Well, I didn't mention 15. I agree the car driving was dumb, even more so once you can fly with invisible walls and the ability to crash. However, the combat was something fresh even if it wasn't great and the summons were absolutely spectacular. The most impressive and powerful feeling summons of any FF to date.
To each his own I guess. I'm tired of the action rpg combat style .call me old fashioned but I do love turn based.

The power "To Zanarkand" has when you're on the road leading to Yunalesca is awesome as fuck. The game nails that atmosphere of you being powerless and caught up in a cycle of death.
I'm replaying FFX and I couldn't wait to get to that road to Zanarkand for that music. It was such a cocktease too since that's also the song on the steam menu!

Having replayed FF5-10 in the last year, it's funny that I always gave up when the endgame grind started. I've only actually finished FF5 this year.

To each his own I guess. I'm tired of the action rpg combat style .call me old fashioned but I do love turn based.

I doubt it'll happen again, but replaying through X and getting through P5 made me really, really want another turn-based Final Fantasy. I miss those.

Really bummed that FF7 Remake is an action RPG.

I could not get over some very anime-isms in FFX like - the summon things are guardians and reflections of those who call them, this mother fucker has anima and no one bats a damn eye... aww its okay hes the religious leader we all trust

I did not like the aspect of nothing is real, and we had moments of "this is the real world" or how things can change stuff "for realzy" then to break it...

However, it finally did "the love story" that they have been attempting to do since 8 - and X did it right finally - when tidus and yuna finally fucking kissed it was great- they hit emotion and atmosphere out of the park with X- and the intro screen was just so depressing...and this sense of dread... the action, excitement and emotion leading up in the first part of the game, then you get to the road to xanarkand and you play through the intro screen...its...whoa

It was mainly that IV was the first story focused game I ever played and it blew me away. VI wasn't necessarily worse just different. And to me, the second half of the game didn't really feel all that epic to me. It felt like you were just chasing Kefke around to the next spot. I had way over hyped the game to levels noone should go, so even a masterpiece was a let down.

And yeah all the remasters until 10 have been pretty lame.

I agree it's an issue with VI, that most of the people who praise it endlessly never bring up. Still think it's an amazing game and solidly #2 overall for me among the FF's...I just wonder if they were up against the deadline or didn't know how to incorporate any real interaction between the players and Kefka into their "open world" that was the World of Ruin. I think Kefka suffers for it as a villain as well, for all the love he gets, he doesn't "really" destroy the world, just reshapes it, without killing anyone that it would be important to kill...who then get to wander around freely meeting up and getting powerful before going to kick down his tower of trash whenever they feel like it. WoR is still fun with a lot of secrets, but the super tight story up to that point loses steam for me.

I really kind of wish it was still turn based too...but knowing they're going to try to snag new players or younger players with the remake too, figure I just have to deal with the action based combat.

Kefka did destroy the world, as much as one can that is planning on still residing and ruling over it - there are only small little pods of people left, the world is truly a ruin - he won, he is in control and all of the heroes are gone and have been gone for awhile.

Our grand collection of heroes failed, and they all knew it and that failure and their own personal demons essentially destroyed each of them- Celes attempted to kill herself - its not simply "the next day..." after the world was blown the fuck up. Terra, the one who started it all says fuck it, there is no way to win...only survive and attempts to protect orphans and is even failing at that so to say.

The open-ish world of the world of ruin segment of FF6 was mean to feel pathless and not very hopeful.

It didnt have a plot? again... what plot do you want to come from utmost failure? You got to see every one of your characters at their lowest points and various levels of fuck it - and build themselves back up in order to face an even more powerful version of something that has already wiped the floor with your ass and reshaped the entire fucking planet.

And even when you win...the world is still in shitty condition.

I actually liked the world of ruin in VI. It really had a desolate hopeless feeling to it, and by finding your friends and allies you started piecing that hope together until you faced Kefka in the climax. If it were me I'd probably have made getting all the characters apart from Gogo, Umaro and Mog mandatory though.

Evil clown who you spent most of the WoB just beating and trolling steals the Emperor's idea with the Statues and causes a calamity. But...didn't "destroy" the world. Just reshaped it. I'm not trying to say the World of Ruin was bad by any stretch, just weird to not have any direct interaction with Kefka as you're getting the band back together just seemed strange. They weren't all at their lowest points. Sabin is helping hold a house up, Edgar up to his old tricks trying to find Figaro, Gau just went back to the Veldt, Mog back to the moogles. Relm just chilling painting for rich guy. I like how they portrayed Celes and Terra. Locke as well (no real surprise as they are pretty much the 3 main stars of the group). None of this is bad by any stretch, even if I didn't like all of the side quest areas for each individual character, you just had this very tight story in WoB, and it gets cut off a little bit by the shift to WoR. Ends up an easter egg hunt for your team, treasures, and random stuff.

I thought it would have been better had there been SOME direct interaction like Kefka trying to prevent the team from getting together/stronger coming to stop him. The fact your party is ridiculously overpowered with the broken combat (SNES version especially) just makes it stranger when in essence he's just chilling on the tower of trash waiting for you to come wreck him. The supposed "God" in control of the world. Without Gestahl's plan, Kefka's just almost comedic relief. Certainly still insane, poisoned Doma, and with the iconic laugh...but they really just virtually nothing else with him for the whole WoR, and his only claim to fame is stealing another's idea for power. Maybe that all comes off as a pretty negative review of it, which it's not intended to be, just that I felt it could have been better. The end of WoB is so great, and they get a lot right with WoR, but I think it could have been better.

As to making getting characters mandatory, I'm sure they wanted you to at least be able to fill out the three 4 man groups for the Kefka tower assault.

Kefka was great. Atma Weapon was still one of my favorite fights back when it was released. They did a good job sucking you into both worlds, but that Ruined world had me snoozing with the color palette. Where's muh super time reversal/world regenerating mega esper? Playing Sabin's moves upped my Street fighter ass kicking, almost over night.
At least it was better than ff9.

Well, I suppose I would just have to explain my position again..or clarify...that is... Kefka was behind everything - he wasn't just like randomly happenstance "oh, if I kill him now- it would be perfect! And I can take over haha" he also was the one wanting to find out more about the espers and how to use/abuse them more then the emperor.

Again, we don't enter the WoR at day one after the thing happens. Every one of our characters between the fight at the goddess statues and when you find them have gone from "we all together can do this, we have been through a hell and back and we will face the darkness and win or die!" To "fuck it, I am staying here and doing whatever" gau, sure- MOG sure, shadow - yeah... but everyone else that is giving zero fucks about Kefka for the mostpart because their will to fights been broken.

Its a very anime thing- they expect all the viewers to assume what's happened by jumping in time and showing the result and where they are now.

Is it perfect? No - is it one of the best FF games made and even one of the best RPGs - absolutely.

Are there obvious technical limitations to the story telling and mechanics - yes

Siliconemelons Siliconemelons hope you weren't getting the impression I didn't like the game. I still rank it #2 among FF games and it is one of the best RPG's of all time. I fully understand it wasn't "day one" when you catch up in WoR, I just an already great game could have been even better, and Kefka could have actually been a better villain, had there been more interaction directly with the players during the WoR. Could still have been a very open phase, but with some main story stuff to direct the party. Just my opinion.

Kefka isn't supposed to be that prominent in World of Balance. You only encounter him a couple of times, he's more like the recurring minor villains like The Turks. That makes his actions even more shocking since he hasn't been built up as an obvious antagonist. The Emperor is who you assume will be the big bad.

Summons are not reflection of those who call them. Any summoner can call them if they pray to the fayth properly. Yuna can summon Anima later in the game, it is possible that other people went to Baaj Temple between Seymour' mother being placed there and it being destroyed by Sin. It's also possible that not many people have seen a summon and don't really know what they look like.

Not sure what you mean about nothing being real. Only Tidus and the tutorial city are not real. Do you mean aspects of Yevom being a lie?

I've not quite finished the remaster (well worth it by the way), so I may be missing a bit.

Yu Yevon is summoning Tidus' Zanarkand via the giant Fayth on Mount Gagazet, which is made out of the surviving population after Bevelle destroyed it. Sin was made by Yevon to protect himself.

It's a dream of how Zanarkand used to be but like the other summons it's a physical thing, so Sin and Auron could travel there since its I assume in the ocean somewhere off Baaj/Besaid.

So its actually real in a way, Sins attack on it was in the present day. Sin never attacked the original Zanarkand.

I kind of thought the whole Sin attack on the summoned Zanarkand was to allow Auron to go get Tidus, and start in motion events to hopefully allow Tidus and company to end his father/Sin once and for all.

I always thought FFX's story was convoluted just to be convoluted. They could have easily streamlined the story and not have a dream Zanarkand and real Zanarkand.

Yeah...there was a real zanaraknd right? It was destroyed... a long time ago? I don't see how timelines add up with jecht was on the last sin pilgrimage and had a son that was...in the ancient zanaraknd that was summoned?

It wasn't THAT convoluted, the twist just took a little thinking. Agreed the big question mark is how Jecht originally got to Spira to go on the pilgrimage before Yuna's...from what I recall, he was practicing blitzball somewhere and came into contact with Sin, which transported him to Spira. As long as you somehow believe that Dream Zanarkand exists somewhere within Spira/near Spira, it can make sense.
