I forgot to mention it but that was also the year of Joe Flacco turning elite for 4 games. I wonder if anyone's ever made as much money in one month as he did that year.

Flacco played well that playoffs (especially 2nd half of AFC title game against Pats), but he benefited from a few dropped picks.

Don't disagree with any of this, just pointing out that the main key is getting hot at the right time. No top 10 placements in either category from 3 of the last 4 winners is pretty crazy. Also ranking can be deceptive in the regular season. Even using the Colts as an example, Manning's 1 SB win there their D played a hell of a lot better in the playoffs that year (getting healthy at the right time always helps, Ravens benefited from this as well) than the regular season.

Well yeah, hot streaks and injuries aside, if all things otherwise being equal....oh and the Pats were at home too. So for the Colts or anyone in the AFC, going on the road in the playoffs and you can't play Dorrun the ball? You're probably gonna have a bad time.

Agreed home field in AFC matters a lot when Pats are in the mix. You will obviously want to be able to play solid D and run the ball up there in January, but the Pats manage to let Brady air it out still. Not trying to say it's a bad thing to be ranked higher in rushing/D, just that the paradigm is changing. Weather effects later in the season (playoffs) will make it tougher to rely on the passing game, but it can be done nowadays.

Colts could really benefit from the homefield maybe more than anyone in the AFC. Anyway, I didn't really mean this is some hard and fast rule about running and D in the playoffs like you hear so often. Just that for the Colts it probably did make a huge difference and maybe would have gotten them some better seeding from the regular season as well. So for any preseason premature ranking, you have to think that the Colts need to show a little something more in one of those categories to take the next step. Especially if they have to go win in NE again...or Baltimore or Pittsburgh or Cincinatti or Denver again assuming healthy Manning.

Agreed, and the Colts' possible seeding gets boosts from their division (still think they win it easily), and Brady probably/possibly missing first 4 games. Thing about AFC North is I think they'll all end up beating up on each other enough that Colts will end up with a higher seed than whoever comes out of that division. I think Denver is still good but yeah Manning's health will be pretty much the deciding factor on them.
