Plex works without even browser workarounds - it's not exactly dire. (Frankly, even when it does get DLNA, I'll still use Plex since I like the GUI vs. DLNA ones usually being ass)
Have you gotten MP3s to stream through Plex?

I use slacker, but I still have many rare tracks/albums that you simply can't find anywhere else. I'd absolutely love to stream them through my PS4.
Not sure, I see a Music option, but not messed with it - I use Spotify since Spotify is awesome and lets my phone stream through my PS4 soundsystem without any stress.

DLNA wasn't even on my list, seriously LOL at that being the final selling point.
It was the #2 thing on my list, behind "a game I actually want to play". Bloodborne and Plex got me to buy a PS4 finally.

As for Plex vs. DLNA:

I signed up for Plex Pass to try the official PS4 app. My advice: don't bother. The app has a worse UI and less features than just using it through the web browser, and you're paying $4.99 a month for the "privilege". You can't even use channels with the fucking POS. The one and only thing it does that the web browser version doesn't is play music (and shitty AVI/MP3 movie rips too I suppose). It transcodes both FLAC and MP3 to AAC in order to get the PS4 to play it, so it's still not ideal at all.

My experience isn't console related but I stream MP3's through Plex from my PC to my phone/tablet on a daily basis. In fact I just did while mowing my lawn.
Doesn't work with the PS4. Plex won't transcode MP3 or even FLAC when you're using the web browser, and the PS4 has absolutely no MP3 support whatsoever. If you pay for Plex Pass and use the app, it does transcode to AAC and it will play just about anything (with degraded quality).

The PS4 browser uses the generic "Web" profile in Plex, so maybe someone could write a custom profile for it that handled transcoding properly. I'm not interested in having my FLAC transcoded to AAC, so I haven't looked into it at all myself.

The PS4 will play MP3's but you need to put them on a flash drive. I have a usb micro flash drive plugged into my PS4 for the stuff Spotify doesn't have. It's not as great as having everything on my NAS but it's something at least.

the good news is that much of the smart app functionality has moved to TVs, all the samsung and LG tvs in my house have full DLNA support, mp3 streaming, spotify, netflix, amazon, youtube, etc apps all built in and they all work pretty well with just the TV remote.

i think honestly a lot of people here just hate the idea of using the apps built into their TV, the DLNA apps on my TVs are pretty good now and I can use my android phone to fully control them and go through my PCs shared playlists etc with ease. I'm sure something like the chromecast also works well, although since I like full 1080p ripped movies it isn't a solution until wireless speeds get better.

You still need to install Plex on your PC to cast the files but i don't have to touch anything anymore on any new TV bought in the last few years

Not an option for me, I need the PS4 to do everything when it comes to streaming my own media from my server. I can live without the music support, Spotify and Amazon Prime are fine for that.

Plex is working for me, I just don't like using their product. Trying to charge me a monthly fee to stream my own content within my local network is fucking retarded. I was fine with paying a one-time cost for the Android app, which does everything I need it to without a Plex Pass, but the PS4 version annoys me even though I can circumvent their stupid scam with the browser. Plus the PS4 Plex app is TERRIBLE; in addition to what I said above about it not supporting channels, you can't even control the PS4 Plex app from the Android app. It feels like an alpha version that got shoved out the door because they wanted to cash in on Plex Pass subs before Sony finally adds their own DLNA client. The web browser gets the job done though, so whatever.

The only thing pissing me off now is that the assholes at Sony decided not to support the PS3 Bluray remote on the PS4 even though it's just a simple Bluetooth device. It's not even like they're trying to coerce people into buy a new PS4-only remote; they simply don't make one anymore. Playstation App on my phone kind of works, but it's far from ideal.

What are you using to watch 1080p right now?

I would assume he meant that his TV uses wired ethernet. I've got my PS4 wired for the same reason.

Finally moved the ps3 out of the living room to the kids room. The lack of a ps4 remote really really does suck. All the 3rd party ones have ass reviews too. Big wtf for sony there.
