to their credit xbox has done a remarkable turnaround in the past 12 months under phil spencer. late last year they were at nearly 2m disparity between ps4 and xbox one sales, and the number growing. as of last month the number has shrunk to 800k and they could run even this holiday depending on who is willing to do what. Both have 500gb and 1tb models, both have a number of good games they could bundle in, and both have shrunk costs to under $250 for each system so they can sell at $249, $299, or $349 and still make money.
PS4 wins on raw technical specs (1080p vs 720/900 on xbox for a lot of games) but xbox one is doing really well with holiday exclusives (halo 5, tomb raider, forza 6 vs. uncharted collection, maybe no mans sky?) plus they have a huge back pocket advantage with backwards compatibility for free now. if they can get more games rolled in and put it out by late october a bunch of games will include free copies of the back catalog via BC. Fallout 4 is already doing it, the xbox version comes with free Fallout 3 whereas the PS4 has nothing. Its also a huge incentive for 360 owners to upgrade if they can take their entire library along, whereas PS3 users have to keep their system or do that stupid PSNow shit, which you will pay $15/mo for.
I'm pretty interested to see if Sony is going to pull out any surprises, like maybe dropping the price of PS+ or something even crazier like making PSNow part of PS+. We'll probably have to see xbox make huge gains this holiday for them to feel they need to make such moves though, but thats the good nature of competition
