Continuing my adventures into sours withUinta's 21st Birthday Suit. Super citrus tart and sourness on this one. I like this a lot right now but would be curious to try it again with an additional 1-3 years of age on it (looks like my beer was bottled in early March of 2014). Would have liked to see a bit higher carbonation and head retention to release some of lemon aromas a bit more, but that is my only knock on this one.

That is the one I mentioned earlier in this thread that made me have a upset stomach the next day (my fault for drinking it at night). It is just a stupid amount of sour/tartness compared to a lot of sours I've had prior.

Probably going to finish my last bottle of Duchesse De Bourgogne tonight or possibly open up my Kriek De Ranke. Such tough decisions...

Last one for the night, 2014 Zure Van Tildonk Blonde Sour by Brouwerij Hof Ten Dormaal. This one is more funky than sour, to be expected with a spontaneously-fermented beer. Classic Brett characteristics in this one. Also low on the head retention but super effervescent. Right now the Brett flavors are really in balance the the base beer, some cellaring should really bring that Brett character forward so some aging would be my recommendation if you are picking up this beer.

Any recommendations on a Dark Lager? I like Sam Adams Winter Lager(out of season already wtf), Black Lager(out of season too), and Guinness Black Lager. The Guinness is just ok but I love the Sam's stuff.

What state do you live in (seriously)? The local options will usually be the best.

Illinois near Chicago
Lager specifically, I'm not sure. I'm sure there's something nearby but most places won't go through the extra hassle of lagering their beer.
You could try the brew pubs in Chicago (Goose Island's) and see if they have something. Half Acre is good, 3Floyds is good (terrible website redesign ahead), so is two brothers, but I don't think any of them lager their beers. I'd say hit up Map Room or Hop Leaf and ask the beer-hipster bartenders to fit you something local to that flavor profile.

I'm sort of lucky with a retardedly old lager-brewery in the area, so I get lagers and "German Craft Beer" regularly.

I've been looking to find some dark lagers as well because one of our upcoming homebrew-club competitions is a Schwarzbier. The selection is admittedly limited, so far I have had the Uinta Black Lager and the Sam Adams Black Lager both of which seemed pretty tasty but I *think* were kind of middle of the road flavor-profile wise. Haven't had much luck finding any authentic Schwarzbier's yet. Here is what the BJCP lists for recommended commercial examples of the American Dark Lager category:

Dixie Blackened Voodoo, Shiner Bock, San Miguel Dark, Baltika #4, Beck's Dark, Saint Pauli Girl Dark, Warsteiner Dunkel, Heineken Dark Lager, Crystal Diplomat Dark Beer.

I know some of those are pretty generic mass produced guys but the BJCP tries to list examples that are widely available. Anyways, let me know if you find anything worth trying.

I lived off Warsteiner and Warsteiner Dunkel in college. Unfortunately nowhere around me has it on draft, but it has been quite a while since I checked.

If anyone lives around south Florida, Funky Buddha is now selling two of their beers in bottles at stores(Total Wine, some Publix stores). Hop Gun IPA and their Floridian Hefeweizen. Both are pretty good.

Greatest week in SF is coming up. Beer Week also coincides with the release of Pliny the Younger. Toronado, one of the beer snob bars here, usually taps a new keg everyday at 11:30am during Beer Week. I think I'm gonna take a weekday off and hit that up this year. Looking forward to waiting an hour for a 8oz pour!

Holy shit. I may need to take the week off.

Alex, (or anyone for that matter) have you managed to find the Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA anywhere? I have seen it listed at placed that allegedly carry it, but have never actually seen it. I see that Dogfish Head is have a couple of events, and one of them they have the 120 minute listed as being available. I may need to go over and give that a go.

You'll definitely find 120 Minute during one of the Dogfish Head events. I may have seen it around, but I don't particularly care for it. Although last time I tried it I was a complete beer n00b.

Beer Week is amazing though. It's the greatest series of beer snobbery events I've ever experienced. My favorite events are actually the home brewer events. Some of the home brews are the best beers I've ever had. Plus, they are usually $40 for all you can drink. Totally worth it.

Yeah I am definitely going to have to take off a couple days to check out some of it. I have still yet to snag a Pliny the Younger tasting, but every year it comes around the thought of waiting in line just turns me off to it.

Toronado is your best chance at getting Pliny. If you take a weekday off for their daily keg-tapping you'll only have to wait an hour or so. Plus, it's not like the rest of the beer selection at that place sucks. And it's right next door to a really good taqueria so enjoy a breakfast burrito while waiting.

Toronado still doesn't know how many kegs they'll get, but they will announce it as soon as they do. They are pretty tight with Russian River (one of the only places that always has Elder on tap) so I imagine they will get quite a few.

The beer scene across the midwest is pretty good in general. I think Michigan is probably better, but Ohio is very respectable. I don't think anything compares to the west coast though. Oregon, California, and Washington have it on lockdown.
