Edit: I guess you guys don't really follow the scene, but there are high level players that use pad, especially in the anime/Tekken communities. Most of them have to use PS1/2 pads with converters.

Of course there is, 99% of games don't use the d-pad for anything other than the occasional directional mash. The rest of the controller components are more complex and used in every game so obviously they would invest the vast majority of the R&D and manufacturing cost in the sticks and buttons.

Since its the exact same layout as the ps3 controller which was the exact same layout as the ps2 controller, I'd say we've all held the PS4 controller at least enough to know whether the position of the controls is works for you.

Since a lot of people that have held the DS4 say it is better than the Xbone controller, I would say no, we haven't all held the controller.

Let's forget the fact that it's a subjective thing and PS4's controller is essentially the same shape with the sticks in the same position...Obviously people that like the Xbox controller better are still going to like the Xbox controller. Stop being a Sony fan boy and use your brain. I think the Xbox controller is better. Most 3rd part controller manufacturers also think it's better. You like the PS controller. That's great.

Or maybe you can withhold judgement until you actually hold the two damn controllers and not try to say one is superior to the other until then? Cuz going by last gen really does mean shit.

If your issue is the placement of the left analog stick, which I think is the main issue most people have with the PS controllers, it doesn't seem that's going to change. Sony really just needs to leave that design in the past and put it in the correct position.

The PlayStation controller is balanced. Analogs are the same on both sides.

Xbox is an abomination with an arm growing from where it's left ear should be.

I can't stand the asymmetrical design of the Xbox controller, the dpad was an abomination, and the ABXY buttons always felt cheap to me.... Mind you, I was a very early ps1 adopter. I did however prefer the shoulder buttons on the 360 controller quite a bit, and the weight was better.

The DS4 looks very appealing. Love the thickness of the palm grips. Looks like its gonna be super comfy and I can't wait to hold one. The material seems to be super tactile looking too.

My opinion is that the 360 controller has always been superior for FPS games (Call of Duty and the like). However, I prefer the PS3 controller for every other type of game out there. Like Quaid, I got a PSX early in the life cycle so I've been using a Playstation controller for over a decade.

Yeah, maybe that's why I like the PS controller as well.

I had a PS1 fairly early on, then a PS2 at launch and PS3 a few months after launch, once they were available again.

Holy fuck I'd forgotten about that game. Twice, now. First time I met one of my girlfriend's families, her little brother had it and had never beaten it. My girlfriend knew I played video games, so asked me to help him with it. I started playing and the game was really familiar and the controls just made sense, I found hidden stuff really easily and her little brother and her were both really impressed. About halfway through I realize I've played and beaten this game before, in '95 when it was released. This was in '06, so more than a decade since I'd played it. And then I promptly forgot about it again till just now.

As I'm struggling to see how holding a controller that has EXACTLY the same layout as last gen is going to change someones mind. My butthurt is over your stupidity. I'm buying both consoles so not sure why I'd care whether you like the xbone's controller or not.

So when a steering wheel is an ovalesque shape versus a standard round shape it's still "exactly the same" for racing drivers because it's still roughly the same general layout, right?

Things like improving grip quality and widening the hold to something have a very tangible effect on how good a control mechanism used with one's hands. Shit, every mouse on earth has the same general layout, but some work better for some people versus others. Input devices are universally subjective, even when at a glance they're quite similar. [Note: Don't even get me started on Dvorak keyboards...]
