They had confirmed non-frozen water on Mars previously, but nothing of any permanence (just melt water/small flows that dried up). This is the first evidence of a "permanent" liquid water feature on the surface (although insulated by ice).

We had clear skies and heat wave all week long, and we'll have clear skies and more heat wave all weekend. There's only a single rain front passing thru for, like 6-8 hours in between.

My take on it is that he just continued talking about why we didnt go back. He does say "the reason we didnt go," just left out the "back."
