I'm an avid reader, but I've morphed into preferring games having the depth of story and presentation of Dark Souls. Let me research it if I want, but throw me in the fucking world and make me the story.
Yeah you nailed it here. It was the same with EverQuest. Story was a side step but if you ever wanted to figure out what was going on and why, you usually could through the lore in the system. Dark Souls does a great job of this. The only problem there is I am too busy getting my ass kicked to be able to care about it more. Haha.

The reason the video looks better is obvious. It went through marketing. The gameplay videos all show with the highest graphical sliders for now. Either way, graphics don't make the game anyway and the gameplay itself looks about as fun as watching Tennis.

Being the "chosen one" along with thousands of others isn't any dumber than a thousand people saving a village or killing the big bad end boss for the 10th time.

As long as there aren't forced cut scenes that you can't skip it won't have a significant impact on the majority of players.

Play a single player game if you want to be the big bad hero. You simply won't get that feeling in a MMO no matter how they design it.

I agree, in an MMO you're a mercenary and nothing more.
I think there's a lot of room in MMOs to have your character be something more than a mercenary. Having your character be "The Hero" in an MMO is a dumb direction to take, but I think MMOs could do a lot more than they currently do in shaping a role and story for your character in one.

I wish MMOs would evolve to be more robust worlds that have more you can influence in them than just being a random soldier killing big monsters and evil dudes. I'd like to see more stuff like intricate political systems and factions and monarchies. Stuff like having merchant and traders guilds that have more control over economies.

Do people really feel like they're the lone big bad hero when they play single player games? I've always been aware that a million other players have played the same game and done the same stuff. The only difference in an MMO is you can see those players on your screen sometimes.

There's plenty of things to hate without forcing stuff like this

SWTOR did a pretty good job with story, so it is possible to integrate into a mmo. It was the rest of that game's suckage that killed it.

Players will create this ad hoc if you take the guard rails off of the game. Give people an incentive to band together for survival as well as the ability to take from others who fail to protect themselves and this shit will pop up out of thin air.

I don't need to feel like a hero. In fact, that's what kind of forces me into a template with these games - that everything is ultra heroic is just a kind of fa?ade when there are 10,000 other heroes all fighting together for something. I like Dark Souls because we are all dead, ghosts, nothings; but think about the difficulty of mimicking the Dark Souls play into an MMO.

I'd rather play the loser. I want to play a game where at the end, I severely fuck everything up so much it ruins the game for everyone for like a week.

You are the reason we can't have nice things.

I want to play a vandal. It's a non heroic archtype that only has one ability -- the ability to draw cartoon penises on any solid surface. Someone needs to make that game.

I'd rather play a "let's fuck everything up" type character as well than the "crawling out of nowhere adventurer mandatory becoming a faithful hero changing the events' tide by killing some guys for a greater good" for the sake of a (most of the time) cheesy plot with Hollywood-like scenarios. Anyway ESO's production feels like a lot of talentless hacks grouped together by Matt Firor to squeeze a licence's tits upon boxes sales, therefore I wouldn't crave ESO's storyline. Based on the available leaks, it seems like they stole Morrowind "ouf of the boat" momentum to run a SWTOR-like scenarized plot. That's the whole problem with nowadays MMOs, they hire people with shitty degrees (hello Bioware) instead of hiring talented folks. They'll skull rape ES lore by scratching its eyes, cook it on a minutewave and serve it as a "unique storytelling experience with choices who matter", adding +1 to a rep bar you'll forget as soon as you reach level cap.

has there been a AAA comedy MMO that just goes all out and pokes fun of all the MMO stereotypes (bear ass quests, a million heroes, boss respawns, etc)? Wildstar seems a bit close but more on the Wow style of pop culture references.

I know wow has a bunch of quest hubs that do it but man I'd love to play an all out comedy MMO in the style of Saints Row or Space Quest or something, with a full dildos-everywhere set of armor in randomized bright colors whose ultimate quest is to get a good burger. But nah, the 50th MMO that has you go from the shitty retard in linen cloth (with no soul) to the guy in emofag black armor saving the world is great too.

Amen. It's high time MMOs were living, breathing worlds with economies that have change and real supply and demand, instead of the static respawn laden treadmills that currently exist.

They are making an MMO right? They seem to be focused on the individual experience, defining their idea of the individual players role in the gameworld, and making a single engrossing storyline for the entire individual playerbase. No mention of the community (except for killing each other). I think I played this game, it was called swotor.

Yeah I agree. I want an MMO that is a living breathing escape from RL world. Not a "kill this many things to get next level" MMO like they all have been lately. What first drew me to EQ was the idea of living in this other world, trading, interacting, exploring, and yes fighting. Hell I think I spent more time in UO crafting and building my house and selling things from it, than I did fighting.

WoW and these copies are nothing more than action games with some RPG elements. We need a true online "RPG". Think of a well done MMO like Game of Thrones MMO (Please don't make this, game industry) . Politics, multiple heroes/anti-heroes of all chaotic, lawful, etc. Time to put the RPG back into MMORPG. The next game that breaks away from the MMOAction mold, and does this well done, will probably be the next big hit.
