I don't know about the 3DS but the DS was a dream to develop on. It basically gave you a contract of "You have this many polys on screen you'll get this many FPS." It left all the guess work out of the job. There wasn't stuff to tweak it was just heads down getting your game design in the code. Again don't know about if they have the same stuff for 3DS but each game I've played ran quite smooth.
Plus add in the fact that no one expects to be blown away with the graphics so you can get by with less. As long as the game has good gameplay and doesn't look like dogshit people will still like it.

I think there are plenty of people out there that want bleeding edge graphics in their games. Just look at the HD version of Tomb Raider that's coming out. But you are right that being a 3DS, people let graphics slide, but I think that also let's the dev's focus more on gameplay. At least I would hope it goes that way.

Ya, I meant specifically on the 3ds.

I feel it just proves that graphics don't make a great game, but I have plenty of friends that won't play a game unless it looks great. Doesn't have crazy good graphics, and they say this sucks.

i finished the bravely default demo using some of the dumber "cheats" (4 black mage with red2 + ninja3 + performer4 lets you kill any boss, do the little exit w/o save to get 20 villagers) and don't plan on buying the game until it is on a 50% off sale. I really, really, really enjoyed Might and Magic X Legacy on PC but didn't really find the same fun in BD. Leveling jobs is super, super grindy and its a bit annoying having to set monsters to -100% and run to town to rest, why isn't there a campfire consumable or anything
frown.png
the whole monster spawn rate setting seems a bit wonky and crude.

I think i'd enjoy the game a lot more on PC, I like playing the 3ds xl for short 20-40 minute game bursts but don't really feel like playing a handheld any longer, and this kind of RPG seems like it would be a lot more fun with long gaming sessions. maybe its just me who doesn't like long sessions on handheld tho.

I think that's the beauty of a hand held though, and the game doesn't hurt you for playing in short bursts. I suppose if you are trying to get back to town, and keep running into mobs, that might hurt, but I found it to be part of the challenge.

I think I like this game, and any other FF that has it, so much because I never knew about that 4 black mage trick but I don't have to go restart the game to do it if I don't want too. Compared to M&MX:L, where what you pick is set, flexibility this game provides is great. I realize though this is just a normal part of FF games, but new to me since I've never really played them before and a feature I really appreciate.

I'm probably one of the biggest graphics whores around, but I can still accept the difference between a AAA game that fills a blu-ray with 1080p cutscenes and, say, a downloadable game that uses old school game mechanics and was initially designed for handhelds.

I think the biggest problem with getting the games moved from handheld to console comes down to money. And I don't mean the cost of re-doing the artwork, since an awful lot of that is already done at high[er] resolution and then downsampled for mobile screens, so really all that's lacking is the number of polygons in the models when the game uses a 3d engine. No, I'm talking about the fact that 3DS games are vastly overpriced compared to their budgets, when you consider the same price vs. budget of console/PC games. Nobody would pay $40-50 for those games on a home system--and frankly I have no idea why anyone finds it acceptable on a handheld either--and having to mark them down to a more appropriate $20-25 would enrage the bean-counters and cannibalize the handheld market just about everywhere except Japan.

Being worth the price is all about how many hours I can get out of a title.

The handheld games I've bought recently (Fire Emblem Awakening, SMT 4, Persona 4 Golden, Pokemon, Etrian Odyssey, Rune Factory 4, etc etc) have ALL gotten me at least 40 hours, some 100+ - there is no console game I've bought outside of Monster Hunter 3 on Wii U that has come anywhere close to that value.

Most AAA titles these days are 10 hour movies with no replay-ability, the definition of a waste of money. It seems like a game's budget gets sucked up quick by AAA graphics and 1080p cutscenes, and they don't have the money to actually make interesting gameplay or mechanics.

Give me 3DS graphics with 60+ hours of gameplay for $50 over a 10 hour movie like the Last of Us that I could have just watched on YouTube and got the same enjoyment.

I hate when people use play time as the deciding factor for game quality. Sure, The Last of Us can be beaten in 10-15 hours, but every one of those hours is excellent. I probably put 30 or so hours into fire emblem it was repetitive as hell with a shitty story.

I just can't look at it that way, especially since I have GameFly for games like The Last of Us--though I could not possibly disagree more that watching it on YouTube would have been even remotely the same enjoyment. I'll pay $60 for Lightning Returns [grudgingly] next week, but I would never have given Atlus $50 at release for SMT4 even if I owned a 3DS. Even Bravely Default at $40 would irritate me, because I know damn well S-E didn't give it 2/3 of the budget of Lightning Returns and yet that's the price point it's at. The length is irrelevant to me (and in this example, I'm pretty sure LR is a longer game than BD anyway).

Anyone know how the travel/overworld/etc is handled in Lightning Returns? I'm wondering if it's that gay timeline bullshit or just straight on rails.

Best way I can think to describe the world map is that it's like XII without the zone lines. There's no timeline because the whole game is a countdown of the final 13 days.

Current gamers do not buy like this, I do.. you can look at all the games through the years I have actually purchased and they are almost all long play RPGs with tons of replay...and castlevania :) Current games love paying money for the flash and the rush- its like drugs- the big hit and high sells.

Last of Us was a great story, but it was basically Uncharted gameplay wise with some Bioshock crafting thrown in.
