Good post. Though most of the people I've chatted with at the various brewery tours I've done were pretty savvy, or at least were interested in the beer. The people I find the most irritating are the ones that bring their toddlers and let them run wild. But in general, the crowds have really swelled to the point that tours aren't as fun as they used to be.I really don't get people who camp out for beer. It shows what a fucking fad beer has become and it needs to hurry up and die. I hate going to a brewery and having people who really couldn't give a shit if they just served Millers or Budweiser in there.
I used to not know what the old guys were talking about when they just bought 12 packs of Lagunitas IPA or Sierra Nevada. Now I totally do and it makes perfect sense. Those beers are the best bang for the buck and most hard to get seasonal shit isn't even as good. It's all so hyped now.
If I want a RIS I'll just buy Old Raspy because nothing else I find off the shelf will be as good 9 times out of 10. IPA? Well Jai Alai is easy as shit for me to find and Invasion is one of the best pale ales I know of. No point trying to find seasonal stuff or one offs anymore. Not worth the effort or time. Unless it's something seriously amazing or new I don't even bother anymore.
The only time I even try new stuff is when I show up to a bar and it's on draft.

This is it, for me. Even though I'm a bit of a beer weirdo according to the current trends (I don't really like IPAs) I can find really good beers very easily now.The great thing about the upswing in beer is how many high quality beers there are that are always available.
Try to get your hands on Oude Geueze Tilquin. It's expensive but great. For a cheaper but still good Flemish Red look for Ichtegem's grand cru. It's not the best Flemish red out there but it's very good and very cheap for the style (yes, $5.99 per bottle is cheap for sours)This is it, for me. Even though I'm a bit of a beer weirdo according to the current trends (I don't really like IPAs) I can find really good beers very easily now.
I just wish a good sour were easier to find. I tried a FANTASTIC one at Deschutes last summer but they're really hard to find.
There is a bit they don't distribute nationally for their beers, but I know most of Odell's lineup hits MN, and we're usually not a top-priority market because of shitty distribution laws and small population. You guys are right that most of the seasonal rare shit is not as good as people make it out to be, nor worth the trouble. However there are exceptions and those exceptions are what make me keep doing it.
Founder's KBS is a shining example of that (though you don't need to wait in lines for that)
When I did the Portsmouth Brewery Kate Day it was because Portsmouth Brewery does not distribute any of their beer. I won't ever do it again because, while the beer was good it wasn't worth that kind of hassle. However, when you go to a place like that that makes amazing beer and doesn't distribute (or only distributes in a very small radius around the brewery like Alchemist) you get to buy all their other, amazing beer as well. Plus Portsmouth NH is just an awesome little "city".
I want to get out to Odell someday for exactly that reason. From what I have been told by various people who's beer opinions I completely trust that might be the best brewery in the US, and from what I know they don't distribute very far.
That shit was good.... going to buy more tomorrow.^^^ Bourbon Barrel Quad is damn good stuff(assuming you like bourbon) Keep an eye out for Boulevard's Rye on Rye if you like the BBQ(not a coincidence that this KC beers initials are BBQ)
hope it doesn't get infected this time. Here is what Boulevard is using to age some of their beers for the next couple years: (posted this on their Facebook page this week)
Buffalo Trace Bourbon is pretty damn good stuff, can't wait to see what their barrels do to Boulevard's BBQ(and whatever else they might make with them)
Here here.I just wish a good sour were easier to find. I tried a FANTASTIC one at Deschutes last summer but they're really hard to find.
Duppinbro, you are in the Northwest, right? TheLogsdon Farmhouse Brewerymakes some sours. They had some pretty good stuff when I went to a sampling.I just wish a good sour were easier to find. I tried a FANTASTIC one at Deschutes last summer but they're really hard to find.
The World Market here had Oarsman for a couple of months. I think I single-handedly ran through most of their stock.About the most commonly found sour beer I've seen all over the place(at least here in the midwest) is Bell's Oarsman Ale. I don't particularly like it, but then again I don't like sour beers either.
