Any single genre is going to be a small niche - don't the biggest niches only have something like a 20% adoption rate? That's the point.
FPS are a fraction of the whole market. If you're losing sales on "Adventure", "Platformers", "Indies", "RPGs", and all the other categories to dominate in just "FPS" you're on the losing end of the stick.
Hell, "Casual Games" are a pretty big niche as well, do you honestly think the original Wii was a rousing success because of that?

I'm weird. I actually play a lot of FPS games for the solo campaigns (which is one of the big reasons Titanfall turns me off since, if I understand things right, even the campaign is multiplayer).
It's also worth noting that one of the big reasons why people preferred the Xbox for FPS games was simply due to the superior controller (for a FPS game). The PS4 controller is actually very comfortable for FPS games and they've reduced that advantage quite significantly. However, you're right, there are a lot of "bros" who think that XBox is the "FPS" console and will flock there regardless. They can have their system for all I care. I'll be happy with my PS4 and PC for gaming thank you very much.

Niche has such a flexible use across different markets perhaps I'm too used to using it differently than some of ya'll. (in grocery sales - tea is considered niche, even though ~30% of customers last I read things purchase tea at least quarterly - coffee is not with about 60%) Fact is though that 21% of game sales while ignoring 70-80% isn't a good sign. PS3 was "bad" when it was doing the same across a few categories after all - and that was a varied title base versus a narrow one.

Read back in the thread - Column was claiming that XB1 in a better system for FPS focused gamers - as if that was a good business model to only court one audience. (call it a niche or whatever you want)
Right now what he was claiming would be analogous to saying the Year 1 PS3 library issues weren't really an issue and the PS3 could've done quite well without expanding it's focus. It's a ludicrous suggestion. That's my point.
But please, feel free to misinterpret this again and again. It's a simple concept, I've explained with a pretty clear comparison twice now - so I'm sure it'll be misunderstood again.
Xbox one has no current library issues,,, and it's always been a healthy console for FPS shooters all the way back to the original.
If you really think there only focus is FPS shooters you are smocking crack. They have the only console exclusive driving game I believe, and the only fighter.

Ill be probably picking xboner up this xmas since all my kids buddies all bought xboners instead of PS4s, dont blame them since they are hard to find. But then they will have both to play. But Ill tell you, the PS4 has a lot of dust on it. If it wasn't for netflix, I don't even think it would get turned on at all this past few months.

JUST Kinect stuff. 3/5 of your list doesn't even have release dates beyond speculation. [Hell, have the even shown a screenshot for any of those 3 yet? I never said that was MS's focus.I said those are the titles that have been announced for that system as exclusives. A genre that has 21% of the market, and a reason an Xbro would be into the new system.
Obviously MS just wants FPS's going forward that is why they made the Kinect mandatory, and are diving into indie games.

You do realize that COD isn't an exclusive right? And by all accounts, the PS4 is better than the XBone version too.
COD on Xbox gets packs almost 2 month's in advance.
The last map pack took forever to reach the PS4. So yeah people have made the Xbox one the COD machine.

Yeah but like I said, all my kids friends are sporting the brand new shiny xboner. So my kids now, even with the better more powerful PS4, are feeling left out. I knew I should of just bought the damn xboner this past xmas instead of going through all the trouble of finding a PS4.

Aside from Infamous Second Son, obviously a lack of titles to play on either system will have it collect dust. Mine has been getting more use. At least though I no longer have to go through a paywall to stream Amazon Prime/Netflix content - which is nice. Even though I jumped on that PS Plus deal for $29 bucks for a year a while back on Amazon. There is a lot of value there though so it's all good.
I do agree with Vaclav though. Pitching the Xbone as the "pinnacle" FPS system is not only ridiculous, it's wrong. The Cloud service issues alone with Xbox Live cropping up has enough to say about that one even with the Titanfall launch. To the point even Respawn wasn't even playing the politically correct card - they were just flat out pinning 100% responsibility on MS and their cloud arch.
Micrisoft has a shit ton of backtracking to do and a lot of shit to fix. Which may even be re-engineering a new console to launch in 4 years at this point if they have any hope of playing with Sony after their disasterous console launch, and horrible mismanagement of the system itself. Not to mention, completely missing what their customers wanted by about 60 planets to the left.
