Since there isn't anything interesting on the horizon then why have you not considerednot playing a MMO?

The genre is in stagnation/decline. MMOs that is being released now is of little difference or inferior to WoW that was released about a decade ago. Unless there is some kind of radical revamp, this industry will only carry on how it is with clone after clone after fantasy clone.

People who read this board most likey would have come from the old board and would have been playing MMOs since 1999. That's14 yearsago. I don't know about you but I am certainly different now that what I was 14 years ago. MMOs have came and gradually faded away in my life.

Don't play MMOs just for the sake of having to play a MMO. If there is nothing interesting then stop playing and look into doing something else. When you stop playing, you will be surprised at how much more free time you have on your hands to pursue other activities.
Lol, I play mmo's because they are entertaining. Don't play as much as I use to but that has more to do with RL obligations than the mmo's themselves. I assume everyone is pretty much the same way.

Nobody plays mmos because they feel they have to. To even accuse people of that makes you sound like a moron.

Ok, not wanting to start a flame war with you but,

From your own mouth, you said that:

The game might be crap on a silver stick and most of us will still buy it (raises hand - guilty as charged). Even crappy mmo's are fun for a short time right after launch, just because they are new and different'
Why the hell would you want to do that? Also, don't assume yourself for 'most of us' because you are not. In your words, as long as they carry on releasing MMOs that are fun for a 'short time' then you will continue to buy it? No wonder the industry is in the state as it is if you were 'most of us'.

Also there are tons of other people to play with at launch, mmos are much more fun with a ton of people around, even crappy mmos.
Yeah, because in your world, playing with 'tons of other people' is full of fun, meaningful interaction and smelling of roses whereas the reality is that most MMOs are filled with people being asshats, don't like/need to communicate with each other and cross server LFD groups that might as well be bots than people. When was it that it was really meaningful to be playing with 'tons of people' and not a small group of already known friends?

I am not accusing people of 'having to play' MMOs. Read the rest of the sentence. I am saying that if there is nothing interesting then why settle for mediocrity? Might as well quit for good or until the genre actually innovates rather than immitates.

People plan to buy games like this because 'there is nothing better on the horizon' so even if this game gets shit reviews, buggy as hell, features that were planned for release but then on launch is decided that 'it will be released at a later date' and is 'crap on a silver stick' you will still buy it because 'it will be fun for a short time'.

Okay then, more power to you. Who am I to question your taste and how you spend your money?

Actually Grim is pretty spot on with his "most of us" opinion. Sales figures prove this.

So the industry will continue churning out stale MMOs and most of us will continue to buy it

No wonder MMOs hasn't progress from a decade ago

Pretty much.

I think the issue you are having is not understanding that while most of us may call mmos mediocre and uninspired, we still find them to be much better entertainment than other activities.

Yep, even the shortest lived MMO ever, Defiance, still provided more hours of entertainment than any single player game, save maybe the TES games.

Also, Im just a fan of mmos. For some reason I cannot get into single player games anymore. I play them, but rarely finish them because I just like the experience of playing with others that much more. I play a single player game these days and just get to a point where I tell myself , shit I would rather be playing a mmo right now with other people.

Even the shitty mmos, like SWTOR and WAR, shit even Conan, were all a blast in the beginning days for a few months. And they were all memorable. IMO, they are all worth it just to level up one time in the beginning days with high populations.

Dunno, maybe it's just me getting old. What I used to think that MMOs is fun entertainment, I consider now as mediocre and uninspired as you say with all the clones being released. Hence why I quit playing MMOs and pursue other activities which I find more fun instead.

Me not buying the game isn't going to change the industry. It only keeps me from having that initial new mmo fun. I do think change is coming simply from the fact that people churn and burn all these new mmo's. These games have very long development cycles and change is sadly real slow.

The problem isn't games like WoW. The problem is the lack of diversity in the genre.

I do not think most people buy every MMO that shows up, its just that there's a sucker born every minute and the first MMO you get into is awesome so there's probably 20 million+ suckers chasing that experience. If 1/10 or even 1/20 of them fall for any given MMO it'll be a box sales success and the cycle continues. Besides playing in some free trials or generally F2P games I bought EQ (played 4 years), PS1 (a month here and there, never felt it worth the ongoing sub), WoW (played 2 years), WAR (played a month), EVE (paid for much longer because of their insidious offline training then I actually played which was something over a year with breaks), TOR (played 2-3 months), GW2 (still playing but had a break here and there)... That doesnt seem like a long list for over a decade of MMO gaming.

Mind you I'm not saying dont ever buy those MMOs that are likely to fail within a quarter. If you think they'll be entertaining enough for the box price by all means go for it, but you make it sound like everyone with a forum account here auto-buys every MMO ever.

Okay, so finally a little gameplay. It still seems pretty canned, and there isn't any action to speak of, but graphics-wise it looks way better than the leaked vid. This makes me hopeful that a lot of polishing is taking place. Some animations look off, and some look good (guy tasting his mixture, lol.)

I find it kind of retarded that they sat down and said, "Let's make a video showing that you can pick up trash objects." At least when Wildstar made their stupid movement video it has some comedy in it.

Nobody said everyone. The majority do buy most.
Nobody said everyone, right. But I dont doubt the majority of this forum buys most MMOs. I just think its only barely the majority and not 90% of us.

And obviously only a small portion of MMO-interested people in general buy most games or AoC, TOR, Aion, Rift etc would have reported 6 million+ box sales.

Haha, I agree, but if you were to read the Bethesda forums, you would be amazed how many ES fans are clamoring to be able to pick up trash objects

Yeah I guess it does "feel" like TES if you can pick up random trash, how is it handled in terms of mmo though, is it instanced nodes or is it respawning shared ressources? How fast do they respawn? Cause if it's not instanced this shit's gonna be empty all the time with chinese bots looting them non stop. And if it's instanced there will be even more bots, unless they somehow make it so you can't sell any of that shit ever, or if they have a multiple currency system(similar to F2P games) where the gold you get basically buys you nothing useful.

I'm sure they thought about that kind of shit, they're not making a mmo like a single player game and forgot about all the issues, right? Right?

haha. yea. Im sitting here thinking. is this a good thing or bad thing? I like open world games... but Im pretty sure I didnt like love rummaging through every single barrel, create, trashcan for random shit in these games. I dont think I would consider that a "feature".

And there are chests, and you'll be like "wow I'm opening a chest" and there will be things in that chest that you can take. And that's just one of the many features we have in our game!
