Helles bocks/ Maibocks are cool. They are often pretty good. It's the Munich Helles that tends towards extreme blandness.

Apparently for sophisticated palates they offer subtle interplay. My palate is decent, but it's shaped by tasting whiskey so those kind of subtleties are completely lost on me. It's such a balanced, light style that it just comes across as tasteless.

One of the reasons I miss going to KC for work. Every time I went there a plate of Jack's Stack burnt ends and a boulevard unfiltered wheat was my first meal.
Boulevard unfiltered wheat is my beer of choice. Fuck putting fruit in it though...every bartender asks that? Thankfully, it is easy to come by in St. Louis these days as distribution has blossomed.

I heard somewhere that Boulevard Brewing Co. had been bought, just curious if that transaction has occurred.

Slaying this bad boy right now.

So creamy and chocolaty with coffee in there. I haven't had it since August or whenever it was released but it's much better after it's sat for a while. I only have one bottle left and I think I'll hold on to it for a vertical in the future.
Did you see this shitshow go on?
Too many people and not enough beer cause chaos at Cigar City Hunahpu's release | Potlikker | Creative Loafing Tampa

I sort of wanted to go... glad I never bothered!

Yes, I was there. I didn't get my bottles but I did have a guy I know get a case so he's selling me one which is all I really want/need. According to the brewer that made it; it's the best hunahpu they ever released.

Today is :

IMO it's better than Founders Breakfast stout.

Was it really as big a shitshow as it sounds like?

Darkness Day/Dark Lord Day don't turn out so badly, so I don't get why Cigar City didn't just take a page out of those playbooks on running the thing...

I could write an essay on this topic at this point but I'm tired of describing the hell to everyone as it is. Here is a quick version:

  • There were multiple fist fights in the crowd and some were kicked/punched while on the ground.
  • There were no lines for any of the beers. Basically it was a mob and you pushed your way to the front hoping what you wanted wasn't tapped (99.9% of the time it was).

oQolWE9.jpg

  • There were only supposed to be 3500 people but rumor is that CCB over sold by a couple thousand + people snuck in from behind a trailer. People say it looked like about 8000-ish. They stopped checking tickets soon after because they just gave up at that point. There was a line of people 4-5 wide going at least half a mile down the street.

  • People paid $50 for a guaranteed option to buy 3 bottles of Hunahpu (regular version). CCB specifically told everyone going to NOT SHOW UP EARLY. Cases weren't supposed to go on sale until after 4pm. People were walking out with cases of double barrel hunahpu (special release for the barrel aged club they have) before 2pm. The other special releases they had were also being sold which only further made the crowd eager once they learned. Another rumor being that people that were selling the bottles told their friends to come early and sold them all off.
  • All Hunahpu was sold out by 4pm before the majority of people even got their 3 bottles. They saw people leaving with cases of the beer all day.
  • Employees were acting like DICKS. Now this is rather normal for CCB lately. I stopped going to the tasting room specifically because the bar tenders piss me the fuck off with their attitudes toward customers that don't know craft beer that well. They also talk shit about random lower brewers. Fuck them and their hipster attitudes.
  • One employee shouted, "GO TO WHOLE FOODS AND BUY SOMEONE ELSES BEER WE DON'T CARE" as customers were wondering where their bottles were.
  • Another employee shouted "FUCKER" to one guy and "FAT FUCKER" to another guy who was simply asking what the deal was.

Hahahaha holy shit, that's fuck stupid. Thanks for the summation.

Darkness day rolls around like this: 5am show up for a wrist band, leave, day-drink at a local bar until 2pm, show back up at Surly, waltz in and pick up my 6 darkness, stop at the beer tents for something good/new, grab a street food something for the walk back to the car, and hit home by about 5pm. I skip the metal fest. Maybe it's the cold that keeps that assholes away.

My friend picked up a couple growlers from listermans, which is a local brewery/ homebrewing shop that makes fan-fucking-tastic beer but has no distribution. Then we finished up with about 12 oz of bourbon.

Moral of the story don't drive drunk. My wife picked me up with a very disapproving look. So other moral of the story, don't get fucking blizted on a Monday. I think it's Monday/ Tuesday morning anyways.

What a cluster fuck. I just can't imagine putting up with that nonsense just to get a few overpriced beers. As a matter of fact, I don't get any of these release events where you have to wait in line for hours for a taste. There is too much good beer readily available that is pouring these days for your time to be worth that.

Sounds like you won't have to worry about the Hunahpu event next year though, looks like they are canceling it and just are going to release it through distributors.

WTF man, you drink for over six hours and drive home?
Nah, I have a DD (or in this case, 2 other assholes and a DD). And I didn't say I was drunk, I said I day-drink. Can't bowl without beer.

That was lesson it took me a long time to learn.

Which is too bad. It's not the massive wait, it's the rest of the beers and the other shit going on at the festivals that make them fun.

Yeah, last year Boulevard got bought out by Duvel(Belgium), who also owns Ommegang which is based in NY.

Duvel immediately stated that they had no plans to alter anything that Boulevard does, I hope that stays true. They kind of inferred that the only thing they might do is use Boulevards facilities to possibly brew for Ommegang, and vice versa. I guess Boulevard has quite a bit larger brewing & bottling space, so they can churn out large batches quicker, so specialty/seasonals in small batches might be relegated to being brewed at the NY facilities, with large batch releases being done more in KC. Nothing has changed yet on that front though.

Drinking it, aging it or ebaying it?
I'll let it sit for at least 6 months. Probably longer as I don't mind drinking other stuff and waiting. I don't really ever sell the harder to get beers I find. It's just beer to me and a beer that I don't drink is a wasted beer imo.

If only I could find more Lagunita's Brown Shugga to last me 6 months.
