They have a surly kit (Ferocious?) that is really close, and they got the brewer at Surly to help out with the recipe. Or Maybe Midwest Supply has it. I'm not sure, they're both like 15 minutes from me so I can't remember who has what.

Brew some Pliny the Elder at home:
The Plinian Legacy Double IPA Kit : Northern Brewer

I wonder how close it actually gets to the real thing
I've actually heard it isn't very close, but that is okay, here is a recipe that is supposed to be spot on:Pliny The Elder Clone 3.0 | Bertus Brewery

I tried it but my beer ended up almost 10 points higher than the recipe calls for, ended up calling it Pliny Snow, Bastard of Pliny the Elder. Guess I get better efficiency than what he does, will adjust for next time. Only problem is I haven't had PTE so I can't attest to its accuracy other than what others have said. He also has a PTY clone that is suppose to virtually cloned. I will say that the hop schedule for the PTE clone was very tasty, but maybe just a little over-the-top for how little malt backbone there way imo. I plan on adopting it for a Cascadia Dark Ale here in the future as I think coupled with a little stronger malt profile it will be amazing.

My Bros. I bought a brewer's kit about 2 years ago that I have yet to use and am planning on doing so this weekend. I have a 5 gallon glass carboy, brewers bucket, siphon rod and everything you would expect from a starter kit. Are there any things they don't usually include that make life easier that I should pick up? The brewer's bucket I have doesn't have a spigot so I think I might swap that out for one that does. I will be kegging the beer as I have a kegorator and bottling seems like a hassle.

If you aren't bottling, don't bother with a bucket with a spigot, your siphon will work better for moving beer around from your different vessels. If it isn't an auto-siphon, I would recommend getting an auto-siphon but it isn't necessary. I am assuming when you say "brewers bucket" that it is set up to be a primary fermenter (holds at least 6 gallons, has a sealing lid that is drilled for an airlock)? If not and you plan on doing the standard 5 gallon batch then you'll need a bigger carboy/fermenter as you need usually need at least 1 gallons worth of headspace in the fermenter after you add the beer.

Outside of the normal stuff included in a starter kit, my next homebrew purchase would be a pot large enough to do full volume boils (about an 8 gallon pot for 5 gallon batches). But it isn't necessary to start, you can do partial boils with a smaller pot and still make good beer.

Yep, outside of the pot you're good to go.

Welcome to rabbit hole of home brewing. You'll be buying plenty more stuff soon enough.

Place in town posted that they were tapping a batch of this. I'm out of town though so might miss it.

That's a shelf-turd at the liquor stores near me. It's a very good beer but not really hard to acquire. The $22 price tag doesn't help I'm sure.

The barrel aged version? That is disappointing to hear (or reassuring since I likely won't get any). Like Duppin I can get regular around town too. The other one I posted earlier from Kansas I really enjoyed and the LA Trapped barrel aged also.

The barrel aged version is too expensive. I remember seeing it weekly at the store when I was really looking for some new stuff around October time. Pretty sure they make a good amount too.

I love the normal version of that beer. I wonder what the aging process would add to it.
Aging can oxidize a bit, but most of the time that's not really a problem. Normally from barrels (especially bourbon) you end up with vanilla flavors/aromas from vanillin that's usually developed from charring barrels. There's almost always a strong "booze" characteristic from liquor barrels (tequila, bourbon, scotch, "whiskey", irish whiskey, etc). Some of the other barrel aging will impart notes specific to the liquid kept in them, i.e. port flavors from port barrels, wine barrels giving wine characteristics (and there's a huge difference between red, white, and the specific sub-types), or even maple syrup barrels giving a nice sweetness.

New Holland out of WI even makes their own bourbon from barrels they've aged beer in (beer-barrel-aged bourbon). That could just be an urban myth, but they make their own Whiskey (and Hopquila).

To be bourbon it has to be aged in new barrels. I'm not sure what effect it would produce if you were to age whiskey in beer barrels, but I presume it would mostly be unnoticeable after 7ish years or something would go wrong in the meantime.

You could finish whiskey in beer barrels, but I'm skeptical of that too.

Yeah, it's "finished" in beer barrels.

The ABC liquor store down the street from me just opened their growler station today.

The little store downstairs does growlers. How long does beer in a growler keep?
Depends what it is and if you open it.

Heavy stouts and other high ABV can last for a long time (even though some claim they won't). I have a double stout cafe americana in my beer fridge since like August. It will most likely be perfectly fine whenever I decide to open it.

IPA? Drink ASAP.

Once you open a growler? Drink it all. Don't bother getting a growler unless you plan to drink it all whenever you open it.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother getting a growler of something you can find in bottles. It's rather pointless unless you have a large group gathering or something.
