It might have been a demographic issue. EVERYONE I knew had a Genesis, but I was in Jr High and Highschool during it's heyday. Everyone was big into Mortal Kombat, Madden, Joe Montana Football, NHL, College football, etc. All of my younger elementary school aged cousins and neighbors had a SNES
Not to mention Genesis was out two years before the SNES in North America. I had them both, but I knew a lot of people with either/or. I was 13 when Genesis came out.

There was a certain amount of that. Particularly with the fact that the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat had blood and the SNES version didn't. SNES was the "kiddy" system, so there was a certain amount of older kids looking down on people with Nintendo consoles. That wasn't just a thing that happened, either, Sega run some advertising campaigns making that comparison. Brilliant move since gamers were getting older.

@Angelwatch: Not saying that isn't true for you, just that it is anecdotal.

Yeah, I'm not disputing your numbers at all. You definitely seem to have done the research. But until your post I had no idea that the console war was as close as it was because, literally, all of my friends had a NES and SNES. So it probably is a demographic thing. I'd have been 12 when the Genesis launched in the U.S which would have made me 14 when the SNES launched. I also remember taking that SNES with me to college before getting a PSX my sophomore year. To this day I've never owned a Sega system. Where I lived, Nintendo won the war hands down but I'm not trying to dispute that the Genesis wasn't competitive (or even more successful) outside my little corner of the U.S.

Spronk: No Uncharted on that list and Infamous, Deep Down, Drive club, KH3, Knack, Mad Max, MGS5, PvZ: GW, Strider, The Order: 1886 just for the ones I'm 90-100% sure are console only. (Not necc PS4 exclusive for all, but many are)

And mind you 50% or more of the list I'm completely unfamiliar with.

How far apart were the announcements for release dates on the previous Gen? I'm wondering if Microsoft dropped the ball since they haven't given one yet or if this is par for the course.

Microsoft is just waiting for another show to give an announcement so it will be the talking point of the event, probably at Pax. This is just normal stuff since both companies want to have a surprise at the events leading up to release.

It's probably extremely wierd but I just can't wait to hold an xbox controller and feel the improvements. Being a huge fan of the 360 controller and hearing nothing but praise for the upgraded xbone controller gets me all hot and bothered.

The XBox 360(and the small/2nd gen XBOX controller) are easily the best console controllers ever made. The Sony Dual-Shock controllers feel like they are cheaper or made for kids or something, but they've just never been as comfortable as the 360 controller. I hope they made some small improvements(if even possible) but I hope they didn't change too much. The feel of the 360 controller is perfect.

Check this out for some hands on impressions. They've said only slight changes but good ones. They have specific rumble motors now. So for example when you pull the trigor it doesn't just rumble the whole control it rumbles that speciic trigger. They even did tests with like heart beats and being in a car to see the difference in rumbles. So all really cool stuff.

I think the PS4 controller has pretty much the same features but the actual controller SUCKKKKKS. I don't know how people even game with the pathetic excuse for a controller. It's like it's made for tiny asian hands. I honestly thought they'd change them for the ps4 was so shocked when they didn't. I HATTTTEE the ps 4 controller.

You hate the PS FOUR controller? You've actually used it hands on and feel that way? Because if you do, you're a severe outlier.

PS3 that's not at all odd to feel that way for, but there's been dozens of hands-on impressions and PS4 wins every single time.

I've actually been worried about the changes to the PS3 controller, because I think the PS3 controller is near perfect. (Seriously, what I really want is a PS3 controller with the triggers made like 360 triggers and no other changes...I'd be in heaven). Been hearing enough good about the PS4 controllers though that I'm being cautiously optimistic that the changes don't hurt it at the least.

It's not THAT far off from the descriptions, wider middle portion, better grips, better triggers are the key things. I'm fond of the PS3 controller myself being a small handed person. (even more skewed on my small hands than most men since my genetics only give me 3 usable fingers per hand - if you've heard of webbed toes, I had that - syndactyly - with my hands)

ohhh Mad Max is console only? Yeah, that game, KH3, and MGS5 will be console killer games for me, probably wait until they are out to buy one then.

Mad Max and PvZ: GW are the two I'm not 100% on, but 90%. No promises that Mad Max is console exclusive, but to date I'm excited about it as well and seen no evidence for PC yet. (Or XBOne either for that matter - although I'm sure it'll be on both)

Looks like so far I'm interested in 3 announced games; Titanfall (duh), Project Spark (duh) and Starbound. Two of them are Xbox exclusives, and one is on both. All will be on PC. I really never want to support Microsoft ever again, so it looks like ill be skipping a launch year of a new console generation for the first time... Ever...

Edit: that's a filthy lie... If Square-Enix pulls a rabbit out of their hat and FFXV is the game worthy of its predecessors (and it doesn't release on PC) ill buy a console.
