Was wanting the tablet for a cruise at the beginning of July. Oh well, I will just buy a cheap Kindle ink or paperwhite for the trip and invest in a tablet latter. Thanks for the advice bros.

Get the Paperwhite. If you don't, eventually you'll want to read where it is dark and regret it terribly.

Have 2nd gen Nexus 7, and smartphones, but still haven't found something comfortable for reading for me. Considering a Paperwhite, as it looks pretty BA for reading. It's cheap, and it has 30 day money back guarantee. Might as well try it.

Do you not like night mode through a nook/kindle app? Makes your book look like this website, black/grey background with white lettering. Very easy on the eyes.

Once you start reading on a Paperwhite, you'll never read on a tablet again. It is just too amazing.

It really varies from person to person, some folks have no problem reading a normal tablet screen for hours, some no problem with night mode, and some get eyestrain from both. e-ink is certainly easiest on the eyes, but for some people it's just not necessary. Though I love it and just prefer the look.

I have convinced like 10 people to get PWs at this point, not a single one regrets the decision, they are just great devices for anyone who reads alot of books.

For me I read alot of PDFs on my surface because they display better on that than on PW and most academic papers are PDF but for anything like a book PW is just better, even if you don't get eyestrain its just more enjoyable to read that smooth eink imo. If I wasn't a gamer I would prolly have consolidated down to just a surface, paperwhite and phone at this point.

It is easy on the eyes but it's not really in the same league as e-ink. I have an old-as-shit Sony e-reader that I use for anything that's actually a book. I do play around on my phone in night mode but if I'm doing any serious reading, e-ink is just better.

That's my problem is I don't do any serious reading, and keep thinking a new device will make me "more" interested. I sound like a derpderp ... reading is stoopid! lol... but just never been a hobby, at least since graduating highschool that I got into.

Gave it a more serious go recently and tried it on a original Surface RT. Way too heavy to use in bed comfortably. Tried it on a Nexus 7. Much better, but still not comfortable. About to try it on my iPhone, and see if that fits the mold, and then beyond that might try out a paper white.

There's all sorts of book series I want to read, but just been really difficult to get into any of them. I keep blaming the device but in reality it just may be me.

Maybe just try to find one of those really cut rate nook touches with eink or something then. If 6 months from now you realize that you used it a fair amount then get a Paperwhite 3 cause it should be out by then, you will be out the $30 or whatever nook simple touch is these days but you won't have wasted 4x that on a device you won't use if it turns out you just don't like reading that much. Or if the PW price tag isn't enough to make you blink just get that. Sucks to be caught in that fat guy treadmill shopping situation tho lol, I have so many gadgets sitting around from those kind of purchases.

This. I love my tablet and I use it for everything nowadays except for intensive gaming, but I still cannot stand reading books on it. It's not a matter of my eyes, or comfort, because I'll happily lay in bed for hours reading forums and other stuff on the internet. However, nothing beats the feeling of having a book in my hand, and I get tons of enjoyment out of ordering/buying a book and putting it on my bookshelf.

I am looking for a tablet to surf the internet, watch movies and tv, and read books. I don't really care about any kind of advanced game or word processing. Also, I do not own a single apple product. Is the Kindle Fire HDX the way to go?
That's pretty much the same for me. In fact, I'm going on a cruise in August and that's when I want to get it by.

I don't read books (last books I read was the ASoIAF series), so mostly just surfing the internet and movies/tv. I'm thinking something in the $250 or under price range. Never owned a tablet before so I'm fucking lost. When do the new Nexus 7's come out? The 2013 version would probably be good for me, but I don't want to buy it like a month before the new ones come out and they have a $100 price drop or some shit.

Nexus 7 is a fantastic tablet, and it's stock Android, so you don't get any bloat on it like you would with a Samsung tablet or something. No idea on when the new versions are coming though, so just as you said, might be best to wait and see what happens.

As an update, I loaded up the Kindle app on my iPhone, and have had great success reading there. Something about having my phone everywhere has made it really convenient. 10 minutes before a movie started yesterday, I took it out and read a few pages. So now I'm thinking more than ever I need to get a phablet phone! hehe
