferred access is next month. "Release" is in February. No restrictions on use if you're straight up F2P but your experience gain for the ships is reduced.

While its fun, its also a bit of a let down so far. I dont know if its because Im retarded and cant find the settings or if they dont exist but my list so far is;

I would like to be able to zoom out from the ship since their "3rd person" view is hidious (flying near rocks, beams and other shit while having a camera that is locked 3 meters behind your ship is pure suck). Either do it first person or make us able to zoom in and out as we need to.

Why cant we finetune our power levels? the "all engine!" "all weapon!" "all shield!" is a bit retarded, flying a gunship I want a ton of shields and weapon power but cant care less about engines... as a scout I dont give a damn about shields, speed plix!.

The missile lock times are about 3 hours too long. While I realise that its needed to not turn the game into a giant rocket-fest, it needs to be cut down to half from the current time to be of any use in a furball fight.

The crew options are intresting, but some of the "skills" they bring seems out of sync with their backstory and purpose.

While its an early take on it, I sorta like what I see and hope they develop this some more (and, again!, into some PVE content). Having a "raid" with this system would be great fun, hell even group content would be lovely.

I got like 4 different full sets of pilot suits and 2 new titles from being a subscriber.

I literally have zero space to put these. I grinded out the imperial suit a long time ago and that shit took me forever doing the rail space system. Now they hand it out for free.

I played the space thing once before I went to bed. It seemed like fun but I had zero idea what I was doing. I'll probably look at it again tomorrow.

The way I look at it is all my characters have a full suit of adaptive armor at level 1 now.

I can never get back into my main character, Friday. He's a gay Sith Juggernaut now. I got onto Makeb and played around with the different dialogue choices in the quests there and accidentally went down the gay path.

After I made out with another man I can never look at my character the same. He's a light sided gay sith juggernaut. His story is ruined in my eyes.

Every time I log onto him this pops in my head

Bad news for you, bro, but there's no accidentally becoming gay.

Yes. I believe the most egregious one was Project and that one was fixed ages ago. The animation now has the object pop up right next to the target and the damage is immediately applied. Most arguments these days about classes revolves around the ever elusive "balance". There's still work that needs to be done on that end but they're making a nominal effort at addressing player concerns.

I fired up SWTOR to try out Galactic Starfighter a couple of days ago and I have to give bioware props for that one. It's almost a whole new game they've patched in in a free content patch. Complex, fun to play and robust.
