Ridiculous Forbes article on resolution differences:

The Coming Resolution Wars Between PS4 And Xbox One - Forbes

Yes, there will be brand loyalty, particularly among FPS series fans (who will no doubt gravitate towards the XBone). However, new adopters or those with little brand loyalty, will most certainly choose the more powerful option which, coincidentally, is also 20% less expensive.

Can't I get NBA2k14 with high resolution graphics right now for 30 bucks for the PC.

Why the fuck would I buy it for double on a console..

It's still sad that neither console can reliably output 1800p at 60fps like everyone was expecting.
If you want 60fps games, buy a PC. Hell, if you want 30fps games, buy a PC (I'm looking at you GTA5 and The Last Of Us). Console developers have always chosen better graphics over frame rates (with, of course, a few notable exceptions like racing games, action games and some FPS), and that's probably never going to change.

My xbro buddy told me today that PS4 is going to have overheating issues because they chose to render at 1080p, and that Sony is being deliberately secretive toward journalists getting PS4s because they're hiding something.

They can but every game has to balance between fps, resolution, simulation complexity and a host of other things that make up system demand. Not to mention budget. There's a sweet spot that devs target and it's less than 60fps. If you move from 60fps to 30fps you can do a lot more with the rest of the game. Additionally having a lower FPS with higher fidelity results in better marketing material.

Personally? I'd rather start with 60fps and make concessions elsewhere.

I am a PC gamer. Last console I owned was a Gamecube. After that I said "Never again". Going to start building a new gaming rig for the Witcher 3.

I mean, the Gamecube was good in its own right.. but really that shouldn't have been your measuring stick on "never again"

Yeah, it blows. I think it'll be a lot better 2-3 years down the road when people have their engines optimized and have had more time with the systems. The first two years are definitely going to be rough though, even with how much easier it is to build games for these systems. Though, the PS4 will probably reach higher levels of optimization faster since you don't have to jump through any massive hoops on it (unlike the Xbone) which will keep it further and further ahead.

And that's just considering the "basics" of the hardware. You can go a lot deeper into the PS4 with GPGPU compute and itsfullhUMA architecture. Developers that learn to take advantage of this will be able to push a lot more power out of the machine and we're going to see some crazy shit from people like Naughty Dog in the coming years.

Here's an older article that goes pretty deep into the PS4's architecture and is a great read:Gamasutra - Inside the PlayStation 4 With Mark Cerny

Just pasting the stuff about the Game Installs though:

At the New York City unveiling of the system, Cerny talked about PlayGo, the system by which the console will download digital titles even as they're being played.

"The concept is you download just a portion of the overall data and start your play session, and you continue your play session as the rest downloads in the background," he explained to Gamasutra.

However, PlayGo "is two separate linked systems," Cerny said. The other is to do with the Blu-ray drive -- to help with the fact that it is, essentially, a bit slow for next-gen games.

"So, what we do as the game accesses the Blu-ray disc, is we take any data that was accessed and we put it on the hard drive. And if then if there is idle time, we go ahead and copy the remaining data to the hard drive. And what that means is after an hour or two, the game is on the hard drive, and you have access, you have dramatically quicker loading... And you have the ability to do some truly high-speed streaming."

To further help the Blu-ray along, the system also has a unit to support zlib decompression -- so developers can confidently compress all of their game data and know the system will decode it on the fly. "As a minimum, our vision is that our games are zlib compressed on media," said Cerny.
So, the BR disc is basically just for authentication since Blu-ray is really too slow and the game fully installs on the HDD. Same goes for the Xbone, but I don't know if it has the same PlayGo type system.

Here's some ugly news:famousmortimer: Xbox One OS and Xbox Live issues bouncing about as we approach launch - NeoGAF

Xbox One OS and Xbox Live issues bouncing about as we approach launch |

The short story is that Xbox Live and the OS, especially in functions that involve XBL, are a complete fucking mess. One source says we aren't talking weeks until it works correctly but "months." Things like parties dropping people when moving from one thing to another. Connectivity issues. Missed invites. Friend requests not working, etc.

"Let me get into some technical detail regarding it - on 360, the OS handles all of the party and chat functionality. All you do is hook up the XBL VOiP OS API into your game, and it does most of the work for you. With it results in is a shared experience across multiple entertainment. If you're watching movies or playing games, you can do it together. However, this system is entirely different on Xbox One. So, lets say me, you, and Thuway have xbox one's that are online. We are signed in our profiles. Sitting at the home screen, we are considered to be in a "Xbox Party" on the server. There are no more 'party leaders'. With that said if any one of us decide to start a game, the party is shifted over to that game's party system. Each game now has their custom written VOIP." (Pete note: shoutout to thuway!)

I asked if could be fixed soon. He said that anything is possible and Microsoft is obviously working on it but he thinks it will be months, not weeks. Getting online launch games certified is taking so long that it's pushing games after launch back.

So at this time as we near release, who's switched over from PS4 to Xbox One? I'm curious after all the changes.

...People who buy both don't count.

I mean, the Gamecube was good in its own right.. but really that shouldn't have been your measuring stick on "never again"
Lol, no shit.

Source confirming this? All reference i can find to either system utilizing hUMA is all conjecture in late August, and I have not been able to find an official (or even reputable) source on either side to confirm.

Its architecture is exactly how huma works, they basically built it together with AMD. The Xbone is also close to it, but more like pseudo-huma.

Sony is also part of the HSA consortium.

Again man... Where is this data you are getting?

That article you linked is not a press release from Sony, or anything close to confirming either side uses a unified memory architecture. Especially one developed by, or in collaboration with AMD.

Trust me, I've looked... Cuz if they did utilize hUMA (officially) I would have preordered one because then at least one aspect of either of these systems would have felt 'next gen' to me.

I think these are soft launches for press/internal teams. Anyways it's hilarious, don't Sony and MS have the money to hire devs to think this shit through. Makes me think all this was this just thrown up at the last moment.
