No, you were right about what reasons they were giving for limiting the API. You take Paul Sage at his word, most of us blame him for torpedoing a massively budgeted game built on a loved franchise.

Normally, I would be stoked. However, I participated in 3 beta weekends . . or as I like to call them . . "The Paint-Drying Marathons".
To give credit where credit is due, I thought the game's graphics and music were very well done. I didn't experience any lag, and I had no problems logging in. I also didn't run into the extreme amount of issues that others were having which required them to relog. I'm not saying I didn't have to relog. I'm just saying I didn't have to do so to the extremes that others apparently did.
That being said, I just didn't have any fun in the game. I found it to be a tedious, mind-numbing bore. Hopefully they've revamped the entire game since the weekend before last.

They won't back down either. This is the infalliable Paul Sage we are talking about. Where 99% of the team is wondering how the hell one guy can think he is so right in the face of ever conclusive evidence he isn't. Including declined sales numbers. He'll be at Zynga or Battlecry within 2 months.
