That tablet is pretty...meh. It'll be slow. Its likely fine for web browsing and book reading, but don't plan on downloading too many high-end games, that thing will be pretty slow trying to do anything graphic-intensive. I've never heard of that site, but the fact that there is no mention of a manufacturer for that tablet isn't a good thing.

Half a gig of ram is the real kicker there, I haven't seen any halfway decent tablets with less than 1GB of RAM in a couple years now. My Nexus 7 from 2012 has 1 GB, and its even starting to get a little long in the tooth nowadays. The battery is pretty small for a 7" tablet, much less a 9", and I see no mention of screen resolution(also a bad sign)

half a gig of ram makes PDFs questionable. Tablets have a hell of a time with those honestly. My tablet has better specs and can't handle some of my D&D books

I got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 Pro for free a few days ago and this thing is pretty badass. It's fast, screen is beautiful and it's super light.

dont buy the knockoff chinese tablets they are utter shit quality and the components start breaking down a few months in, like battery charge only lasts 5 minutes plugs dont work etc

ipad mini is $199 at target this week but i think a google nexus is better

Well if he's using it for his nerd reference guides 7" is on the small end. Folks usually suggest a 10" for those.

And for your moms. There no one else has to say it.

If you're just buying a tablet for basic reading / videos /browsing etc. and want something cheap, it's hard to beat that Kindle Fire HD deal for $110.

I don't have an issue with the fire per say but I really want android so its like my phone when it comes to contacts, apps, etc. Perhaps I am over thinking it but whatever. If I could jailbreak it and put android on it, I would.

Well, Kindles are Android, but they have SO much proprietary crap built in, and restrictions on using google services(including the play store) that it's about as far as you can possibly get from stock, vanilla Android, while still technically being Android.

if you've never tablet'd before or don't have the latest and greatest android phone then fire is perfectly fine. its just that once you go to a nexus tablet or use the latest android on a daily basis, then going back to kindle is really tough

one nice thing about kindle fire is that you get a shitload of amazon deals with it, like recently a 240gb SSD for like $40 (retail $200), a nice coffee maker for $20 ($149), etc. its a short window and only for amazon kindle fire hd users but if you get one its a good score

while we are talking about amazon deals, I am sure most of you know- but as its one of the easy side load options for android apps on my blackberry- the amazon store is a great download- there is some free app (usually a game, sometimes productivity app) almost every day- you can get a decent little collection of free apps just by checking on it.

Well, the Nexus 8 was absent from Google I/O.

I'm still looking for a tablet in the <$225 range. The Nexus 7 really fits the bill, but I've just readsomany complaints about how they're broken pieces of shit. They're the best you can get when they work, but it's a crapshoot when it decides to fail.

Is there anything else out there worth a shit?

I've had my Nexus 7 (2013) since when I posted it in this thread (black friday?) and I love that little piece of awesome. My only complaint is it's a little awkward to type on. Haven't seen it fail in any way, shape or form..

Google I/O is a lot more about software than hardware. They also didn't mention Google Glass hardly at all (if at all now that I think about/read more about it), so just because their was no Nexus 8 mention doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Just an update.. our Nexus 7 is great, however my mother-in-law handed me hers last night. She bought it the same night as us. It bricked for absolutely no reason at all. Trying everything I can find online as far as solutions but it looks dead right now.

I'm pretty much settled on a Nexus 7 at this point. Now I'm just waiting for another sale to get posted on Slickdeals. I literally missed the last one I was going to buy by like 25 minutes.
